Download or read book Out for the Count written by M. M. E. M. Rutten and published by Fountain Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 29 December 1997 Kenyans went to the polls to choose their president and parliamentary and civic representatives. Some earmarked the 1997 elections as perhaps the most important ones in the history of the country. This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the election from a local perspective. Specialists on Kenyan politics discuss both the national and local levels of politics in the country. Did the Likoni clashes favour the success of the local Shirikisho party at the coast? What went wrong for Charity Ngilu, Kenya's first presidental candidate, in her Ukambani backyard? How did the opposition win seats in the traditionally pro-KANU zones of the Rift Valley province? And how did the ruling party win in the Westlands constituency in Nairobi? The book also deals with the technical aspects of the 1997 elections such as registration, campaigning and vote counting. The expericences of a new model of election observation are also highlighted.

Book Synopsis Germany's Africa Policy Revisited by : Ulf Engel
Download or read book Germany's Africa Policy Revisited written by Ulf Engel and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2002 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Germany has been a major international player in Africa ever since West Germany's readmission to international politics after 1955, surprisingly little has been written about this topic, and even less reliable knowledge has been established. This study poses the need for a review of Germany's relations with the African continent over the past decades. It challenges scholars to fill the factual gaps that characterize the state of research so far. Ulf Engel is associate professor of politics in Africa at the Institute of African Studies, University of Leipzig. Robert Kappel is professor of politics and economics at the Institute of African Studies, University of Leipzig.
Book Synopsis Land and Disaster Management Strategies in Asia by : Huong Ha
Download or read book Land and Disaster Management Strategies in Asia written by Huong Ha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on land and disaster governance in Asian countries. The Asian region has become increasingly vulnerable to natural disasters, including floods, cyclones, storms, earthquakes, drought, typhoons and tsunamis. Further, as a result of unsustainable changes being made in patterns of land use, catchment and coastal zones, increasing population density, migration patterns, and the spread of consumer culture across countries, the impact of natural disasters has increased manifold. The book addresses two major concerns in this field. Firstly, it discusses topics intended to raise awareness among all stakeholders of the critical aspects of disaster management in the context of Asia. Secondly, it calls upon policymakers, researchers, academics, practitioners, private enterprises and civil society organizations, as well as all those who have been, are and will be affected by natural disasters to search for innovative and novel approaches to reducing risk and managing disasters.
Book Synopsis Health in Megacities and Urban Areas by : Alexander Krämer
Download or read book Health in Megacities and Urban Areas written by Alexander Krämer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse driving forces, processes and actors are responsible for different trends in the development of megacities and large urban areas. Under the dynamics of global change, megacities are themselves changing: On the one hand they are prone to increasing socio-economic vulnerability due to pronounced poverty, socio-spatial and political fragmentation, sometimes with extreme forms of segregation, disparities and conflicts. On the other hand megacities offer positive potential for global transformation, e.g. minimisation of space consumption, highly effective use of resources, efficient disaster prevention and health care options – if good strategies were developed. At present in many megacities and urban areas of the developing world and the emerging economies the quality of life is eroding. Most of the megacities have grown to unprecedented size, and the pace of urbanisation has far exceeded the growth of the necessary infrastructure and services. As a result, an increasing number of urban dwellers are left without access to basic amenities like clean drinking water, fresh air and safe food. Additionally, social inequalities lead to subsequent and significant intra-urban health inequalities and unbalanced disease burdens that can trigger conflict and violence between subpopulations. The guiding idea of our book lies in a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to the complex topic of megacities and urban health that can only be adequately understood when different disciplines share their knowledge and methodological tools to work together. We hope that the book will allow readers to deepen their understanding of the complex dynamics of urban and megacity populations through the lens of public health, geographical and other research perspectives.
