Book excerpt: YOU KIN DO IT, CHILE, (You Can Do It, Child) tells of an unusual and poignant relationship between a black, horse trainer in his eighties and a young blond girl growing up on a farm in Tennessee. At a period in history, still affected by resentments and injustices of the Civil War, Maxie and Uncle Sandy cement a bond of friendship that transcends all opinions and established mores of the time. Uncle Sandy, born a slave, rose above his status by educating himself, becoming a world acclaimed Arabian horse trainer and passing on a wisdom and honor to the small child who loved and admired him, which enabled her to succeed in subsequent traumas of adult life. Maxwell's observations and first hand experiences among both aristocrats and farmers, gleaned from ancestors who predated the Civil War, gives credence and color to this touching novel of homecoming. The stories of a southern farm before and during World War II continue to that "far off land," California, where Uncle Sandy accompanies sixty Arabian hosses under his care. Although never having left Tennessee, he joins the family in the monumental move, not wanting his "horses" to go without him. The emotions of him and Maxie are similar and terrifying, facing a lonely ranch life, far from Tennessee. Their deep love for each other reaches an emotional climax when she flies with him on his last trip home.

Book excerpt: Paul Laurence Dunbar was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to parents who had been enslaved in Kentucky before the American Civil War, Dunbar began writing stories and verse when he was a child. He published his first poems at the age of 16 in a Dayton newspaper, and served as president of his high school's literary society. Dunbar's popularity increased rapidly after his work was praised by William Dean Howells, a leading editor associated with Harper's Weekly. Dunbar became one of the first African-American writers to establish an international reputation. In addition to his poems, short stories, and novels, he also wrote the lyrics for the musical comedy In Dahomey (1903), the first all-African-American musical produced on Broadway in New York. The musical later toured in the United States and the United Kingdom. Suffering from tuberculosis, which then had no cure, Dunbar died in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 33. Much of Dunbar's more popular work in his lifetime was written in the "Negro dialect" associated with the antebellum South, though he also used the Midwestern regional dialect of James Whitcomb Riley. Dunbar also wrote in conventional English in other poetry and novels and is considered the first important African American sonnet writer. Since the late 20th century, scholars have become more interested in these other works. Book excerpt: Soraya has always had bad dreamsnightmares reallyfor as long as her memory stretched. She never paid them much serious attention until now. This one was different. In this dream, she saw somebody murdered. And while she knew it was just a dream, she felt like there was more to it. She needed answers, and the old lady at the Home Shop was where she was drawn to ask her questions. Harlem Angel is about one of those insidious layers of evil that exists alongside and underneath the normal, real world. A young lady is drawn reluctantly into the struggle between races and those with and without power and learns that magic exists, that she is gifted, and that her gifts are needed. Will she be able to meet the challenge, or will she die along with those she needs to protect?

Beloved and thought by many to be the greatest of the American novels, Gone with the Wind is a story of love, hope and loss set against the tense historical background of the American Civil War. The lovers at the novel’s centre – the selfish, privileged Scarlett O’Hara and rakish Rhett Butler – are magnetic: pulling readers into the tangled narrative of a struggle to survive that cannot be forgotten. WINNER OF NATIONAL BOOK AWARD AND PULITZER PRIZE 'For sheer readability I can think of nothing it must give way before' The New Yorker 'What makes some people come through catastrophes and others, apparently just as able, strong, and brave, go under?’ Margaret Mitchell

Book excerpt: Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet during the start of the 20th century. Born to ex-slave parents, Dunbar began writing at a very early age and had published his first poems by the age of 16 in a local newspaper. Much of his work was written in the "African-American Vernacular" associated with the antebellum South, although he also employed conventional English in his novels and poems. Dunbar was among the first African-American writers to garner international acclaim for their work. This volume contains a collection of Dunbar's best short stories, originally published in three books. “Folks from Dixie” (1898) comprises 12 stories and was Dunbar's first collection, as well as the first volume of short stories ever published in the United States by an African American. “The Strength of Gideon and Other Stories” (1899) was Dunbar's second collection, including 20 short stories. Originally published in 1904, “The Heart of Happy Hollow” contains sixteen short stories that explore African American life post-Civil War. A fantastic collection of powerful tales that offer a unique glimpse into the lives of African Americans at the turn of the century. Other notable works by this author include: “Oak and Ivy” (1892), “Majors and Minors” (1896), and “Lyrics of Lowly Life” (1896). Read & Co. Classics is proudly publishing this brand new collection of classic short stories now complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author and original illustrations by E. W. Kemble.
