Book excerpt: Being a celebrity publicist at a Los Angeles PR firm isn’t the glamour job Alex Davidson thought it would be. Her love life is zilch, her newest client—an actor fresh out of rehab—keeps hitting on her, and all she has in her refrigerator is a half-empty bottle of Pinot Grigio. But her wisecracking gay assistant and her spark plug of a best friend give her reasons for crawling out of bed in the morning (well, most of the time). Everything changes the day her firm is bought out by a rival agency and Alex finds her once secure job of wanly ministering to a roster of B-list celebrities suddenly at stake. It looks like Suzanne, Alex’s old boss and mentor, is being shown the door. And G, her new boss, wants bigger clients and more exposure. But certain things just don’t add up: Why did G refuse to help Suzanne when a big client—a hot Latina singer/actress hell-bent on world domination—decided to bolt from the firm? And why is he being so nice to Alex all of a sudden? Knowing that in Hollywood there are always strings attached, Alex does a little digging and uncovers a dirty scheme that, if brought to light, will rock the entertainment industry. Will the temptation to betray Suzanne and accept a lucrative offer from G be too powerful for Alex to ignore? Or can she save her job, keep her soul, and score a victory for women in Hollywood? So 5 Minutes Ago is a laugh-out-loud novel about one young woman’s attempt to make it in the shark-infested waters of Hollywood. Set in the sun-drenched L.A. of celebrity-magazine photo shoots, velvet-roped VIP parties, and red-carpet events, Hilary de Vries’s debut novel takes us on a wildly entertaining romp with enough juicy behind-the-scenes action to satisfy even the most insatiable celebraholic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's a slippery slide from hormones to homicide!" Meet Debbi Dickerson: mousy, codependent housewife who, at age forty-seven, feels her life is over. Her dreams of being an artist have long been discarded in the wake of her failing marriage, and her kids think she’s invisible. She’s stuck on the hamster wheel, going nowhere. That is, until menopause blindsides her. Derailed by one symptom after another, Debbi struggles to find a way to quell the hot flashes, night sweats, sudden panic attacks, and unbridled rage. The gals in her scrapbooking club give her advice on how to survive menopause, but nothing seems to help ... except killing. Meet Jerry Dickerson, Debbi’s husband: arrogant, insensitive, all-around jerk, whose greatest dream as a homicide detective is to catch a serial killer and be admired, for once. So when a series of strange deaths break out in Tacoma, Washington, Jerry is elated, but the pressure is on to catch the killer. Jerry’s boss, Sergeant Myra Manners, is also going through menopause and makes his life hell. And then there’s his teenage daughter dishing out hormones like Girl Scout cookies. Seriously, what’s a misogynist to do? Have an affair with some bubblehead, of course. As the bodies pile up, more than dishes are going to fly. Yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel of menopause and Debbi can see it. But is it a bright future or the headlights of an incoming train with Jerry's name on it? Don't miss this hilarious dark comedy caper! Your sides will hurt from laughing. The Menopause Murders, through poignant comedy, explores deep themes of sexism, ageism, and self-image issues that millions of women (and men!)—particularly those of the baby boomer generation—are facing daily and struggling with, in order to find sense, meaning, and sanity amid the insanity that is our current political and cultural state. Praise for this dark comedy women's fiction! "The Menopause Murders is a fabulous book that is not only well written but the characters will make you identify and scream with laughter. As an age activist, I found the stories are right on about ageism and all the pressing issues women today face. Not one to miss!" —Barbara Rose Brooker, author, The Viagra Diaries, and founder of the Age Equality Movement "If you like your comedy dark and dotty, check out THE MENOPAUSE MURDERS by Mary Maloney and Ed Markel. Times are changing for Debbi Dickerson, dutiful housewife, loving mother, and … serial killer? Turn down the thermostat before you turn the first page, because THE MENOPAUSE MURDERS is a hot (flash) romp through the world of female friendships, mendacious men, and hormonal horrors." —Melissa DeCarlo, author of The Art of Crash Landing "This book was everything!! Dark comedy galore. I know that it sounds odd. But I was entranced by this book. I couldn't put it down it was so good." —Lori C. "Loved this book, it was very descriptive of menopause, a quiet woman who literally loses the plot with a cheating husband, who just happens to be the detective on the job, loved it. Excited to read more books from this author." —Debbie D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO JERRY PICCO? Farewell My Lovely meets Californication... Meet Jack Storm PhD, disgraced ex-college professor and unlicensed PI. Since getting turfed out of Berkeley for violent