Book excerpt: YUNUS EMRE & NESIMI THE TWO GREAT TURKISH SUFI POETS Their Lives & Selection of their Poems Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Yunus Emre (d. 132o) is considered one of the most important Turkish poets having a great influence on Turkish literature from his own time until today. His poems concern divine love as well as human love of the Divine as God and the Perfect Master, Beloved, Friend and human destiny and weakness. Little is known of his life other than he became a Sufi dervish Perfect Master (Qutub). A contemporary of Rumi, it is told the two great souls met: Rumi asked Yunus what he thought of his huge work, the Mesnevi. Yunus said, "Excellent! But I would have done it differently." Surprised, Rumi asked how. Yunus replied, "I'd have written, 'I came from the eternal, clothed myself in flesh, took the name Yunus.'" Nesimi (1369-1417) is one of the greatest mystical poets of the late 14th and early 15th centuries and one of the most prominent early masters in Turkish/Azerbaijani literary history. As a direct result of his beliefs he was skinned alive. His tomb in Aleppo remains an important place of pilgrimage to this day. His work consists of two collections of poems, one in Persian and the most important in Turkish that consists of 250-300 ghazels and about 175 roba'is. After his death his work continued to exercise an influence on Turkish language poets and authors. The 600th anniversary of his birth was celebrated worldwide by UNESCO. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of Yunus Emre, who is often referred to as the Turkish national poet, has endured for six centuries. Yunus is the most important representative of early Turkish mysticism; he can be considered the founder of Alevi-Bektasi literature, and his influence on later tekke poetry was enormous. His ilahis (hymns) have played an important role in sufi ceremonies. Grace Martin Smith's translation of Yunus's poetry will acquaint the non-Turkish reader with the art and thinking of one of Turkey's most significant poets and will be helpful to students of both modern and Ottoman Turkish and to all those interested in Islamic poetry and piety.

Book excerpt: 'We are God's and God is Ours' GHAZALS of YUNUS EMRETranslation & Introduction Paul SmithYunus Emre (d. Yunus replied, "I'd have written, 'I came from the eternal, clothed myself in flesh, took the name Yunus.'" This illustrates his simple approach that has made him loved by many. Here is the largest selection of his poems translated into English mainly in the form of the ghazal that he often used. The rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these beautiful, mystical poems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MANSUR AL-HALLAJ & NESIMITWO GREAT SUFI-MARTYR POETSSelected PoemsTranslation & Introduction Paul SmithThe Perfect Master, poet & martyr, MANSUR AL-HALLAJ (died 919), was born in Shiraz and tortured and executed in Baghdad for declaring: "I am the Truth (Anal Haq)." Much has been written about his famous (and infamous) statement, but few of his powerful, often mysteries and always deeply conscious and spiritual poems in Arabic have been translated into English, and in the poetic form in which they were composed. Now here they are! Included is The Tawasin. 'Written in rhymed Arabic prose... it sets forth a doctrine of saintship-a doctrine founded on personal experience and clothed in the form of a subtle yet passionate dialectic.' This is a free-form poetic translation that captures the beauty and meaning and the mystery and the profundity of this controversial classic of Sufism. The Introduction contains : The Life, Times and Works of Mansur al-Hallaj, The Perfect Master (Qutub), 'Anal-Haq' or 'I am the Truth' of Mansur Hallaj, etc. There is a wide selection of his qit'as, ghazals, ruba'is, qasidas. NESIMI (1369-1417) is considered one of the greatest Sufi poets and one of the most prominent early masters in Turkish literary history. Very little is known for certain about his life, including his real name. It is also possible that he was descended from the Prophet Mohammed since he has sometimes been accorded the title of seyyid that is reserved for people claimed to be in Muhammad's line of descent. From his poetry, it's evident that Nesimi was greatly influenced by MANSUR AL-HALLAJ and as a direct result of his beliefs that were considered blasphemous by contemporary religious authorities he was seized and according to most accounts... skinned alive in Aleppo. A number of legends later grew up around his execution, such as the story that he mocked his executioners with improvised verse and, after the execution, draped his flayed skin around his shoulders and departed. His tomb in Aleppo remains an important place of pilgrimage to this day. His work consists of two collections of poems, one in Persian and the other, Turkish. The Turkish Divan consists of 250-300 gazels and about 150 roba'is. After his death his work continued to exercise a great influence on many Turkish language poets and authors. Introduction on his Life & Times & Poetry and the Forms he wrote in. The correct rhyme & meaning are both here in these beautiful, powerful, often controversial poems. Large Format 7" x 10" Pages 554.Paul Smith (b.1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Shah Latif, Bulleh Shah, Mahsati, Lalla Ded, Rahman Baba, Iqbal, Makhfi, Ghalib, Zafar Abu Nuwas, Rabi'a, Aatish, Dadu, Rahim, Vrind, Huma, Rudaki and many others, as well as poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and a dozen screenplays. www.newhumanitybook.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yunus Emre (ca. 1240 - ca. 1321 C.E.), a contemporary of Mevlana Jalal al-Din Rumi, is considered to be one of the greatest Turkish poets. His poetry, written in old Turkish language of the common people of the day, expresses a deep personal devotion to Islam, mysticism (Sufism), humanity and love for God, His Last Prophet Muhammad (S) and mankind. He lived at a time of great tribulation following the Mongol invasion and political bickering and unrest that resulted in Anatolia. Yunus traveled among the local rulers as a volunteer for peace, sowing the seeds of love, compassion and unity. Who can deny the need of such an intellectual in the post-9/11 era of world-disorder? His poetry has been honored by the UNESCO), which proclaimed 1991 the International Yunus Emre Year, recognizing his poetry as a quintessential representation of humanistic values. Despite his enormous popularity among the Turkish people, most westerners are unaware of Yunus Emre.In this book, after introducing the poet and his time, Habib Siddiqui shares some of Yunus Emre's translated poems, whose messages of love and freeing oneself from the prison of the self are very relevant to bringing about peace and harmony in our time.

Book excerpt: NIYAZI (1616-1694) was born in the small town of Aspuzi and was a poet of considerable talent. Sufism is the key-note of this poet's work; whatever else is to be found in his Divan is of secondary importance. It is obvious from many of his poems that at some time in his life he became a Perfect Master (Qutub) a God-realized soul. Although Niyazi wrote a good deal of prose his poetical work is confined to his Divan, which is restricted to gazels and qasidas... some of which are in Arabic while in others the lines are alternately in Arabic and Turkish. GAIBI (b. 1615-1620) was from a religious and when he was young, he received his teaching and training from them. After some years Gaibi joined the Malamet (blameless) Sufi order that goes back to the famous and infamous Sufi Perfect Master and Poet, Mansur al-Hallaj. In his gazels, qasidas he beautifully and powerfully states that the Absolute is the Perfect Master or God-realized soul who guides the lover of God along the Path through Love. Introduction on both poets Lives, Poetry & Times, Turkish Language & Poetry, Form of the Gazel & the Qasida, God-Realization, Sufism in Poetry. Three Appendixes, two on Malameti Sufism. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept and the meaning of all of these beautiful, powerful, spiritual poems. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (7 x 10) Paperback Edition. Pages 459.
