Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new title from Routledge Major Works, this is a four-volume collection of cutting-edge and canonical research. Both from the point of view of the experiences of different groups of students, and also with respect to the form that education about sexuality, sex, and relationships should take, education and sexuality raises complex questions and provokes heated-sometimes furious-debate. This four-volume collectionoffers an authoritative overview of key issues within this rapidly developing field. Under the editorship of Peter Aggleton (editor-in-chief of the international journal, Sex Education), the collection covers a wide range of contemporary issues and concerns, including: the sexualities curriculum; `politics and pleasure'; classroom processes and dynamics; sexual and gender diversity in the classroom; gender and sexual violence in schools and colleges; and bullying, victimization and abuse. Special attention is also given to enduring topics, such as the content and context of sexualtiy education; the age at which it should take place; faith and religion; politics and political controversies; and the science and ethics of sexualities education. With a comprehensive introduction written by Peter Aggleton, alongside section introductions prepared by well known scholars within the field, Education and Sexualities is a key addition to Routledge's Major Themes in Education series. It is destined to be valued by educationalists and scholars working in related areas as a vital one-stop research tool

Book excerpt: This book seeks to re-envision the purpose and pedagogy of sexuality education, disrupting its conventional instrumental and health related aims. Predominately theoretical in nature, it presses at the traditional limits of sexuality education's thought by drawing together ideas from disparate disciplinary fields including education, geography, sound studies and new materialist theory. The philosophical thought of Sharon Todd provides an anchor throughout, and is employed to reconceptualize sexuality education as sensuous event. The author calls for a reframing of the relationship of education and ethics, and explores what this means for sexuality education classrooms and relationships between and amongst teachers and students. The book explores pedagogies that invite new forms of student sensibility and open possibilities for engagement in sexuality education in currently uncharted ways. It will appeal to students and experienced academics conducting research related to sexuality, education, educational philosophy, queer studies and new materialisms. Louisa Allen is a Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She specialises in research in the areas of sexualities, young people and schooling and innovative research methodologies which seek to engage hard to reach research populations. She examines these areas through the lenses of queer, feminist post-structural and feminist new materialist theoretical frameworks and has written extensively in these fields.

Book excerpt: With his epic trilogy, The Sleepwalkers, Hermann Broch established himself as one of the great innovators of modern literature, a visionary writer-philosopher the equal of James Joyce, Thomas Mann, or Robert Musil. Even as he grounded his narratives in the intimate daily life of Germany, Broch was identifying the oceanic changes that would shortly sweep that life into the abyss. Whether he is writing about a neurotic army officer (The Romantic), a disgruntled bookkeeper and would-be assassin (The Anarchist), or an opportunistic war-deserter (The Relaist), Broch immerses himself in the twists of his characters' psyches, and at the same time soars above them, to produce a prophetic portrait of a world tormented by its loss of faith, morals, and reason.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic consideration of the link between the extreme right and the discourse about developments in regard to gender issues within different national states. The contributors analyze right-wing extremist tendencies in Europe under the specific perspective on gender. The volume brings together the few existing findings concerning the quantitative dimension of activities carried out by men and women in different countries, and illuminates and juxtaposes gender ratios along with the role of women in right-wing extremism. Along with the gender-specific access to right-wing groups, the chapters look at networks, organizational forms, specific strategies of female right-wing extremists, their ideologies (especially regarding femininity and masculinity), hetero normativity, discourses on sexuality, and preventive and counter-strategies. The book will be of use to students and scholars interested in gender and politics, European politics, and political extremism.

Many young people face daily tormenting and bullying, and this is especially true for LGBTQ kids and teens. In response to a number of tragic suicides by LGBTQ students, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage uploaded a video to YouTube with his partner, Terry Miller. Speaking openly about the bullying they suffered, and how they both went on to lead rewarding adult lives, their video launched the It Gets Better Project YouTube channel and initiated a worldwide phenomenon. It Gets Better is a collection of original essays and expanded testimonials written to teens from celebrities, political leaders, and everyday people, because while many LGBTQ teens can't see a positive future for themselves, we can.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues explored in The Feminist Classroom are as timely and controversial today as they were when the book first appeared six years ago. This expanded edition offers new material that rereads and updates previous chapters, including a major new chapter on the role of race. The authors offer specific new classroom examples of how assumptions of privilege, specifically the workings of unacknowledged whiteness, shape classroom discourses. This edition also goes beyond the classroom, to examine the present context of American higher education. Drawing on in-depth interviews and using the actual words of students and teachers, the authors take the reader into classrooms at six colleges and universities - Lewis and Clark College, Wheaton College, the University of Arizona, Towson State University, Spelman College, and San Francisco State University. The result is an intimate view of the pedagogical approaches of seventeen feminist college professors. Feminist scholars have demonstrated that American higher education has long represented a white, male, privileged minority. The professors here bring together the twin upheavals that have challenged this tradition: namely a rapidly changing student body and the more inclusive knowledge of feminist and multicultural scholarship. They uncover the voices, concerns and experiences of groups hitherto marginalized in higher education: women, people of color and working class students. Through concrete examples of classroom practice, the work of these professors challenge the traditional split between knowledge and pedagogy that has long characterized higher education.
