Book excerpt: Zen to Reveal the Extraordinary Tao offers an accessible and hands-on guide to how we can use the insights of Zen Buddhism and Taoism to inform and enrich our daily lives. In a search to know something more than our 'I-self', psychologist Trevor Rufli describes how the 'knowing' that came to him in his own journey 'turned everything on its head' and set everything in the opposite direction to where he had been looking: The really wonderful thing about this knowing is that it is not something we need to come to know through acquiring knowledge, becoming religious, doing spiritual stuff, making an effort or doing anything in particular. You don't have to believe anything either. Rather this knowing is acquired through a process of understanding that is a process of letting go rather than accruing. Trevor draws on the knowledge and experience of the giants of Zen Buddhism and Taoism to clarify paradoxical matters such as: non-doing versus doing nothing, self and non-self, desire and fulfilment, and the potential pitfalls of specific spiritual practices. Whether you are an experienced spiritual seeker, or engaged in self-exploration for the first time, Zen to Reveal the Extraordinary Tao is a unique experiential guide.

Book excerpt: Alan Watts — noted author and respected authority on Far Eastern thought — studied Taoism extensively, and in his final years moved to a quiet cabin in the mountains and dedicated himself almost exclusively to meditating and writing on the Tao. This new book gives us an opportunity to not only understand the concept of the Tao but to experience the Tao as a personal practice of liberation from the limitations imposed by the common beliefs within our culture. The philosophy of the Tao offers a way to understand the value of ourselves as free-willed individuals enfolded within the ever-changing patterns of nature. The path of the Tao is perhaps the most puzzling way of liberation to come to us from the Far East in the last century. It is both practical and esoteric, and it has a surprisingly comfortable quality of thought that is often overlooked by Western readers who never venture beyond the unfamiliar quality of the word Tao (pronounced "dow"). But those who do soon discover a way of understanding and living with the world that has profound implications for us today in so-called modern societies. The word Tao means the Way — in the sense of a path, a way to go — but it also means nature, in the sense of one's true nature, and the nature of the universe. Often described as the philosophy of nature, we find the origins of Taoism in the shamanic world of pre-Dynastic China. Living close to the earth, one sees the wisdom of not interfering, and letting things go their way. It is the wisdom of swimming with the current, splitting wood along the grain, and seeking to understand human nature instead of changing it. Every creature finds it's way according to the laws of nature, and each of us has our own inner path — or Tao.

Book excerpt: A beautifully compelling and liberating guide to the original nature of Zen in ancient China by renowned author and translator David Hinton. Buddhism migrated from India to China in the first century C.E., and Ch'an (Japanese: Zen) is generally seen as China's most distinctive and enduring form of Buddhism. In China Root, however, David Hinton shows how Ch'an was in fact a Buddhist-influenced extension of Taoism, China's native system of spiritual philosophy. Unlike Indian Buddhism's abstract sensibility, Ch'an was grounded in an earthy and empirically-based vision. Exploring this vision, Hinton describes Ch'an as a kind of anti-Buddhism. A radical and wild practice aspiring to a deeply ecological liberation: the integration of individual consciousness with landscape and with a Cosmos seen as harmonious and alive. In China Root, Hinton describes this original form of Zen with his trademark clarity and elegance, each chapter exploring in enlightening ways a core Ch'an concept--such as meditation, mind, Buddha, awakening--as it was originally understood and practiced in ancient China. Finally, by examining a range of standard translations in the Appendix, Hinton reveals how this original understanding and practice of Ch'an/Zen is almost entirely missing in contemporary American Zen, because it was lost in Ch'an's migration from China through Japan and on to the West. Whether you practice Zen or not, taking this journey on the wings of Hinton's remarkable insight and powerful writing will transform how you understand yourself and the world.

Book excerpt: Library Journal called it, "The best history of Zen ever written." The truth of Zen has always resided in individual experience rather than in theoretical writings. To give the modern reader access to understanding of this truth, THE ZEN EXPERIENCE illumines Zen as it was created and shaped by the personalities, perceptions, and actions of its masters over the centuries. Beginning with the twin roots of Zen in Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism, we follow it through its initial flowering in China under the First Patriarch Bodhidharma; its division into schools of "gradual" and "sudden" enlightenment under Shen-hsui and Shen-hui; the ushering in of its golden age by Hui-neng; the development of "shock" enlightenment by Ma-tsu; its poetic greatness in the person of Han-shan; the perfection of the use of the koan by Ta-hui; the migration of Zen to Japan and its extraordinary growth there under a succession of towering Japanese spiritual leaders. Rich in historical background, vivid in revealing anecdote and memorable quotation, this long-needed work succeeds admirably in taking Zen from the library shelves and restoring its living, human form.

Book excerpt: "Zen and Tao, A Little Book on Buddhist Though and Meditation" is really not a little book. It is a collection of Buddhist quotes, thoughts, and meditations from the school of Zen and the Tao. The Translations of the Hsin Hsin Ming, The Tao Te Ching, and Nargarjuna's Tree of Wisdom by Dennis Waller are included along with a collection of 50 selected quotes from Chuang Tzu, Okakura Kakuzo, and Buddha. Also included are selected commentaries on Zen and the Tao from the works of Dennis Waller. An Excerpt from the book- Throughout Buddhism, Taoism and Zen there it much talk and mention about Nothingness, Emptiness, Oneness, the Void, and Suchness. In the western world, this makes no sense, "There has to be something, even nothing is something, right?" The western world cannot understand these meanings, maybe because there are no meaning to these words in the East. This is a major conflict between the two worlds. The west always believes that there is meaning in everything, there is always a "why" and a meaning to that "why." In Zen, in the true meaning of life, there is no meaning. In Zen, it is call existence. In existence, there is no need for a meaning or explanation, it just is what it is. There is a story about Picasso the painter. One day an observer watched Picasso start a painting. As the day wore on Picasso continued to paint till he finished with the work in the afternoon. Upon completion, the observer asked Picasso what the painting represented, what was the meaning of it. Picasso became upset, angry, even mad. He shouted, "Go ask the roses in the garden what is the meaning of the roses! Why do people come to me and ask for the meaning? If the rose can be there without any meaning, then why cannot my painting be there without any meaning?" Meanings are a thing of the mind. It is the mind that seeks a meaning to everything. Sometimes this is a good thing, like in science and medicine. But for nature, there is no meaning, there is just is. This is the precept of existence in nature, for there is no need for meaning. Look at it this way, how absurd would it be to ask a cloud, "What is the meaning of this? Why are you here and where did you come from?" I am sure the cloud will have no answer for you. Because the cloud is being a cloud, doing what clouds do. That is the dharma of a cloud and it is fulfilling that dharma. It would be the same thing if you asked a dog why it barks. What do you think the answer would be? The dog cannot answer the question, because it doesn't understand why you're asking such a question. Dogs bark and cats meow, because that is their nature. If a sentient being is living its dharma, there is no need for meaning, its existence is enough. All throughout nature, there isn't any meaning placed on anything by nature. It is us that has a ego driven need for meaning and to place meaning on things. If we do not have meaning we began to feel insecure and worried. We feel out of place or disconnected. This behavior isn't seen in nature, only in man. In creating meaning, we create separation. As long we are in separation, there can be no enlightenment. Enlightenment is losing separation and meaning. When you focus on the meaning of something, you have missed the point. Because the something really isn't what it appears to be."
