These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The White Scalper - A Story of the Texan War: Look inside the book: 'The offering I claim from you at such a moment,' he continued, 'is not exorbitant; is it not just that in the hour of need you should come to the aid of a government under whose protection you have grown rich, and which, although it would have been perfectly justified in doing so, has, up to this day, demanded nothing from you?' ...Here is the order,' he added, as he took a paper from the table and unfolded it, 'it is peremptory; still, I am ready to grant you five minutes to make up your minds; but when that period has elapsed, I shall be compelled to do my duty, and you are sufficiently well acquainted with me, Señores, to know that I shall do it at all hazards.' About Gustave Aimard, the Author: After one more stay in America (where, according to himself, he was adopted into a Comanche tribe), Aimard returned to Paris in 1847-–the same year his half-sister, Duchess de Choiseul-Pralin, was brutally murdered by her noble husband. ...During his stay in Rio de Janeiro he had contact with Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil as is apparent from Aimard’s January, 11, 1880 letter to Pedro II which letter he signed with Gustave Aimard.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Scalper: A Story of the Texan War These engravings will necessarily enhance the pleasure of the reader; as the most careful attention has been paid to correct ness of costume and scenery, and a perfect idea can be at once formed from them Of the peculiarities Of the country in which the scene is laid. In all Indian novels that have hitherto been published with illustrations, this important point has been neglected; but the purchasers Of the Illustrated Edition Of gustave aimard's works may feel assured that whatever is Offered them in the way Of elucidating the text is strictly true to Nature. When it is stated, for instance, that the Indian dresses have been Obtained from catlin's elaborate work, and the dis tinctive costumes Of each tribe faithfully adhered to, the Pub lishers trust this will prove a sufficient guarantee that no idle boast is intended. At the same time, artistic value has not been neglected. The engraving has been intrusted to Mr. Edmund evans, who has surpassed all his former efforts in the elabora tion Of these, the most perfect specimens which have yet issued from his studio. Book excerpt: Gustave Aimard (13 September 1818 - 20 June 1883) was the author of numerous books about Latin America and the American frontier. Aimard was born Olivier Aimard in Paris. As he once said, he was the son of two people who were married, "but not to each other". His father, François Sébastiani de la Porta (1775-1851) was a general in Napoleon's army and one of the ambassadors of the Louis Philippe government. Sébastiani was married to the Duchess de Coigny. In 1806 the couple produced a daughter: Alatrice-Rosalba Fanny. Shortly after her birth the mother died. Fanny was raised by her grandmother, the Duchess de Coigny. According to the New York Times of July 9, 1883, Aimard's mother was Mme. de Faudoas, married to Anne Jean Marie René de Savary, Duke de Rovigo (1774-1833).

Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Freebooters - A Story of the Texan War: Look inside the book: Fray Antonio was assuredly no better or worse than the other monks whose gown he wore; but, unluckily for him, for some time past fatality appeared to have vented its spite on him, and mixed him up, despite his firm will, in events, not only opposed to his character but to his habits, which led him into a multitude of tribulations each more disagreeable than the other, and which were beginning to make him consider that life extremely bitter, which he had hitherto found so pleasant. ...This final reflection, which was incontestably true, restored a fresh ardour to the monk, who resolved to make a new and supreme attempt But this time he wished to take all his precautions; consequently, he began collecting the dead wood round him and piling it at the foot of the tree, so as to form a scaffolding high enough for him to reach, without any great difficulty, a branch sufficiently low for him, while careful to remain awake, to hope to spend the night without fear of being devoured—an alternative for which the worthy monk did not feel the slightest inclination. ...The gentleness the Apaches displayed towards him on the previous night was so extraordinary, and opposed to their usual habit of treating white men, their inveterate foes, that the monk, despite the coolness which formed the basis of his character, understood that the strange conduct of the men into whose power he had fallen must result from very powerful motives, and that, in spite of the pretended friendship they showed him, he would do well to keep on his guard, in order to be able to make head against the storm, from whatever quarter it might come. About Gustave Aimard, the Author: After one more stay in America (where, according to himself, he was adopted into a Comanche tribe), Aimard returned to Paris in 1847-–the same year his half-sister, Duchess de Choiseul-Pralin, was brutally murdered by her noble husband. ...During his stay in Rio de Janeiro he had contact with Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil as is apparent from Aimard’s January, 11, 1880 letter to Pedro II which letter he signed with Gustave Aimard.

Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of the Mexican-American War, Gustave Aimard's thrilling adventure tale The White Scalper is yet another of the author's novels whose central protagonist is something of a cultural misfit, an outsider who has spurned social niceties in favor of what he views as a higher moral calling. Packed with action that transpires on the battlefield and off, this novel will please fans of classic Western yarns.
