Here is a family who has moved from one state to another due to a transfer of her father job. This young lady finds herself, along with a friend of hers, being bullied by a group of girls who have taken over everything at the school and other places. She told no one that this was going on, but she knew that this was wrong and it just couldnaEUR(tm)t keep going on. In other words, she knew that she had to do and she had to do something quick. Carla realized that this was a big thing that was going on, and she had a problem with it. Every day, you turn on the TV, the radio, read the newspaper, and social media is posting picture after picture of innocent souls of lives being taken. Being in a situation like this makes so many feel as though the walls are closing in on them, and they even feel that there is no way out for them. So many are afraid, scared, and threatened, and have no one to talk to, and they feel if they tell someone, they will be laughed at or even killed. This young lady said that enough was enough and she began to step out on a mission to put a stop to bullying. She was afraid of being broken, but she knew if she didnaEUR(tm)t stop it, her crayon would be broken. Crayons are people of color, and we all deserve to live our lives in a positive way. This is suicide, and many donaEUR(tm)t return from it, and those that do have a story to tell. Parents, talk to your children and get involved in the things that they are doing. Know who your childrenaEUR(tm)s friends are, and know who they hang around. Visit their school and see what they are doing and who they are talking to. Bullying is real. Bullying is abuse. ItaEUR(tm)s intimidating, itaEUR(tm)s humiliating, itaEUR(tm)s uncomfortable, and itaEUR(tm)s a behavior that can lead to injuries and even death. If you know of someone that is being bullied, do not keep it to yourself. Please tell someone. Run as fast as you can until you get help. Please help your child to live.In memory of Jimmy Alston, Sr.

Book excerpt: The National Book Award-winning novel—and contemporary classic—that launched the brilliant career of Gloria Naylor, now with a foreword by Tayari Jones “[A] shrewd and lyrical portrayal of many of the realities of black life . . . Naylor bravely risks sentimentality and melodrama to write her compassion and outrage large, and she pulls it off triumphantly.” —The New York Times Book Review “Brims with inventiveness—and relevance.” —NPR's Fresh Air In her heralded first novel, Gloria Naylor weaves together the stories of seven women living in Brewster Place, a bleak-inner city sanctuary, creating a powerful, moving portrait of the strengths, struggles, and hopes of black women in America. Vulnerable and resilient, openhanded and openhearted, these women forge their lives in a place that in turn threatens and protects—a common prison and a shared home. Naylor renders both loving and painful human experiences with simple eloquence and uncommon intuition in this touching and unforgettable read.
