Book excerpt: We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/[gamma]* 2!ee− candidates corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 340 pb−1 collected using the D0 detector. Ratios of the Z/[gamma]* + d"n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/[gamma]* cross section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and hadronization.

Book excerpt: The production of a Z boson, decaying into two leptons and produced in association with one or more b jets, is studied using proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were recorded in 2011 with the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1. The Z(ll) + b-jets cross sections (where ll = [mu][mu] or ee) are measured separately for a Z boson produced with exactly one b jet and with at least two b jets. In addition, a cross section ratio is extracted for a Z boson produced with at least one b jet, relative to a Z boson produced with at least one jet. The measured cross sections are compared to various theoretical predictions, and the data favour the predictions in the five-flavour scheme, where b quarks are assumed massless. The kinematic properties of the reconstructed particles are compared with the predictions from the MadGraph event generator using the pythia parton shower simulation.

Differential cross sections are obtained as functions of the ratio of the Z/[gamma]* pT to the sum of all jet transverse momenta and of the ratio of the Z/[gamma]* pT to the leading jet transverse momentum. The data are corrected for detector effects and are compared to simulations based on several QCD calculations.

The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions at leading and next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD.

Book excerpt: The first measurement of the ratio of the W and Z cross sections in association with a single jet, known as the R Jets measurement, is presented. The measurement was performed using 33pb-1 of integrated luminosity, recorded during the year 2010 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. At this time the LHC was operating at a center-of-mass energy of /s = 7 TeV. The measurement is made as a function of the threshold on the jet transverse momentum, from 30 GeV up to a value of 200 GeV. The motivation for this measurement is outlined in terms of providing a stringent test of the Standard Model of particle physics, as well as a model independent tool for searching for new physics. Data driven tools are developed to perform the measurement and their performance is discussed. The result of the measurement is compared with the predictions of Next-to-Leading order perturbative QCD and found to be in good agreement over the entire range of transverse momenta considered.

Inclusive and differential Z/[gamma]∗(→ e+e−)+jets cross sections are measured for jets with a transversemomentum pT(jet) > 30 GeV and rapidity |y(jet)| 4.4. Z boson candidates are identified by their decay into electron pairs. In order to stringently probe the modelling of Z/[gamma]∗+jets production by Monte Carlo generators in regions of high-pT phase space typical for Higgs boson decay and searches for new physics, events with high-pT final states are investigated. High-pT final states are defined as events with either pT(Z) 300 GeV or pT(leading jet) > 300 GeV. A set of four observables, sensitive to the topology of the event, are measured for the standard event selection as well as in the regions of high-pT phase space. The results from data are unfolded to particle level and compared to calculations of the matrix element from Monte Carlo generators Alpgen+Pythia and Sherpa interfaced to a parton shower. The results show that Sherpa tends to model Z/[gamma]∗+jets production in high-pT regions of phase space much better than Alpgen+Pythia." --

In the theory of the strong force within the Standard Model of particle physics - Quantum ChromoDynamics or QCD - confined quarks and gluons from the proton-proton scattering manifest themselves as groups of collimated particles. These particles are clustered into physically measurable objects called hadronic jets. As jets are widely produced at hadron colliders, they are the key physics objects for an early "rediscovery of QCD". This thesis presents the first jet measurement from the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC and confronts the experimental challenges of precision measurements. Inclusive jet cross section data are then used to improve the knowledge of the momentum distribution of quarks and gluons within the proton and of the magnitude of the strong force.
