Book excerpt: Kuniyoshi The Faithful Samurai is a pioneering publication which deals with the most famous series - the Seichū gishi den (1847-48) and its sequel the Seichū gishin den (1848) - of the forty-seven masterless samurai (rōnin) by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). The true 18th-century tale of revenge by forty-seven rōnin for the death of their lord was enormously popular in Japan: it was dramatised for the Kabuki theatre and its heroes were often depicted in ukiyo-e prints. Kuniyoshi was a master in the genre of warrior prints, and his series expressively portrays these warrior 'folk heroes'. Dr. Weinberg's book also includes translations of the texts which appear on the prints and which recount each hero's exploits. In addition, there are photographs of the relics of the masterless samurai and the ruins of their castle in Akō.

Book excerpt: Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is regarded as one of the true masters of ukiyo-e, the populist art of Edo-period Japan. Kuniyoshi produced thousands of prints and designs during his lifetime, but is perhaps best-known for his musha-e ("warrior prints"), which propelled him to prominence around 1827-1830. Kuniyoshi's series 108 Heroes Of The Suikoden was revolutionary in its dynamics, colour and visual violence, establishing the delirious, almost proto-psychedelic style with which the artist would recreate archetypal heroes, outlaws and renegades from Japanese history and legend over the ensuing decades.OUTLAW DEATH SWORDS collects the entire 74-picture 108 Heroes series, plus Kuniyoshi's equally vivid and complex 30-picture 800 Heroes Of Our Country's Suikoden (Honchô Suikoden gôyû happyaku-nin no hitori, 1830-1836); taken together, the 104 portrait images of warriors, heroes and anti-heroes in OUTLAW DEATH SWORDS comprise a stunning selection of the art and imagination of an unsurpassed 19th century master as applied to the dazzling, hyper-kinetic and often violent genre in which he remains unsurpassed.

Book excerpt: This handsome volume explores the life and work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), one of Japan's greatest print artists. Alongside such illustrious names as Hokusai and Hiroshige, he dominated the 19th-century production of the popular genre of woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e, literally, "pictures of the floating world." The only major book to illustrate the entirety of the artist's work, Kuniyoshi explores his extraordinary imagination across an impressive range of subject matter, from his portraits of Japanese warrior heroes and fashionable beauties to his satirical themes and innovative landscape prints. Published to accompany a spectacular exhibition, Kuniyoshi is an essential reference for Japanese art collectors and enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful study, which antedates the work of Jung by a generation, represents the first serious attempt to correlate the methods of psychoanalysis with the literature of alchemy and of other great Western mystical and occult traditions. Dr. Silberer was a prominent member of the Vienna School whose untimely death prevented this, his major published work, from receiving the attention it clearly merited. Included is a wealth of material taken directly from alchemical and Rosicrucian sources. Symbolisms of salt, sulphur and mercury; of the prison, the abyss and the grave; of putrefaction and procreation; and of the sun, moon, and planets are carefully analyzed and explained. Passages from the works of Hermes Trismegistus, Flamel, Lacinius, Michael Meier, Paracelsus, and Boehme are cited both as important sources of alchemical doctrine and to substantiate the thesis that alchemy was a spiritual discipline of the highest order, comparable to the Yoga of the East. The entire inquiry is based on a parable from the pages of "Geheime Figuren der Rosenkreuzer," an l8th-century alchemical text. After a general exposition of dream and myth interpretation, Dr. Silberer proceeds to a psychoanalytic interpretation of the parable and then gives a detailed account of the traditions and practices of the alchemists, Rosicrucians, and Freemasons. Returning to the parable, he introduces the problem of dual interpretations; for while the psychoanalytic approach focuses on the depths of the impulsive life, the hermetic and mystical leads to the heights of spirituality. The heart of the book is an attempt to reconcile these divergent philosophies and a meditation on the relationship of introversion to mysticism.

Book excerpt: In this witty novel of ideas, an intellectual and sensual adventure of the rarest kind unfolds amid a picturesque Mediterranean island. Generations of readers have delighted in the tale of an English clergyman's visit to a "rambling and craggy sort of place," where whitewashed houses perch on sheer rock cliffs above a gleaming sea. But underneath its tranquil surface, the island seethes with volcanic activity. And behind the aristocratic discourse on life and love lies a tangle of nefarious activities, from art forgery to murder. A memorable cast of characters includes the genteel visiting bishop as well as an elderly diplomat, a devilish magistrate, a malevolent barkeeper, and a host of other expatriates, freethinkers, eccentrics, zealots, and ne'er-do-wells. Their interactions generate a volatile mixture of notions that prove as unsettling as the sirocco, the hot, damp wind from the south. Combining elegant prose with glittering epigrams, mordant satire, and memorable characterization, this story offers thought-provoking entertainment.