misconduct, he's turned his brains and his 250-pound frame to solving crimes. Working out of Los Angeles (and the trunk of his 20 year-old Mercedes Benz), Jack has finally found his true place in life: the gutter. When Jerry Picco goes missing, Jack is called in to help. Picco is the world's greatest 'erotic actor', and his disappearance has come at a difficult time for the diminutive porn star. He's left a heap of debt, a career in nosedive, and a screen partner with plenty reasons to want him gone. Jack has his own reasons for trying to find him. Apart from anything else, he's one of Jerry's biggest fans. The only clues he's got: a Polaroid of seven little men in the woods, and some story about a princess. For fans of Carl Hiaasen and Janet Evanovich, What Ever Happened to Jerry Picco? is a romp of a noir from prize-winning author John Barlow. WHAT READERS ARE SAYING A lot of dry humor throughout, but at its heart, this is a seriously told story, and I'm hoping the private eye and his newly found assistant make further appearances. It isn't easy to write this kind of thing in the 21st century and be convincing... datrappet, LibraryThing There are some great scenes here. Maintains the momentum from start to finish... I look forward to seeing this detective team in a sequel. James Mowry, Am'zon

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, Jack Harrington is making discoveries of his own and finds himself juggling personal and professional commitments. The Phoenix Legion is about to implement the final phase of its master plan and this time Schiffer is convinced that nothing can stop him from realising his goal. With the past merging with the present, the elements of a deadly conclusion are finally coming together. Will history repeat itself or can another worldwide catastrophe be avoided? Book excerpt: From an early age, Bill Medley had a passion for music. School glee club and amateur singing contests soon gave way to the albums of Ray Charles and Little Richard. That raw R&B influence would profoundly shape Medley's musical future. As the pioneering “blue-eyed soul” group the Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and late partner Bobby Hatfield sang such huge hits as “(You're My) Soul and Inspiration,” “Unchained Melody,” and “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin',” the latter recognized by BMI as the most-played song of the twentieth century. Medley's duet with Jennifer Warnes for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, “(I've Had) the Time of My Life,” became a worldwide No. 1 single on its way to winning an Oscar, a Grammy, and a Golden Globe. But Medley's story isn't just about the hits and the awards. It's about an immensely talented man who reached the pinnacle of fame, success, and excess, until the shocking murder of his wife, Karen. In time, this tragedy eventually helped him renew his commitment to both faith and family.

Book excerpt: A bundle of books #1 (IF SHE KNEW), #2 (IF SHE SAW) and #3 (IF SHE RAN) in Blake Pierce’s Kate Wise Mystery series! This bundle offers books one, two and three in one convenient file, with over 150,000 words of reading. In IF SHE KNEW, 55 year old empty nester—and freshly retired FBI agent—Kate Wise finds herself drawn out of her quiet suburban life when her friend’s daughter is murdered in a home invasion—and she is implored to help. Kate thought she left the FBI behind after 30 years as their top agent, respected for her brilliant mind, tough street skills and her uncanny ability to hunt down serial killers. Yet Kate, bored with the quiet town, at a crossroads in life, is summoned by a friend she can’t turn down. As Kate hunts the killer, she soon finds herself at the forefront of a manhunt, as more bodies turn up—all suburban moms in perfect marriages—and it becomes apparent there is a serial killer stalking this quiet town. In IF SHE SAW, when a couple is found murdered and no suspects are apparent, Kate Wise finds herself called out of retirement (and her quiet suburban life) to come back and work for the bureau. Kate’s brilliant mind and unrivaled ability to enter the mind of serial killers is just too indispensable, and the FBI needs her to crack this baffling case. Why were two couples found murdered, 50 miles apart, and in the same manner? What can they possibly have in common? The answer, Kate realizes, is urgent—as she is certain the killer is about to strike again. In IF SHE RAN, Kate Wise is called back in from retirement when a second husband from a wealthy suburb is found murdered, shot to death on his way home. Can it be a coincidence? There was one case that has haunted Kate her entire career, the one that she couldn’t solve. Now, 10 years later, a second husband is killed in the same way—and from the same, exclusive town. What is the connection? And can Kate redeem herself, and solve it before it goes cold again? Dark psychological thrillers with heart-pounding suspense, the Kate Wise mystery series is a riveting new series—with a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night. Book #4 in the series, IF SHE HID is also now available for pre-order!
