Book excerpt: Farm Town to Suburb is a comprehensive history of the Town of Weston, with particular emphasis on the years 1830-2020. Extensively documented and richly illustrated, the book chronicles the economic, social and political evolution of the town from rural agricultural community to modern Boston suburb. The first nine chapters are organized by time period and the remaining twenty-one focus on geographical areas. With Farm Town to Suburb as a guide, readers of today can connect with the past and enrich the present by looking at the development of their own streets and neighborhoods. Settled by Puritan farmers and located along the important Boston Post Road, Weston enjoyed a brief commercial heyday before railroads replaced stagecoaches in the 1840s. While lacking water power for large mills, the town did have one major industry, the prestigious Hook & Hastings Company, makers of some of the nation's finest church and concert hall organs. After the Civil War, city dwellers who fancied the farm landscape found the town close enough to Boston for convenient commuting to country estates. At the turn of the century, Weston was proclaimed "The Lenox of the East." Farm Town to Suburb tells the story of estate owners, their mansions and gardens, and a way of life now gone by. Corn fields and dairy cows were a common sight until after World War II, when the last farms were sold for development. As Weston's population burgeoned, leaders struggled to keep up with growth and at the same time preserve rural character through rezoning and the purchase of conservation land. Farm Town to Suburb includes over 1000 photographs, maps and illustrations from both public and private collections, most of which have never before been published. It offers a fascinating perspective on the town and will appeal to anyone with an interest in the history not only of Weston but also of the greater Boston area.

Book excerpt: The nine ethnomusicologists who contributed to this volume present a diverse range of views, approaches, and methodologies that address indigenous peoples, immigrants, and marginalized communities. Discussing participatory action research, social justice, empowerment, and critical race theory in relation to ethnomusicology, De-Colonization, Heritage, and Advocacy is the second of three paperback volumes derived from the original Oxford Handbook of Applied Ethnomusicology. The Handbook can be understood as an applied ethnomusicology project: as a medium of getting to know the thoughts and experiences of global ethnomusicologists, of enriching general knowledge and understanding about ethnomusicologies and applied ethnomusicologies in various parts of the world, and of inspiring readers to put the accumulated knowledge, understanding, and skills into good use for the betterment of our world.

By exploring national and regional specificities within the broader context of internationalization, this volume enriches the conceptual, methodological and empirical scope of heritage studies through a series of fascinating case studies. Its transnational approach highlights the socialist world's diverse interpretations of heritage and the ways in which they have shaped the trajectories of present-day preservation practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the Christian calendar? Would you know how to make an Advent wreath? When is Candlemas? Who was the original St Nicholas? Why do we eat Hot Cross Buns? These and many other questions are all answered in A Year Book of Seasons and Celebrations - a guidebook to the traditional Christian year, which is also a cookery book, a mine of interesting information, and a source of amusement, inspiration, and faith. Living the calendar, celebrating its feasts, enjoying the ways in which they mesh with the natural seasons of the year, gives a new appreciation of the gift of life itself and our relationship both with the natural world and with the customs and culture that we have inherited. At a time when many old and valued traditions are in danger of being neglected, and when families are seeking ways of giving real meaning to celebrations such as Christmas and Easter, this is a practical handbook which provides both the background and the practical information for enjoying the seasons of the year. Written to celebrate our Christian heritage, it can be enjoyed by everyone. Joanna Bogle is a Catholic writer, broadcaster, and journalist. She is the author of several historical biographies, and also, under her pen-name 'Julia Blythe', a children's book. Her earlier Book of Feasts and Seasons, published in 1986, became a popular classic - this new book, with fresh ideas and further information, is sure to follow. She has made both a television and a radio series showing ways of celebrating the Christian year with things to make, do, eat and sing. Joanna Bogle is married to barrister Jamie Bogle, who is also an author, and they live in London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of 'heritage cinema' is now firmly established as an influential - as well as much-debated and contested - critical framework for the discussion of period or historical representation in film, most prominently with reference to British heritage and 'post-heritage' film successes since the 1980s, but also to comparable examples from Europe, North America and beyond. These successes have ranged from Merchant Ivory's A Room with a View, Maurice, Howards End and The Remains of the Day, via Jane Austen adaptations such as Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility to post-heritage adaptations such as Sally Potter's Orlando. Yet the very idea of the heritage film has rested on untested assumptions about its audiences. This book breaks significant new ground in the scholarship on contemporary period films, and makes a distinctive new contribution to the growing field of film-audience studies, by presenting the first empirically based study of the audiences for quality period films. Monk engages directly with two highly contrasting sections of these audiences, surveyed in the UK in the late 1990s, to explore their identities, their wider patterns of film taste, and above all their attitudes and pleasures - in relation to the period films they enjoy, and on issues central to debates around the heritage film, literary adaptation and cultural value - with illuminating and unpredicted results.
