Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started in fine dining the summer of '79. At the time Perrier was the rage. The in thing was to order, and be heard ordering, Perrier. This bottle sat on everyone's table - an excellent drink with dinner and wine. My book is a collection of memories that I recall all too often - thoughts of events that occurred over twenty-five years that are too interesting not to be told. The best I can do is let you read about them. I wish I could tell you....I wish you were there. Being a waiter, and especially a maitre d', was fun not knowing what unique experience would occur today, and involve me. Unintentionally and willingly I had the best job of my life. If any waiter, or restaurant employee, or any type of worker had a more interesting or exciting job than I, more power to them.

Book excerpt: A fire they can’t put out . . . Although her baby boy keeps her plate full, Jules Kilroy is ready to take her love life off the back burner—which means getting back into the dating scene. And while she might wish her best friend, Taddeo DeLuca, would see the potential of them as a couple, in her heart of hearts she knows it’s not to be. He rejected her once and she’s vowed never to blur the lines again . . . After a lifetime of excuses and false starts, Tad has finally opened a wine bar, a deal made even sweeter when Jules joins his staff. Lovers come and go, and he’s had his share, but friendships like theirs last forever. Yet, ever since he tasted her, he can’t stop fantasizing about what could be. And when she signs up for an online dating site, the thought of his Jules with another man makes his blood boil. Tad might have made a mistake with his best girl before, but this time he’s determined to beg her forgiveness . . . one scorching kiss at a time.

Book excerpt: Copy the following link for free access to the first chapter of this title: http://www.springerlink.com/content/j23468h304310755/fulltext.pdf This book is a warning. It aims to warn policy-makers, industry, academia, civil society organisations, the media and the public about the threats and vulnerabilities facing our privacy, identity, trust, security and inclusion in the rapidly approaching world of ambient intelligence (AmI). In the near future, every manufactured product – our clothes, money, appliances, the paint on our walls, the carpets on our floors, our cars, everything – will be embedded with intelligence, networks of tiny sensors and actuators, which some have termed “smart dust”. The AmI world is not far off. We already have surveillance systems, biometrics, personal communicators, machine learning and more. AmI will provide personalised services – and know more about us – on a scale dwarfing anything hitherto available. In the AmI vision, ubiquitous computing, communications and interfaces converge and adapt to the user. AmI promises greater user-friendliness in an environment capable of recognising and responding to the presence of different individuals in a seamless, unobtrusive and often invisible way. While most stakeholders paint the promise of AmI in sunny colours, there is a dark side to AmI. This book aims to illustrate the threats and vulnerabilities by means of four “dark scenarios”. The authors set out a structured methodology for analysing the four scenarios, and then identify safeguards to counter the foreseen threats and vulnerabilities. They make recommendations to policy-makers and other stakeholders about what they can do to maximise the benefits from ambient intelligence and minimise the negative consequences.

Book excerpt: When a killer stalks a provocative talk show host, ex-FBI agent Gregor Demarkian is the next guest in this mystery from the author of Quoth the Raven. Sex, sex, and more sex—this is the formula for a hit talk show. No one knows this better than Lotte Goldman, host of television’s most outrageous chat show, but even she is getting bored of her sensational interviews. To break the routine, she and her producer—the towering, dynamic DeAnna Kroll—take the show to Philadelphia to film a conversation between ex-FBI agent Gregor Demarkian and a convicted serial killer. But before they hit the road, a murder hits them. Lotte’s talent coordinator is found dead in a closet, her face battered beyond recognition, and a second victim appears soon after they arrive in Philadelphia. To save the most popular woman on TV, Demarkian leaps into a cat-and-mouse game so twisted that it’s perfect for premium cable.
