Book Synopsis Biology of Sharks and Their Relatives, Second Edition by : Jeffrey C. Carrier
Download or read book Biology of Sharks and Their Relatives, Second Edition written by Jeffrey C. Carrier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually every area of research associated with sharks and their relatives has been strongly impacted by the revolutionary growth in technology. The questions we can now ask are very different than those reported even two decades ago. Modern immunological and genetic techniques, satellite telemetry and archival tagging, modern phylogenetic analysis, GIS, and bomb dating, are just a few of the techniques and procedures that have become a part of our investigative lexicon. A modern synthesis of the biology of Chondrichthyans, Biology of Sharks and Their Relatives, Second Edition discusses significant advances in the development and application of new molecular techniques to the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among and between these groups. The book considers the effect of global changes on the status of sharks and their relatives, and how advances in technology and analytical techniques have changed not only how we approach problem solving and scientific investigations, but how we formulate questions. The book also introduces applications of new and novel laboratory devices, techniques, and field instruments. This second edition of the award winning and groundbreaking original exploration of the fundamental elements of the taxonomy, systematics, physiology, and ecology of sharks, skates, rays, and chimera, presents cohesive and integrated coverage of key topics and discusses technological advances used in modern shark research. Offering a well-rounded picture for students and researchers, and far above competitors in scope and research, this new volume holds a wealth of data on the current status of Chondrichthyan research and provides the basis and springboard for original research. Book Synopsis Evolution in Action by : Matthias Glaubrecht
Download or read book Evolution in Action written by Matthias Glaubrecht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-24 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiations, or Evolution in Action We have just celebrated the “Darwin Year” with the double anniversary of his 200th birthday and 150th year of his masterpiece, “On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection”. In this work, Darwin established the factual evidence of biological evolution, that species change over time, and that new organisms arise by the splitting of ancestral forms into two or more descendant species. However, above all, Darwin provided the mechanisms by arguing convincingly that it is by natural selection – as well as by sexual selection (as he later added) – that organisms adapt to their environment. The many discoveries since then have essentially con?rmed and strengthened Darwin’s central theses, with latest evidence, for example, from molecular genetics, revealing the evolutionary relationships of all life forms through one shared history of descent from a common ancestor. We have also come a long way to progressively understand more on how new species actually originate, i. e. on speciation which remained Darwin’s “mystery of m- teries”, as noted in one of his earliest transmutation notebooks. Since speciation is the underlying mechanism for radiations, it is the ultimate causation for the biological diversity of life that surrounds us.

Book Synopsis Mesozoic Fishes 3 by : Andrea Tintori
Download or read book Mesozoic Fishes 3 written by Andrea Tintori and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mesozoic was an important time in the evolution of chondrichthyan and actinopterygian fishes because it was then that most of the modern groups first entered the fossil record and began to radiate. By the end of the era, many archaic forms had disappeared and the foundation had been laid for the ichthyofauna that now exists. Despite this significant evolutionary change, before 1990 there had been little concerted research done on Mesozoic fishes and no synopsis or compilation of the systematics and paleoecology of Mesozoic fishes had been published, not even for single groups. To remedy this deficiency, Gloria ARRATIA initiated the symposium "Mesozoic Fishes". The first meeting "Mesozoic Fishes ? Systematics and Paleoecology" was held in Eichstatt from August 9 to 12, 1993 and the first volume of Mesozoic Fishes, including 36 papers concerning elasmobranchs, actinopteygians and sarcopterygians and the paleoecology of certain important fossil localities was published in 1996. Gloria ARRATIA and Hans-Peter SCHULTZE organized the second Symposium. It was held in Buckow, from July 6 to 10, 1997. The results of the symposium were published in "Mesozoic Fishes 2 ? Systematics and Fossil Record" and included 31 papers.Andrea TINTORI, Markus FELBER and Heinz FURRER organized the third Symposium. It was held in Serpiano, Monte San Giorgio from August 26 to 31, 2001.The results of the symposium presented in this volume reflect the current state of knowledge of Mesozoic fishes. Evaluation of major fish groups such as Mesozoic chondrichthyans, halecostomes and sarcopterygians and of the Mesozoic fossil record of continents such as North America, Asia, South America and Africa are the central issue. In addition, new information on chondrichthyans, actinopterygians and sarcopterygians are presented. The new findings and the evaluations of the present state of knowledge of Mesozoic fishes described in 33 papers are an exciting invitation to further research.

Book Synopsis Will Africa Feed China? by : Deborah Brautigam
Download or read book Will Africa Feed China? written by Deborah Brautigam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is China building a new empire in rural Africa? Over the past decade, China's meteoric rise on the continent has raised a drumbeat of alarm. China has 9 percent of the world's arable land, 6 percent of its water, and over 20 percent of its people. Africa's savannahs and river basins host the planet's largest expanses of underutilized land and water. Few topics are as controversial and emotionally charged as the belief that the Chinese government is aggressively buying up huge tracts of prime African land to grow food to ship back to China. In Will Africa Feed China?, Deborah Brautigam, one of the world's leading experts on China and Africa, probes the myths and realities behind the media headlines. Her careful research challenges the conventional wisdom; as she shows, Chinese farming investments are in fact surprisingly limited, and land acquisitions modest. Defying expectations, China actually exports more food to Africa than it imports. Is this picture likely to change? African governments are pushing hard for foreign capital, and China is building a portfolio of tools to allow its agribusiness firms to "go global." International concerns about "land grabbing" are well-justified. Yet to feed its own growing population, rural Africa must move from subsistence to commercial agriculture. What role will China play? Moving from the halls of power in Beijing to remote irrigated rice paddies of Africa, Will Africa Feed China? introduces the people and the politics that will shape the future of this engagement: the state-owned Chinese agribusiness firms that pioneered African farming in the 1960s and the entrepreneurial private investors who followed them. Their fascinating stories, and those of the African farmers and officials who are their counterparts, ground Brautigam's deeply informative, deftly balanced reporting. Forcefully argued and empirically rich, Will Africa Feed China? will be a landmark work, shedding new light on China's evolving global quest for food security and Africa's possibilities for structural transformation.

Download or read book Annotated type catalogue of the Orthalicoidea (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in the Museum f?r Naturkunde, Berlin written by Abraham S.H. Breure and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-08-09 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical type collections are an important tool in biodiversity research and help to understand taxa if their data are presented with their label information, thus providing a context for taxonomic research. This paper is part in a series undertaken under the SYNTHESYS programme to document the types of Orthalicoidea (Mollusca, Gastropoda) taxa in major European museums, in this case the Museum f?r Naturkunde Berlin. Information on type material of 96 taxa is presented; together with references to previous documentation, all 238 types of Orthalicoidea types extant in the Berlin museum are indexed. Also a list of relevant correspondence in the Handwriting Archive is presented.
