Book excerpt: The thrilling career of ATF agent Cynthia Beebe is told through the lens of six-high profile cases involving bombings, arson, and the Hell's Angels. Boots in the Ashes is the memoir of Cynthia Beebe's groundbreaking career as one of the first women special agents for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (ATF). A smart and independent girl growing up in suburban Chicago, she unexpectedly became one of the first women to hunt down violent criminals for the federal government. As a special agent for 27 years, Beebe gives the reader first-hand knowledge of the human capacity for evil. She tells the story of how, as a young woman, she overcame many obstacles on her journey through the treacherous world of illegal guns, gangs, and bombs. She battled conflicts both on the streets and within ATF. But Beebe learned how to thrive in the ultra-masculine world of violent crime and those whose job it is to stop it. Beebe tells her story through the lens of six major cases that read like crime fiction: four bombings, one arson fire and a massive roundup of the Hell's Angels on the West Coast. She also shares riveting never before revealed trial testimonies, including killers, bombers, arsonists, victims, witnesses and judges.

Book excerpt: Through a variety of archival documents, artefacts, illustrations, and references to primary and secondary literature, On the Job explores the changing styles, business practices, and lived experiences of the people who make, sell, and wear service-industry uniforms in the United States. It highlights how the uniform business is distinct from the fashion business, including how manufacturing developed outside of the typical fashion hubs such as New York City; and gives attention to the ways that various types of employers (small business, corporate, government and others) differ in their ambitions and regulations surrounding uniforms. On the Job sheds new light on an understudied yet important field of dress and clothing within everyday life, and is an essential addition to any fashion historian's library, appealing to all those interested in material culture, the service industry, heritage and history.

Book excerpt: The job of theater manager is unrecognized by many and defined differently, depending on the employer. Some managers are elevated versions of a head usher while others have financial responsibilities which number into the millions. This heuristic study focuses on union theater managers. the managers speak to the experience of managing by defining their daily tasks, how they interact with show personnel, prepare their staffs for emergencies, handle difficult customers and survive in the entertainment industry which is known for its shark-filled environment. There is sparse literature about this field and job classification. the subject often warrants no more than a few paragraphs in books about other topics such as producing or stage managing. This work dissects the job in terms of supervising theater staff, interacting with unions, facility management, show personnel and providing customer service. It details financial concerns, instructing how to budget theater costs for an incoming show, calculate a gross potential, check a box office statement, read a show contract and prepare a settlement. Through the text and in separate appendixes are examples of important documents such as emergency and life safety procedures, theater specs and samples of building and performance-related forms which can be modeled for venue use. the concept of managerial imagination is developed as an important career tool. the theater managers interviewed demonstrate through observation or involvement how to think creatively and come up with solutions to problems when resources are inadequate or non-existent. Concluding these chapters are interviews with industry professionals who offer unique insights into a group of people who have made theater their life's work. Their words show a solid belief in the continued growth of the industry into the 21st century. the job of the theater manager has always been an intricate part of the theatrical community and will be a necessary component as a decade begins which will blend new technology with old challenges in both front of house and backstage.
