Book excerpt: The early west-central Indiana town of Crawfordsville saw the passage of several Native American tribes, as well as French traders and missionaries, traveling along Sugar Creek. Flourishing as the county seat, the city was buoyed by the railroad, horses, and higher education, and is most well known for Wabash College, outstanding American authors such as Lew Wallace (Ben Hur), and the Federal Land Office. Overcoming hardships along the way, the residents' fortitude and commitment to the city's growth enabled them to persevere and establish this lucrative and charming community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series collects the quarterly journals of the Essex Society of Genealogists into convenient yearly volumes. Essex County, Massachusetts, is a region of genealogical interest to many people across the country, and the Society's journal has been an important source of information for its subscribers since it was founded in 1981. Each volume contains articles related to Essex County or to genealogical research in general. Recurring highlights of the journals include the "TEG Feature Article," "It Happened in Essex County" (local history), "Crest and Shield" (heraldry information), "Tools of the Trade" (advice on genealogical resources), "The Ahnentafel" (family generational charts), "Research in Progress," "Ask TEG," "Society News," "Genealogical Queries," and original poetry. While there is enough general information and advice included to make this book valuable for anyone interested in genealogy, those with genealogical interest specific to Essex County, Massachusetts, could not hope for a better resource. The Society has created a new, full-name index for each volume. In this volume: Feature Articles: "French-Canadian Genealogical Research," "Preparing Lineages," "Understanding Tombstones," "Genealogies and Genealogical Notes from TEG," "Migrations Out of New England." Research in Progress: "Hugh Alley of Lynn and his Descendants," "William Bassett Family of Lynn, Marblehead and New Jersey," "Isaac Hart and Samuel Hart," "The Hood Family of Lynn," "William Knight of Lynn," "Some Descendants of Jabez Hackett," "Thomas Jones of Gloucester," "Matthew Estes of Lynn and Salem," "Henry Silsbee of Salem and Lynn, and his Descendants through his son Ephraim of Lynn," "John Hale of Boxford, Mass. and Annapolis, Nova Scotia," "Philip and Nathaniel Kirtland of Lynn," "John Divan of Lynn," "The Lynn Descendants of Edward Baker," "Joseph Parker of Andover," "John Witt of Lynn," "The Descendants of Francis Norwood of Gloucester," "Thomas Norwood of Lynn, son of Francis Norwood of Gloucester," "Theophilus Eaton of Salisbury, Mass. and His Descendants who Migrated to Maine," "Joseph Browne of Lynn, son of Thomas and Mary (Newhall) Browne," "The Armitage Brothers of Lynn and Boston," "Joseph Parker of Andover -- conclusion." Book excerpt: Isolated from the main transportation routes during the early 19th century, Lake Charles was a backwater of 500 people when incorporated in 1867. The arrival of the schooners and the railroad integrated it into the corridor between Galveston, Houston, and New Orleans, and Lake Charles grew rapidly after the Civil War. Streams of migrants from Europe, nearby communities in Texas and Louisiana, and northern states moved here and built a booming lumber industry. Though beset by fires, storms, and floods, the city rebuilt many times, and in the 20th century, Lake Charles and its environs became an important petrochemical center. Today, the city sponsors annual festivals that celebrate its heritage. Lake Charles supports many fine public schools, a regional university, and artistic endeavors of which it is justly proud, including a symphony, a community band, and a variety of choruses, theater associations, and dance companies--all of which are pictured within the pages of Images of America: Lake Charles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the English Civil War of 1642 and the American Revolution, countless British missionaries announced their intention to "spread the gospel" among the native North American population. Despite the scope of their endeavors, they converted only a handful of American Indians to Christianity. Their attempts to secure moral and financial support at home proved much more successful. In The Poor Indians, Laura Stevens delves deeply into the language and ideology British missionaries used to gain support, and she examines their wider cultural significance. Invoking pity and compassion for "the poor Indian"—a purely fictional construct—British missionaries used the Black Legend of cruelties perpetrated by Spanish conquistadors to contrast their own projects with those of Catholic missionaries, whose methods were often brutal and deceitful. They also tapped into a remarkably effective means of swaying British Christians by connecting the latter's feelings of religious superiority with moral obligation. Describing mission work through metaphors of commerce, missionaries asked their readers in England to invest, financially and emotionally, in the cultivation of Indian souls. As they saved Indians from afar, supporters renewed their own faith, strengthened the empire against the corrosive effects of paganism, and invested in British Christianity with philanthropic fervor. The Poor Indians thus uncovers the importance of religious feeling and commercial metaphor in strengthening imperial identity and colonial ties, and it shows how missionary writings helped fashion British subjects who were self-consciously transatlantic and imperial because they were religious, sentimental, and actively charitable.

Book excerpt: The 150-Year History of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Watertown,Wisconsin. 1853-2003. The only previous history of St. Henry’s Catholic Church of Watertown was written in German in 1903, at the time of the 50th anniversary of the congregation. One hundred years later, a new and comprehensive history of the congregation has been written to coincide with the 150th anniversary of St. Henry’s. The product of over two years of research, this updated history documents and adds perspective to the significant achievement of the one and one-half centuries of the church itself and also of the faith and devotion of its members over the years. Making lighthearted use of names of books of the Bible to organize the content of this history, the author covers all aspects of the history of St. Henry’s: the church, school, parish center, rectory, and cemetery; the societies and organizations; the varied religious services; the few absolute commands of Christ and the many rules of the Church; the devotions that nurtured one’s religious life and also the events that tested one’s faith. Particular emphasis is placed on the early decades of the 150 year history.
