Book excerpt: Over the past five years, Los Angeles based photographer, Sam Klegerman, began navigating the eerie world of grief while caring for his mother with early-onset Alzheimer's. Conveying this disconnection, Klegerman's photographic series Yes No Thank You Goodbye exists as a window into the quiet world of separation and lost time. Working collaboratively with his parents to document the effects of his mother's battle, Klegerman gives a sentimental approach into the world of coexisting with lost shadows.
Download or read book Me written by Katharine Hepburn and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES Notable Book of the Year “In her book about her life, Miss Hepburn insists that that woman in the movies was not her at all. ‘I’m not going to hide behind you anymore,’ she says. ‘Who are you anyway? You're not me.’ Sure she is. The woman in the book is cocky, fearless, smart, capable, and human, on screen and off.”—Anna Quindlen, The New York Times Admired and beloved by movie audiences for more than sixty years, four-time Academy Award winner Katharine Hepburn is an American classic and an extraordinary, enduring presence on the international cultural scene. Yet her private life has been obscured by mystery. Now Miss Hepburn breaks her long-kept silence in this absorbing and provocative memoir. With characteristic gusto and candor, Katharine Hepburn reflects on the events, people, and places that have shaped her life—her childhood and family, her early days in New York, and her experiences with political activism. She talks about the ups and downs of her career, her long friendship with Spencer Tracy, and of course, her close collaborations with several of the leading actors, directors, and producers of the past half century. Me is an unforgettable portrait of Katharine Hepburn as we have not seen her before. “It is the understanding heart revealed just before the final curtain that makes us fall in love with Katharine Hepburn.”—The New York Times Book Review NOTE: This edition does not include photographs.

Book Synopsis A Tale from the Hills by : Terry Hayden
Download or read book A Tale from the Hills written by Terry Hayden and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a mountainous region of Southwestern Virginia where poverty and hardship were an everyday part of life, there lived a family with the last name of Hill. The Hill children grew up without the benefit of a mother, but under the very watchful eyes of a humble but somewhat roguish father. In spite of many hardships and almost impossible living conditions, most of the children grew up to be proud and respectable citizens of Washington County. That is all except one, and his name was William. William started life under the close scrutiny and support of his loving sister Alice, but after her death in a tragic accident, his life was changed forever. He became tortured by dreams of death and ghostly images which ultimately led to his running away from home at the tender age of twelve. Thus began a long and even more tragic journey of paranoia and mystery that ended when he was twenty-five. William's journey took him from rural Virginia, through the Carolinas and further South, where he left murder and mayhem as his calling card. World War II was his only means of escape from capture for his hideous crimes, but he ultimately met his well deserved end at the hands of a nearly helpless old woman. He changed many lives and families forever but in the end he received his just rewards.

Download or read book J R written by William Gaddis and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Award-winning satire about the unchecked power of American capitalism, written more than three decades before the 2008 financial crisis. At the center of J R is J R Vansant, a very average sixth grader from Long Island with torn sneakers, a runny nose, and a juvenile fascination with junk-mail get-rich-quick offers. Responding to one, he sees a small return; soon, he is running a paper empire out of a phone booth in the school hallway. Everyone from the school staff to the municipal government to the squabbling heirs of a player-piano company to the titans of Wall Street and the politicians in Washington will be caught up in the endlessly ballooning bubble of the J R Family of Companies. First published in 1975 and winner of the National Book Award in 1976, J R is an appallingly funny and all-too-prophetic depiction of America’s romance with finance. It is also a book about suburban development and urban decay, divorce proceedings and disputed wills, the crumbling facade of Western civilization and the impossible demands of love and art, with characters ranging from the earnest young composer Edward Bast to the berserk publicist Davidoff. Told almost entirely through dialogue, William Gaddis’s novel is both a literary tour de force and an unsurpassed reckoning with the way we live now.
