After a nearly fatal car accident, Kiara isn’t as healthy as she makes everyone believe. Dealing with nightmares and PTSD by herself isn’t fun, but being too independent, she doesn’t want anyone knowing how much she’s struggling. Lack of sleep and appetite eventually catch up with her and she gets sick. Storm, Jenson, and Reece Cage, ranch owners, have been attracted to Kiara for a long time. However, Storm didn’t think he and his brothers should begin courting her after she was injured in the accident. That all changes when they realize she’s sick and the three brothers are determined to woo her into their lives. Kiara doesn’t stand a chance of keeping the brothers at a distance and soon finds herself in a relationship with the three cowboys. But there’s danger abound and when Kiara is lured into peril, it will take all three of the Cage brothers to rescue her. Becca Van is a Siren-exclusive author.

Book excerpt: Spirit and Soul: Odyssey of a Black Man in America, Volume One, an engaging, edifying autobiography by Theodore Kirkland, offers critical insight and politically cognizant commentary on the past, future and real-time reality of race relations in America. His long career in law enforcement some 39 years total as a military police officer, Buffalo police officer, New York State parole board commissioner and adjunct professor begins by happenstance in the Air Force. Instead of being sent to gunnery school as he requested, he is ordered to report to the Army Military Police Academy in Camp Gordon, Georgia. Kirkland's narrative voice in this page turner is clear, self-effacing and relentlessly candid unapologetic for the black and white of his experience, and cautionary in his instruction for navigation through the gray. Yet in every syllable, there is a remarkable, palpable love for his family, friends and community and unyielding commitment to upholding the Constitutional promise that "all men are created equal." Spirit and Soul: Odyssey of a Black Man in America, Volume One is at once witty and wise; poignant, wistful and meticulously illustrative of an American perspective too often shadowed by stereotypes that contend that Black men contribute primarily to the prison population. It also is an important chronology of the evolution of African American life and experience from Jim Crow to contemporary "Post-racial America."

Book excerpt: Handsome Rob Baron had a keen eye for business, yet maintained a conservative approach to life. His wife, Julia, with her fiery red hair and emerald green eyes possessed a marketing mind and a writer's sense of creativity, which caused her to view life from a different perspective. They pooled their resources and entered a new chapter of their lives as owners of The Madera Market. The pair soon discovered that their dream of business ownership had turned into a nightmare so powerful it kept drawing Julia deeper and deeper towards its vortex, one horrific dream sequence at a time. There were singular events in Julia Baron's life that seemed innocuous, leaving little cause for her personal concern. But little did Julia realize that collectively these events could and would alter her life and disrupt the usual, customary and orderly existence she shared with her husband and family. Most people think they live uneventful, average lives. They think nothing out-of-the-ordinary could ever happen to them. Julia Baron was like everyone else. She was just an ordinary person with one exception her life just happened to take some extraordinary turns leading her on a journey far removed from her sheltered world into a dark underworld of secrets and perversions far beyond her wildest imagination. Julia Baron found herself amidst the underbelly of society where subcultures thrived on drugs, promoted prostitution and pornography and were capable of many things even murder. She had become an unwilling player in a game that had no rules and knew no boundaries and her only way to gain back control of her life was to find the "Pieces of the Puzzle".

The victim suffers a two-month latent period during which he is infectious but shows no symptoms. The virus is spread by aerosol, so that millions of people are soon infected and infectious, but without knowing it. At the "climax" of he disease, there is what a character calls "a rite of distribution." At the climax the victim does what he or she most wanted or feared doing, the idea being that this kind of fear is laced with fascination. As America (like the rest of the world) sinks into chaos, as the Red Deaths kills forty percent of the population, two fiercely antagonistic groups emerge. There's the apocalyptic religious group called Swimmers, because their charismatic leader was first seen swimming out of the Hudson River. The other group jokingly calls itself Our Gang, a very mixed group that has become immune to the plague as a by-product of an experimental treatment of herpes. What they see and do as they hike north from New York City to a farm upstate forms the substance of the novel.
