Beide waren Vordenker ihres Zeitalters, Ockham des Mittelalters und Descartes der Neuzeit, die mit ihren Werken den Fortlauf der Wissenschaft nachhaltig beeinflusst haben. Um aus den folgenden, wenigen Seiten eine fruchtbare Arbeit zu fertigen, wird sich meine Untersuchung strikt auf einen bestimmten Ausschnitt der Wissenschaftstheorien der beiden Philosophen beschränken. Das heisst, ich werde versuchen zu ergründen, was die Konzepte von beiden Autoren zu drei notwendigen Bestandteilen einer jeden Theorie der Wissenschaft sind: das Subjekt der Wissenschaft, das Objekt der Wissenschaft und die Art und Weise wie neues Wissen prinzipiell erlangt wird.2 Die ersten beiden Teile sind also eine Auseinandersetzung mit den zwei grundsätzlichen Entitäten der Wissenschaft und der letzte Teil ist eine Beschäftigung mit einem Ausschnitt aus der Theorie zu den Methoden von Ockham und Descartes. Durch dieseAuseinandersetzung soll es möglich sein, die wichtigsten Thesen der beiden Philosophen zu diesem Thema zu verstehen, ihre Gemeinsamkeiten zu erkennen und ihre Unterschiede deutlich zu sehen. Was diese Arbeit aber nicht bietet, ist eine systematische Einführung zu den Theorien von Descartes und Ockham. Ihre Theorien werde ich lediglich fortlaufend erklären und analysieren, um sie zueinander in Kontrast setzen zu können. Die Arbeit wird sich in erster Linie aber immer um den Begriff der Wissenschaft bei den beiden Philosophen drehen und nicht um ihr Schaffen im Generellen.

The present study on Peter Aureol’s († 1322) doctrine of transcendentals offers a contribution to that discussion by delimiting from both directions: by developing Aureol’s position in contrast to the contemporary position of a scotist-orientated, formalistic realism, it sheds light on the innovative traits in his doctrine. On the other hand, Aureol’s logico-semantical revision of metaphysics is presented as an intentional affirmation of tradition, so that a revised view can be taken of Aureol’s role within the development of a modern metaphysics of the object as such.
