Book Synopsis Irish Global Migration and Memory by : Marguerite Corporaal
Download or read book Irish Global Migration and Memory written by Marguerite Corporaal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Global Migration and Memory: Transnational Perspectives of Ireland’s Famine Exodus brings together leading scholars in the field who examine the experiences and recollections of Irish emigrants who fled from their famine-stricken homeland in the mid-nineteenth century. The book breaks new ground in its comparative, transnational approach and singular focus on the dynamics of cultural remembrance of one migrant group, the Famine Irish and their descendants, in multiple Atlantic and Pacific settings. Its authors comparatively examine the collective experiences of the Famine Irish in terms of their community and institution building; cultural, ethnic, and racial encounters with members of other groups; and especially their patterns of mass-migration, integration, and remembrance of their traumatic upheaval by their descendants and host societies. The disruptive impact of their mass-arrival had reverberations around the Atlantic world. As an early refugee movement, migrant community, and ethnic minority, Irish Famine emigrants experienced and were recollected to have faced many of the challenges that confronted later immigrant groups in their destinations of settlement. This book is especially topical and will be of interest not only to Irish, migration, and refugee scholars, but also the general public and all who seek to gain insight into one of Europe’s foundational moments of forced migration that prefigures its current refugee crisis. This book was originally published as a special issue of Atlantic Studies: Global Currents.

Or at least he thought he was until he was thrust into an astonishing world of adventure and danger in which he is the promised hero of a great prophecy. Derek sets out with his companions to recover the Princess Arria. Joining the group on their quest are several new comrades, known as the Watcher Fairies. They are the last of their kind still living in Quale. Derek's journey brings him face-to-face with wonders he would never have believed possible back when he was a normal boy sitting in school. As he travels, he also learns about the many races that inhabit Quale and finds a revelation that blows his mind.

Book Synopsis If We Can Keep It: How the Republic Collapsed and How it Might Be Saved by : Michael Tomasky

This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A game-changing account of the deep roots of political polarization in America, including an audacious fourteen-point agenda for how to fix it. Why has American politics fallen into such a state of horrible dysfunction? Can it ever be fixed? These are the questions that motivate Michael Tomasky’s deeply original examination into the origins of our hopelessly polarized nation. “One of America’s finest political commentators” (Michael J. Sandel), Tomasky ranges across centuries and disciplines to show how America has almost always had two dominant parties that are existentially, and often violently, opposed. When he turns to our current era, he does so with striking insight that will challenge readers to reexamine what they thought they knew. Finally, not content merely to diagnose these problems, Tomasky offers a provocative agenda for how we can help fix our broken political system—from ranked-choice voting and at-large congressional elections to expanding high school civics education nationwide. Combining revelatory data with trenchant analysis, Tomasky tells us how the nation broke apart and points us toward a more hopeful political future.

Book Synopsis The Irish Voice in America by : Charles Fanning
Download or read book The Irish Voice in America written by Charles Fanning and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Charles Fanning has written the first general account of the origins and development of a literary tradition among American writers of Irish birth or background who have explored the Irish immigrant or ethnic experience in works of fiction. The result is a portrait of the evolving fictional self-consciousness of an immigrant group over a span of 250 years. Fanning traces the roots of Irish-American writing back to the eighteenth century and carries it forward through the traumatic years of the Famine to the present time with an intensely productive period in the twentieth century beginning with James T. Farrell. Later writers treated in depth include Edwin O'Connor, Elizabeth Cullinan, Maureen Howard, and William Kennedy. Along the way he places in the historical record many all but forgotten writers, including the prolific Mary Ann Sadlier. The Irish Voice in America is not only a highly readable contribution to American literary history but also a valuable reference to many writers and their works. For this second edition, Fanning has added a chapter that covers the fiction of the past decade. He argues that contemporary writers continue to draw on Ireland as a source and are important chroniclers of the modern American experience.
