Book excerpt: This “stirring…emotionally raw” (Publishers Weekly) young adult debut novel about three teens entangled by secret love, open hatred, and the invisible societal constraints wrapped around people both Black and white is perfect for readers of All American Boys and The Hate U Give. There is an unspoken agreement between the racially divided towns of Bayside and Hamilton: no one steps over the train tracks that divide them. Or else. Not until Zach Whitman anyway, a white boy who moves in from Philly and who dreams of music. When he follows his dream across the tracks to meet his idol, the famous jazz musician who owns The Sunlight Record Shop in Hamilton, he’s flung into Capri Collins’s path. Capri has big plans: she wants to follow her late mother’s famous footsteps, dancing her way onto Broadway, and leaving this town for good, just like her older brother, Justin, is planning to do when he goes off to college next year. As sparks fly, Zach and Capri realize that they can help each other turn hope into a reality, even if it means crossing the tracks to do it. But one tragic night changes everything. When Justin’s friend, the star of Hamilton’s football team, is murdered by a white Bayside police officer, the long-standing feud between Bayside and Hamilton becomes an all-out war. And Capri, Justin, and Zach are right in the middle of it.

When car trouble leaves her stranded in a deserted corner of the Rockies, love is the last thing on Teddy Tyler’s mind. But there’s no denying the attraction that grips her the minute she lays eyes on Zach Steele, a rugged security expert staking out a gang of gunrunners in a remote mountain cabin. Zach has survived this long by adhering to a few simple principles: Travel light, travel fast, and travel alone. Now, to keep from blowing his cover, he must hold Teddy hostage for a week—if, that is, he can keep at bay his own simmering feelings for her. Teddy’s not that easily confined, especially when her man’s in danger. So when a simple surveillance job turns into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, she must convince the original lone wolf to let her help—or see their chance at love fall prey to one of Zach’s deadliest enemies.

Book excerpt: Fourteen-year-old Zach Davidson’s burden of being abandoned by his father and raised by a single mother, juggling three jobs, weighed constantly on his mind. Growing up as a late bloomer, black, and bisexual in a predominantly white, rural Utah town only amplified his struggles—until he got abducted by aliens. Then things got crazy. Zach and his friends, Wilkie and Liza, vanish after witnessing UFOs at Blue Lake during a night of fishing and swimming. The trio wakes up in an arid wilderness over two hundred miles away, devoid of any memory of their abduction or how they got there—except for one revelation: they now possess supernatural abilities. As they return to civilization, they find themselves forced into a clandestine world of competing extraterrestrial empires vying for control over Earth through human proxies, all eager to employ Zach, Wilkie, and Liza’s newfound powers. Their journey of discovery unfolds amid navigating through militant human-alien factions and shadow government organizations—with the goal of deciding which of these groups (if any) they should join to stop the impending conquest of Earth. D.B. Gibb’s science fiction novel, The Heroes of February 22nd, Volume I (or HOF22), is set in modern times and captures the spirit of “The Lives of Tao” and “The X-Files.” Written from a historian’s perspective in 2114, it follows key players involved with the historically significant Blue Lake Event (a precursor to the Proxy Wars) on February 22, 2017. Fans of alternative history and science fiction about reluctant heroes thrust into a secretive world of alien abduction and conspiracies will enjoy reading The Heroes of February 22nd, Volume I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of singular (or de re) thought has become central in philosophy of mind and language, yet there is still little consensus concerning the best way to think about the nature of singular thought. Coinciding with recognition of the need for more clarity about the notion, there has been a surge of interest in the concept of a mental file as a way to understand what is distinctive about singular thought. What isn't always clear, however, is what mental files are meant to be, and why we should believe that thoughts that employ them are singular as opposed to descriptive. This volume brings together original chapters by leading scholars which aim to examine and evaluate the viability of the mental files framework for theorizing about singular thought. The first section of the volume addresses the central issues of the definition and nature of singular thought, as well as how it relates to the notion of a mental file. The second section addresses the legitimacy of the mental files conception of singular thought by assessing the philosophical motivations or the purported empirical support for the view, or by laying out a specific version of it. The third section helps to clarify both the notion of a mental file and the mental files conception of singular thought by focusing on their role in explaining de jure coreference in thought and language. The volume then concludes with a final section that casts doubt on the mental files conception and the legitimacy of the file-theoretic framework more generally.

Book excerpt: After spending the night at a retreat dedicated to sensual pleasures, a woman finds herself at the center of a murder investigation in this edge-of-your-seat romantic thriller from New York Times–bestselling author Meryl Sawyer The wolf at the door of Claire Holt’s Taos art gallery is Lobo, a dangerous hybrid of German shepherd and timber wolf belonging to Zach Coulter, the town’s one-time bad boy. Now, instead of running from the law, he is the law. But the homicide-cop-turned-local-sheriff isn’t there to rekindle an old flame. The body of Claire’s business rival has been found at the Hideaway, an illicit club where drugs and sex are bartered in the midnight shadows. And Claire’s wallet and an incriminating piece of intimate clothing have been discovered in the bungalow next to the crime scene. Claire has no alibi—or memory of that night. Did someone drug her to frame her for murder? Claire enlists Zach’s help to find the mysterious stranger who can provide her alibi. In spite of the violent past that binds them, Zach can’t refuse her. Now, he and the girl who used to drive him wild might get a second chance—if he can stop a human predator from killing again.
