Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NIYAZI MISRI A Perfect Master Sufi Poet of Turkey SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Niyazi Misri (d. 1694) was a poet of considerable talent and stands a long way ahead of the throng of Mevlevi and Khalveti sheykhs who had recently been the interpreters of mystic philosophy in Turkish verse. Sufism is the key-note of this poet's work; whatever else is to be found in his Divan is of secondary importance. He was born at the little town of Aspuzi, near Malati. After receiving his first lessons in mystic lore from his father who was a Naqshbendi dervish, he studied in Mardin and Cairo and at the village of Elmali in Anatolia. It is obvious from many of his poems that at some time in his life he became a Perfect Master (Qutub) a God-realized soul. Although Niyazi wrote a good deal of prose his poetical work is confined to his Divan, which is restricted to gazels and qasidas... some of which are in Arabic while in others the lines are alternately in Arabic and Turkish. Introduction on his Life, Poetry & Times, Turkish Language & Poetry, Form of the Gazel & the Qasida, God-Realization & The Perfect Masters, Sufism in Poetry, Selected Bibliography. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept and the meaning of these beautiful, powerful, spiritual poems. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (8 x 10) Paperback Edition. Pages 199 Paul Smith (b.1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Nesimi, Baba Farid, Lalla Ded, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Bulleh Shah, Mahsati Seemab, Jigar, Hali and many others, as well as poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and a dozen screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa

Yunus Emre (d. 132o) is considered one of the most important Turkish poets having a great influence on Turkish literature from his own time until today. Little is known of his life other than he became a Sufi dervish Perfect Master (Qutub). A contemporary of Rumi, it is told the two great souls met. Nesimi (1369-1417) is one of the greatest mystical poets of the late 14th and early 15th centuries and one of the most prominent early masters in Turkish/Azerbaijani literary history. For Nesimi at the centre of Creation there was God, who bestowed His Light on man. Through sacrifice and self-perfection, man can become one with Him. As a direct result of his beliefs he was skinned alive. His tomb in Aleppo remains an important place of pilgrimage to this day. His work consists of two collections of poems, the most important in Turkish that consists of gazels and roba'is and some mesnevis.. Book excerpt: THE EIGHT GREATEST SUFI MASTER-POETS OF THE GHAZALSana'i, 'Attar, Khaqani, Mu'in, Rumi, Sadi, Hafiz, JamiSELECTED POEMSTranslation and Introduction by Paul SmithThe ghazal is the oldest and most difficult and most beautiful and spiritual form of poetry that has ever existed. It is a conversation between the lover and beloved and as in all intimate conversation, the talk flows both ways. Sana'i (d.1131) composed many that influenced all the ghazal poets that followed him. 'Attar (1119 - 1221) is seen with Sana'i and Rumi as one of the three most important Sufi Poet-Masters of the 13th century. He composed many poems in the ghazal form. Khaqani (1122-1199) was the second great Sufi Master of the powerful, spiritual ghazal. Mu'in (1141-1230) was known as Gharib Nawaz or 'Benefactor of the Poor'... he is the most famous Sufi Perfect Master of the Chishti Order. He composed a Divan and 121 wonderful ghazals survive. Rumi (1207-1273) has a Divan which he named after his Master, Shams-e Tabriz includes thousands of spiritual ghazals. Sadi (1210-1291) was another Perfect Master Poet who expressed himself in the ruba'i form as well as hundreds of ghazals in his beautiful Divan. Hafiz (1320-1392) is the undisputed Master of this most ancient poetic form. Jami (1414-1492) is the last great poet of the Persian Classical Period (9th-15th c.) He says:'The largest part of my Divan is ghazals... like songs mad lovers sing. Book excerpt: Although by its title, this book seems to be about a specialized topic, the spread of Mithraic societies and its avatars, in time and geographical expanse, much enhances its relevancy. From Roman legionaries to chivalry orders, from dervish circles to guild organizations, and from Freemasons to French revolutionaries, the hierarchy of Mithraic societies, their initiation rites, and their oaths of secrecy, provided a model for brotherhood organization that was efficient, but also flexible; they could adapt their philosophy to the prevailing politico-religion conditions of the day, because they did not worship any particular god, but could also be comrades in arms with nascent religious movements, such as with Christianity. Mithra was the initial guarantor of their oath, and if need be it could be replaced by Jesus, Allah or any other divinity. Their ÒreligionÓ was their brotherhood, and as such they usually provided a counter-balance to the power elite, and had the potential to become politically active.

In this three-volume study, illustrated with charts and maps, Hodgson traces and interprets the historical development of Islamic civilization from before the birth of Muhammad to the middle of the twentieth century. This work grew out of the famous course on Islamic civilization that Hodgson created and taught for many years at the University of Chicago. "This is a nonpareil work, not only because of its command of its subject but also because it demonstrates how, ideally, history should be written."—The New Yorker Volume 1, The Classical Age of Islam, analyzes the world before Islam, Muhammad's challenge, and the early Muslim state between 625 and 692. Hodgson then discusses the classical civilization of the High Caliphate. The volume also contains a general introduction to the complete work and a foreword by Reuben Smith, who, as Hodgson's colleague and friend, finished the Venture of Islam after the author's death and saw it through to publication.

The remaining sections are then devoted to the reinterpretation of Median, Achaemenid, and Sasanian history, as well as Avestan dilemmas, in light of information derived from these objects and other newly discovered sources. They succinctly bring to light the paradoxical image of "Burning-Water" as a pervasive dualist concept on which all subsequent royal ideologies were built. They also show the substantial impact of Iranian religious conflicts on Abrahamic religions. Finally, the flaws of UNESCO's convention on cultural properties are addressed in the appendix."--Pages 1-2.

Book excerpt: Zoroastrianism might be a fast-declining religion in today’s world, but what is remarkable is its eternal enigma. It is hard to believe that the hymns of the faith have travelled down to us in accurate form and poetic metre, purely through the memory of generations of priests. Zarathustra, the founder of the faith, belonged to a period of Persian history which antedated the Achaemenid dynasty (from 550 BC to 330 BC). He followed the old Rigvedic religion until he was the first to receive a revelation from Almighty God. The Gathas—the most sacred text of the Zoroastrian faith—were first composed and sung by Prophet Zarathustra. Along with the complete comprehension of the Gathas, consisting 238 verses in the same language as the Rigveda, this book is for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the purpose of life on earth and what happens to mankind after death. The Gathas are extremely relevant in modern times for the fundamental reason that they are timeless. They do not emanate from Prophet Zarathustra’s mind, but are revelations from Almighty God, making them universal in their approach. This book is an attempt to help the reader fully comprehend these and choose the path of leading a righteous life.

Book excerpt: With the increasing Muslim diaspora in post-modern Western societies, Sufism – intellectually as well as sociologically – may eventually become Islam itself due to its versatile potential. Although Sufism has always provoked considerable interest in the West, no volume has so far been written which discusses this aspect of Islam in terms of how it is practised in Western societies. Bringing together leading international authorities to survey the history of Islamic mysticism in North America and Europe, this book elaborates the ideas and institutions which organize Sufism and folk-religious practices. The chapters cover: the orders and movements their social base organization and institutionalization recruitment-patterns in new environments channels of disseminating ideas, such as ritual, charisma, and organization reasons for their popularity among certain social groups the nature of their affiliation with the countries of their origin. Providing a fascinating insight into how Sufism operates within different spheres of society, Sufism in the West is essential reading for students and academics with research interests in Islam, Islamic history and social anthropology.
