Book excerpt: All My Springs: Journey of a Lifetime In All My Springs: Journey of a Lifetime, author Carol L. Evans invites readers to share a life (her life)that like spring itselfis constantly being renewed and reborn. This lovely and lively collection of personal essays, short stories and poems will quickly compel readers to find a comfortable chair and quiet time to savor the newness of Evans writing. The writing is mature, but not stale. It is skilled, yet extremely poetic. Her short story, The Little House in the Cul de Sac, is a beautiful, yet disturbing tale of mental illness. In it, the narrator deftly unfolds a poignant modern-day tale of a deeply troubled mind wresting with reality and normalcy. By Jennifer D. Book Synopsis The Three Christs of Ypsilanti by : Milton Rokeach
Download or read book The Three Christs of Ypsilanti written by Milton Rokeach and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II. The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serves as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity.”
Download or read book Lucky Dogs written by Jerry E. Strahan and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When walking the French Quarter and watching a Lucky Dog salesman set up that colorful cart and call out to entice customers, don't you wonder how such a business works? As a knowing review in Rolling Stone stated, "People have always loved the cart and harbored a mysterious need to ride it. Revelers have been known to climb on top of the rolling wienies, screaming 'Yippee kaya!' as vendors stoically push them back to the barn at 4 a.m." Since 1947 the red and yellow carts have trumpeted good fortune and sustenance. Jerry E. Strahan recounts the wild adventures of the Bourbon Street wienie salesmen but also takes readers well beyond New Orleans. In fact, he takes them halfway around the world, where this unique pushcart business maneuvered its way through the bureaucratic red tape of a communist country to become a licensed corporation in the People's Republic of China. In China, two points quickly became apparent to Strahan. First, 99 percent of the Chinese population had no idea what a Lucky Dog cart represented. One elderly passerby declared it to be a missile. Second, the success or failure of any joint venture in the Asian nation is directly proportional to the political clout of that company's local partner. Lucky Dogs also recounts how the business and its vendors survived Hurricane Katrina. Miraculously, it reopened only six months after the storm in a city where more than 80 percent of the landmass had been flooded and where less than 40 percent of the population had returned. To reestablish itself in what many described as Third World conditions, the company had to transform its operation. This work mixes business history, autobiography, survival story, and an insider's look at the bizarre lives of some of Bourbon Street's most quirky characters--the dauntless Lucky Dog vendors. Both humorous and tragic, though it may read like fiction, it is, for better or worse, all fact.

Book Synopsis Walk With Me Awhile by : M. Scott Campbell
Download or read book Walk With Me Awhile written by M. Scott Campbell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate portrait of many of my best works from the last two decades: a collection of essays, pictures, lyrics and poetry... The essays range all across the philosophical wheel: a math proof attempt, discussions on metaphysics, sub-atomic physics, spirituality, sexuality, the dreaded modal fallacy, metaphor theory, social protest theory, music theory, cognition theory, consumerism, literature reviews, Project Management, Burkean pentad theory, visual censorship, and, well, many, many more... The Poems are, as many of you might realize, fairly fluid and abstract -- and speak truths from my heart and soul. Caveats: 1. I have been known to use the ""F"" word in some of my poetry -- just sayin', you have been warned... 2. Some of my essays are extremely controversial, as I tend to kick the elephant in the middle of the room from time to time... This would be a fantastic piece to set on your coffee table (unless, of course, you expect young children of a reading age to wander through unattended)...
Book Synopsis Leaving Home--Finding Home by : Jessie C. Mejias
Download or read book Leaving Home--Finding Home written by Jessie C. Mejias and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaving Home—Finding Home: My Journey from Shame to Sonship through Journaling is the first book of its kind, showing how God Himself brought inner healing by speaking into one woman’s life. In it, author Jessie Mejias shares how God counsels and heals her through journaling. The central theme of Leaving Home—Finding Home is healing through intimacy with God—an intimacy that develops as she writes out her conversations with Him. The author devotes several chapters to her background and childhood, but the heart of the book is Jessie’s actual journal. About her decision to share her journal verbatim, she says: "When the Lord first instructed me to write this book, my natural instinct was to transform the ramblings of my mind and heart into a nice, neat package that the reader could easily follow. However, as I prayed about His instructions, I felt very strongly that He wanted me to demonstrate how I received my healing through journaling itself." Jessie Mejias grew up in what she would have described as an “Ozzie and Harriet” kind of home—loving parents, close siblings, good schools, and a religion that dictated solid values. What she did not know was that beneath the surface lay a shaky foundation of dysfunctional family rules and generational patterns. As a young adult, Jessie watched her neat world crumble when two of her siblings succumbed to mental illness while the family stood by helplessly. Subsequently, her family scattered and she unwittingly married an abusive, alcoholic man. Her disastrous marriage precipitated her decision to give her life to Christ. But despite her newfound faith, at age 27 she found herself a single mother of two young sons. In the ensuing years, Jessie sought and found healing and growth through studying the Bible and receiving Christian counseling. Miraculously, she and her husband were remarried after seven years of separation and divorce. She became involved in teaching and leading Bible studies within her local church and was confident that she was already experiencing the abundant life that God promised to His children. However, when she decided to return to school to earn a degree in Christian counseling, God began to show her that she was still suffering from the traumas of her childhood, and that shame was an integral part of her life that He wanted to remove. This revelation launched her into an unprecedented time of accelerated healing that was to be the inspiration for this book. Leaving Home—Finding Home chronicles that journey from shame to sonship through one-on-one dialogue with God. Shame is a universal problem that is sometimes hard to pinpoint. We describe ourselves as embarrassed, shy, fearful, or hesitant, but we never actually understand that the source of these emotions is shame. Shame is a terrible feeling that we are a mistake; that somehow we were never supposed to exist. The author found that this feeling of shame was so deeply hidden in her heart that it was not until God began to unwrap her from her emotional chains that she could see that this was the true source of her poor self image. Jessie vividly describes her feelings of shame: "It was as if all my life I had been living in a slum that I would leave from time to time to go the nice clean neighborhood down the block—at first for short times, then for longer and longer periods of time—but inevitably I would end up at some point back in this dump. The sight of it would make me sick, but I did not know how to leave it completely behind." God Himself initiated this unique approach to inner healing as He took Jessie back to her childhood home and school and walked with her through each traumatic event of her young life, reaching deep into her heart to show her what was hidden there.
