Book excerpt: An interactive assessment tool and companion manual for wealthy families and their financial advisors that analyze the behaviors and knowledge that impact a family’s overall wealth, while also providing best practices needed for improvement The Family Wealth Sustainability Toolkit gives wealthy individuals, family offices, and the financial planners, advisors and wealth managers who counsel them, the tools they need to better assess their wealth sustainability skills. One part assessment software tool and one part companion book, the online Index allows readers to assess their family enterprise across four dimensions of sustainability, while the Manual acts both as a roadmap to analyzing their results and provides a foundation in best practices. The index asks individual family members to assess how much the family, as a unit, utilizes best practices to help build structures, decision making processes, and leadership over generations. The manual shows readers how to reflect on what’s working in their family to build and maintain sustainable wealth and how to fix what isn’t. Throughout both components, the authors emphasize the importance of human, intellectual, and social capital, as well as financial capital, as drivers to sustainability over the long haul. The Family Wealth Sustainability Toolkit: Helps affluent families and their advisors assess how well they are managing wealth now and for the future Evaluates wealth sustainability practices to help readers find out what’s working and what’s not Emphasizes the importance of human, intellectual, and social capital, as well as financial capital, in the quest for wealth sustainability Comprehensive and highly practical, The Family Wealth Sustainability Index carefully explains exactly how affluent families and their financial advisors can best utilize and prepare their wealth now and for generations to come.

Book excerpt: In Uncivil Youth, Soo Ah Kwon explores youth of color activism as linked to the making of democratic citizen-subjects. Focusing attention on the relations of power that inform the social and political practices of youth of color, Kwon examines how after-school and community-based programs are often mobilized to prevent potentially "at-risk" youth from turning to "juvenile delinquency" and crime. These sorts of strategic interventions seek to mold young people to become self-empowered and responsible citizens. Theorizing this mode of youth governance as "affirmative governmentality," Kwon investigates the political conditions that both enable youth of color to achieve meaningful change and limit their ability to do so given the entrenchment of nonprofits in the logic of a neoliberal state. She draws on several years of ethnographic research with an Oakland-based, panethnic youth organization that promotes grassroots activism among its second-generation Asian and Pacific Islander members (ages fourteen to eighteen). While analyzing the contradictions of the youth organizing movement, Kwon documents the genuine contributions to social change made by the young people with whom she worked in an era of increased youth criminalization and anti-immigrant legislation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores ways nonprofits can foster lifelong philanthropic habit in today's youth. Editor Bill Stanczykiewicz, president and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute, and contributors examine successful youth engagement programs that illustrate that philanthropy is a habit that can be demonstrated, taught, and inculcated at a very young age. Progams discussed include a YMCA program encouraging civic activity among children with backgrounds in lower-income communities and lower academic achievement which demonstrates that the instruction of philanthropic values and behaviors can transcend traditional qualifiers of income and education. Contributors also present results of a four-year study on college undergraduates who earn college scholarships that require recipients to participate in community service, and show how they reveal increased philanthropic values these students, in addition to other personal skills that benefit civic engagement and service to others. Other aspects of youth philanthropy examined include the significant legal issues surrounding adolescents raising money for organizations, youth serving on nonprofit boards, and youth casting deciding votes on board matters. The issue also includes an informative primer on youth and philanthropy that demonstrates how young people learn philanthropic behavior from several sectors within civil society, including community foundations, nonprofit organizations, schools, and government. With insight from professionals in the field, as well as the passionate voices of philanthropic youth themselves, this issue illustrates how we must be actively engaged in the lives of children and youth -- in our families and in our communities - not just to develop healthy habits of philanthropy, but for their overall healthy development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together in one place the liberal and conservative arguments that face the Republican and Democratic parties in the run-up to the 2008 election. In each chapter, David Coates lays out the popular conservative case and then presents a point-by-point liberal response. Each chapter challenges right-wing ways of framing the issue and pulls discussion back into the civilized center of American politics. The sources and evidence sustaining both conservative and liberal arguments are listed in endnotes and developed more fully on an associated blog site. A Liberal Tool Kit helps to redress the conservative bias in the way news and arguments are generally reported. Coates argues that conservative media outlets are currently more powerful and numerous than liberal ones, contending that conservative arguments tend to be presented more clearly than their less simplistic, more nuanced liberal alternatives. In this book, he presents the complexities of the conservative arguments while at the same time clarifying liberal positions in straightforward, everyday language, so leveling the playing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been few, if any, attempts to translate the immense library of academic studies on gender norms for a lay audience, or to illustrate practical ways in which their insights could (and should) be applied. Similarly, there have been few attempts to build the case for gender in diverse fields like health, education, and economic security within a single book, one which also uses an intersectional lens to address issues of race and class. This book not only looks at the impact of rigid gender norms on young people who internalize them, but also shows how the health, educational, and criminal justice systems with which young people interact are also highly gendered systems that relentlessly police and sustain very narrow ideas of masculinity and femininity, particularly among youth. Current treatments of a “gender lens” or “gender analysis” both at home and abroad usually conflate gender with women and/or trans. Gender Norms and Intersectionality shows conclusively how this is both inadequate and wrong-headed. It documents why gender norms must be moved to the center of the discourses aimed at improving life outcomes for at-risk communities. And it does so while acknowledging the insights of queer theorists about bodies, power, and difference. This book provides a starting point for a long overdue movement to elevate “applied gender studies,” providing both a reference and guide for researchers, students, policymakers, funders, non-profit leaders, and grassroots advocates. It aims to transform readers’ view of a broad array of familiar social problems, such as basic wellness and reproductive health; education; economic security; and partner, male-on-male, and school violence—showing how gender norms are an integral if overlooked key to understanding each.
