Book Synopsis Brokers of Modernity by : Martin Kohlrausch
Download or read book Brokers of Modernity written by Martin Kohlrausch and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of modernist architects in East Central Europe The first half of the twentieth century witnessed the rise of modernist architects. Brokers of Modernity reveals how East Central Europe turned into one of the pre-eminent testing grounds of the new belief system of modernism. By combining the internationalism of the CIAM organization and the modernising aspirations of the new states built after 1918, the reach of modernist architects extended far beyond their established fields. Yet, these architects paid a price when Europe’s age of extremes intensified. Mainly drawing on Polish, but also wider Central and Eastern European cases, this book delivers a pioneering study of the dynamics of modernist architects as a group, including how they became qualified, how they organized, communicated and attempted to live the modernist lifestyle themselves. In doing so, Brokers of Modernity raises questions concerning collective work in general and also invites us to examine the social role of architects today. Ebook available in Open Access. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).
Book Synopsis Law, Religion, Constitution by : W. Cole Durham
Download or read book Law, Religion, Constitution written by W. Cole Durham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the place assigned to religion in the constitutions of contemporary States? What role is religion expected to perform in the fields that are the object of constitutional regulation? Is separation of religion and politics a necessary precondition for democracy and the rule of law? These questions are addressed in this book through an analysis of the constitutional texts that are in force in different parts of the world. Constitutions are at the centre of almost all contemporary legal systems and provide the principles and values that inspire the action of the national law-makers. After a discussion of some topics that are central to the constitutional regulation of religion, the book considers a number of national systems covering countries with a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds. The final section of the book is devoted to the discussion of the constitutional regulation of some particularly controversial issues, such as religious education, the relation between freedom of speech and freedom of religion, abortion, and freedom of conscience.

Book Synopsis Public Television in Poland by : Agnieszka Węglińska
Download or read book Public Television in Poland written by Agnieszka Węglińska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-03 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the professional activity of public television journalists in Poland operating in the still unstable system of a post-communist state, to demonstrate how the media can work in the public interest to strengthen democracy. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Telewizja Polska (TVP) journalists, the author shows how public television in Poland has become highly politicised and commercialised, and must defend against constant attacks on its autonomy. She draws parallels with the media systems in Hungary and the Czech Republic to analyse potential legal solutions and to highlight how Poland’s journalists are subject to influences from the political class as well as from the market – a situation brought about by flawed legislation, the absence of a political culture, an inefficient internal regulating process, and lack of suitable training for the journalists themselves. Adding an important perspective on recently developed media systems, this book will be an important resource for scholars and students of journalism, media studies, media industries, politics and media history.

This new edition incorporates thoroughly updated theory and research as well as expanded case studies that include examples from international markets such as Asia, Europe, and Latin America. It builds on the contributions of the previous edition by providing new references and current data to define and analyze today’s media markets and offers a more expansive assessment of streaming business models as well as the effects of Covid-19 on the media economy. Download or read book Cultural Studies Review written by Chris Healy and Stephen Muecke (eds) and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking and writing about the past, challenging what 'history' might be and how it could appear is an ongoing interest of this journal and an ongoing (sometimes contentious) point of connection between cultural studies and history. The shifts in how we research and write the past is no simple story of accepted breakthroughs that have become the new norms, nor is it a story where it is easy to identify what the effects of cultural studies thinking on the discipline of history has been. History has provided its own challenges to its own practices in a very robust way, while the cultural studies has challenged what the past is and how it might be rendered from a wide ranging set of ideas and modes of representation that have less to do with specific disciplinary arguments than responses to particular modes (textual, filmic, sonic), particular sites (nations, Indigenous temporalities, sexuality, literature, gender) and perhaps a greater willingness to accentuate the political in the historical.

Many data science resources incorporate statistical methods but lack a deeper statistical perspective. If you’re familiar with the R programming language, and have some exposure to statistics, this quick reference bridges the gap in an accessible, readable format. With this book, you’ll learn: Why exploratory data analysis is a key preliminary step in data science How random sampling can reduce bias and yield a higher quality dataset, even with big data How the principles of experimental design yield definitive answers to questions How to use regression to estimate outcomes and detect anomalies Key classification techniques for predicting which categories a record belongs to Statistical machine learning methods that “learn” from data Unsupervised learning methods for extracting meaning from unlabeled data

Book Synopsis The Sociology of Science in Europe by : Robert King Merton
Download or read book The Sociology of Science in Europe written by Robert King Merton and published by Carbondale : Southern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important new field, the social studies of science as an institutionalized research specialty now claims the attention of scholars both in the United States and Europe, as this important contribution shows. The sociology of science is expanding rapidly to all social science as policy makers see its potential for resolving problems dealing with the social aspects of science. Its further importance is shown in this collection of detailed national reviews of research in the specialty from all European countries with a history of significant research in the field. The countries reported on are West Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The contributors are all well-established scholars. In addition to reporting on the state of the discipline, the contributors have compiled comprehensive bibliographical source materials, which have increased rapidly in the last decade and hence may not be familiar to many researchers in other countries. In the first part of this volume, the founding father" of the sociology of science, Robert K. Merton, gives the history of the specialty. Not uncharacteristically, he raises questions on every page, the implications of which will provide abundant research projects and dissertation topics for researchers and their students.
