Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it to confess the Christian faith, and what is the status of formal confessions of faith? How far does the context inform the content of the confession? These questions are addressed in Part One, with reference to the Reformed tradition in general, and to its English and Welsh Dissenting strand in particular. In an adverse political context the Dissenters' plea for toleration under the law was eventually granted. The question of tolerance remains alive in our very different context, andin addition we face the challenge of confessing and commending the faith in an intellectual environment in which many question Christianity's relevance and rebut traditional defences of it. In Part Two it is recognised that Christian confessing is an ecclesial, not simply an individual, calling, and that the one confessing church catholic is visibly divided over doctrine and practice. Suggestions for ameliorating this situation are offered, though the final resolution may be a matter for theeschaton. Until then Christians are called to witness faithfully and to live hopefully as citizens of heaven. In an epilogue the challenges and pitfalls of systematic theology as a discipline involving both confession and commendation are explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcendentalism isn’t just a phase in Unitarian Universalist history, it is an on-going source of inspiration for Unitarian Universalists today. Drawing upon ancient wisdom and modern knowledge, Transcendentalist spirituality is at once timeless and timely. The Transcendentalists sought to cultivate the soul through such practices as walks in nature, contemplation, solitude, reading, simple living, religious cosmopolitanism, and action from principle. Unitarian Universalists today will find these practices congenial to their own spiritual growth. The Transcendentalists show us that by concerted effort we can become receptive to insights that will elevate our spirit and motivate us in our efforts to make society more just and to protect the natural world.

For this reason, this book is titled "Sermons for Those Who Have Become Our Coworkers." The author earnestly desires to share fellowship with coworkers within the faith, those who believe wholeheartedly in the righteousness of Christ, excluding personal interests. He does really desire this because he has met them by faith in the Lord's righteousness and they are also preaching it now. The New Life Mission https://www.bjnewlife.org

Book excerpt: So far as I am aware, this is the first attempt on the part of a Catholic to render St. Bernard’s famous Discourses on the Canticle of Canticles available for English readers. It is passing strange that it should be so; passing strange that the most important work, perhaps, of him who has been called by excellence the Doctor of Love and the Prince of Mystics, should be so neglected. But the Sermons on the Canticle are not singular in this respect. The same neglect has been extended to practically all the writings of the Melliduous Doctor, with great loss to spirituality. Book excerpt: "Lessons Learned in Obscurity" is a journey of one church and the pastor who learned the hard way how to develop a unique and healthy fellowship in today's culture. It is a candid look at the things that worked and those that failed. It will be a handy guide to anyone who is more concerned with being a part of a Christian environment that is more relevant than religious. This book should be required reading for those who are not afraid of "coloring outside the lines" and want to be more effective in reaching a world that is increasingly less interested in traditional church. Ken Duggan is senior pastor of Dallas Bay Baptist Church in Hixson, Tennessee. While leading the church since 1990 the fellowship has grown from the original 8 members to nearly 2,300 today. Ken, and his wife Marilyn, are natives of Tennessee and were approved as church planters for the Southern Baptist Convention. Ken has a bachelors' degree in political science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and spent several years in a secular career before entering seminary and earning his Doctorate of Theology. He is also the writer of "Out of the Box" a weekly web log which looks at life from a creative Christian's perspective at www.kenduggan.net.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly esteemed Catholic convert, writer and apologist Ronald Knox, a master of the English language, was well regarded for his gifts both of writing and preaching. This volume combines both skills as it is a collection of his homilies on all the important themes of the spiritual and moral life, and on his favorite saints, men and women of history who were "inflamed with the love of Christ". In his always descriptive, profound and witty style, Knox covers a very wide variety of pastoral themes for Christian living and growth in spiritual perfection. Themes such as "The Fatherhood of God", "The Sermon on the Mount", "The Gifts of God", "The Triumph of Suffering", "The Divine Sacrifice", and dozens more. In his "occasional" sermons on saints and Christian heroes, he shows how these heroes of history struggled with many of the same spiritual battles that modern believers encounter daily, and overcame them with faith, courage, character and virtue. These are the shining witnesses of the truth and charity we all seek to emulate.
