Book excerpt: A beautiful commemorative edition of Dr. Martin Luther King's essay "Letter from Birmingham Jail," part of Dr. King's archives published exclusively by HarperCollins. With an afterword by Reginald Dwayne Betts On April 16, 1923, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., responded to an open letter written and published by eight white clergyman admonishing the civil rights demonstrations happening in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. King drafted his seminal response on scraps of paper smuggled into jail. King criticizes his detractors for caring more about order than justice, defends nonviolent protests, and argues for the moral responsibility to obey just laws while disobeying unjust ones. "Letter from Birmingham Jail" proclaims a message - confronting any injustice is an acceptable and righteous reason for civil disobedience. This beautifully designed edition presents Dr. King's speech in its entirety, paying tribute to this extraordinary leader and his immeasurable contribution, and inspiring a new generation of activists dedicated to carrying on the fight for justice and equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 was a year of financial crises and ecological disasters, of endings and forebodings. The world did not end on December 21st as the Mayan calendar predicted, but became the stage for new beginnings, utopian communities, protest groups and solidarity movements. The essays in this book form an intertextual space for negotiating meaningful facts and fictions with an aim to understanding the present. Discussions focus on utopia and dystopia from literature and film, not only within the framework of science fiction but also critical theory, gender politics and social sciences. The authors of these essays are international academics whose interest lies in utopian studies and who attended the 13th International Conference of Utopian Studies, “The Shape of Things to Come”, held in Tarragona, Spain, in 2012.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When was the last time you or your friend looked at a spider or an ant, and learned principles that you can apply to your Christian life? Or even read it in another Christian book? Here, Ron as a former park ranger shares his experience of what God has shown him over the years when exploring nature. Did you know when you see an object like a cigarette butt, piece of paper, or twig on a web, the spider is telling God’s saint’s aspects on Christian living from Proverbs chap. 30? Just constructing the web, its perseverance, stewardship, and adjustability will tell God’s saints how to live the Christian life. Like in Ron’s other books, Balance (Volume 2) and the children’s book Charlie the Spider and Friends, God uses the most “unlikely” to unveil his principles of walking with him as his saints. Other gems Ron shares for Christian life’s principles is about “the garden,” the seed, learning from darkness, God’s vitamins, and many other fantastic wisdom and understanding emeralds in short bullet points. Whether in quotes, jokes, or commentaries, Ron does not sugarcoat anything so that the reader can get the truth about God. This is a must book for the sinner, the saint, and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story about a shipwreck discovery, exciting explorations, broken alliances, and returning a lost piece of Alaskan history. Since its sinking in 1860 while transporting a valuable cargo of ice, the Kad’yak ship had remained submerged underwater and faded in Alaska’s memory, covered by the legend of an experienced but perhaps rusty sailor and a broken promise to a saint. At the time the ship had been under command of the well-recognized Captain Illarion Arkhimandritov, who had sailed in Alaskan waters for years. It seemed a simple task when he was asked to placate superstitions and honor the late Father Herman, or Saint Herman, on his next visit to Kodiak Island. But Arkhimandritov failed to keep his promise, and shortly thereafter the Kad’yak met its demise in the very waters the captain should have been most familiar with—leaving just the mast above the water in the shape of the cross, right in front of the saint’s grave. Presumed gone or else destroyed, it wasn’t until 143 years later that the Kad’yak was found. In this riveting memoir, scientist Bradley Stevens tells all about the incredible discovery and recovery of the ship—deciphering the sea captain’s muddled journal, digging through libraries and other scientists’ notes, boating over and around the wreck site in circles. Through careful documentation, interviews, underwater photography, and historical research, Stevens recounts the process of finding the Kad’yak, as well as the tumultuous aftermath of bringing the legendary ship’s story to the public—from the formed collaborations to torn partnerships to the legal battles. An important part of Alaska’s history told from Stevens’s modern-day sea expedition, The Ship, the Saint, and the Sailor reveals one of the oldest known shipwreck sites in Alaska discovered and its continuing story today.

That event will haunt their lives for more than thirty years. Wes and Dirk, both born in August 1945, were like many in their generation affected by the radiocaesium from the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan that month. The bombs’ radioactive contamination turned them and hundreds of thousands of others into the idealist activists of the 1960s and 1970s who fought for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. Dirk, who tells the story of their lives, takes the reader on a decades-long, coast-to-coast trip, through protests, riots, and strikes. He and Wes become truckdrivers and help to organize a rebellion in the Teamsters, dealing with trucking company bosses, corrupt union officials, the FBI, and the Mafia. We learn of their love affairs, their marriages, and their infidelities. The country changes, the old movements die, age, yet the fight still goes on. What, Dirk asks, has been the meaning of it all?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing influence of Russia on the Western far right has been much discussed in the media recently. This book is the first detailed inquiry into what has been a neglected but critically important trend: the growing links between Russian actors and Western far right activists, publicists, ideologues, and politicians. The author uses a range of sources including interviews, video footage, leaked communications, official statements and press coverage in order to discuss both historical and contemporary Russia in terms of its relationship with the Western far right. Initial contacts between Russian political actors and Western far right activists were established in the early 1990s, but these contacts were low profile. As Moscow has become more anti-Western, these contacts have become more intense and have operated at a higher level. The book shows that the Russian establishment was first interested in using the Western far right to legitimise Moscow’s politics and actions both domestically and internationally, but more recently Moscow has begun to support particular far right political forces to gain leverage on European politics and undermine the liberal-democratic consensus in the West. Contributing to ongoing scholarly debates about Russia’s role in the world, its strategies aimed at securing legitimation of Putin’s regime both internationally and domestically, modern information warfare and propaganda, far right politics and activism in the West, this book draws on theories and methods from history, political science, area studies, and media studies and will be of interest to students, scholars, activists and practitioners in these areas.
