Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yearbook, 1921, Vol. 31 To this holy place to which the hearts of all Americans are drawn we have come as representatives of the Central Conference of American Rabbis to lay this wreath, symbol of our reverence and love, upon the tomb where rest the earthly remains that housed the spirit of him whom God did choose that he might bring forth liberty and the right unto the nations. We thank the God of Israel, Ruler of peoples and Father of mankind, for the privi lege of visiting the shrine of the nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Year-Book for the Year 1921 Somewhat contrary to the usual procedure this Introduction to the 1921 Edition Of the literary year book has been written when all the work was completed. Handicapped somewhat by the lack of time for very careful corrections there are a number of clerical and printers' errors in the Book, which a careful reader will easily distinguish and read correctly. They are unfortunately inseparable from rush-work, and acknowledgments must be given to the printers and binders for their very helpful assistance. An endeavour has been made in the present volume to shed the halo of distinguished letters and to produce a book which will be really helpful in the common task Of the work-a-day world of the writer. One's first attempt at such a task can scarcely be successful, but if in a small measure the present edition is of some service to its users the Editor will feel repaid for the work involved. It has been a labour which has given him extreme pleasure, but it is his wish to be of still further service right throughout 1921 to the readers Of the Book, and any questions or letters addressed to him will always have careful attention. In the interests Of the authors themselves, particular attention is directed to the section on Literary Property (p. And the importance of Observing the suggestions laid down there cannot be over-emphasised. In the main the reader will find that there is more matter of use to him in this than in previous volumes, and with an earlier preparation Of the 1922 edition than was possible with this one, it is hoped that the scope of the Book will be considerably extended. Suggestions will receive careful consideration. It is gratifying to note in to-day's New Year's Honours the names of Mr. T. J. Bennett, m.p., for many years Editor Of the Times of India, Mr. William Davies, Editor of the Western Mail, Mr. Dawson Williams, M.D., Editor of the British Medical Journal, Mr. Samuel Squire Spriggs, M.D., Editor of the Lancet, and Mr. Wm. Denham, author and writer. One would like to see an increasing recognition by the State of men of letters and journalists, with a decreasing reward for mere political ends. The best achievements of humanity are fostered more by real literature and clean press work than by politics, and until the happy time of recognition arrives the lot of the writer and artist will remain difficult. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethanian, 1921 The struggle was a long and hard one. Mr. Cochran gave when he had to borrow to give. Each year Bethany seemed to come closer to his heart and each year it seemed that new difficulties beset the Old institution. In the closing years of the last century it seemed that Bethany was doomed. She was unable to pay her professors, her debts continued to increase and her friends lost heart and many of them gave up. Not so Mr. Cochran. Each new difficulty seemed to make him more determined that Bethany should live. He stubbornly refused to allow them to close her doors. She was going to live, and he, Mark Mordecai Cochran was going to see to it that she did live. Finally he Obtained the right man to manage the affairs of the college. The first years of this century seemed to be little more than a continuation Of the Old struggle. To those who knew, however, it was evident that improvement was coming. The student body was growing, her endowment was increasing and at the end of the first decade Of nineteen hundred Bethany was in good condition. She was tided over the period of danger and to the unquenchable courage of M. M. Cochran belongs the credit. Mr. Cochran was not satisfied with this, however, He had faith in Bethany's ideals and tenets. Bethany should grow and spread them. He continued to add to the endowment; he built new equipment and improved living conditions; he did everything in his power to bring Bethany to the fore. The Old college thrived and prospered and now she stands where few of like institutions can rival her. We, who are permitted to live in the light of her learning today, can little realize, perhaps the great travail through which She has passed, but nevertheless we experience a feeling of sincere gratefulness toward this man who has made it possible that she should live.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chanticleer for 1921 It is indeed filling nowadays that some adequate record be made of the widening interest in student activities at Trinity College. Such has been our assigned task, and to this end we have labored. We have no doubtfallen far short of our mar/q, and it is with fear and trembling that we submit this, the work of our hands. It is our hope, however, that at some time in future. Years, you, gentle reader, may have an occasion to open this book again, and that by its help you may be able to slip away from the toils and cares and worries of your business for an hour or so and to drift back to those pleasant and precious days when you were a student; and as you turn its pages, may you once more visualize old familiar sights of ours, may you hear again the clarion summons of the chapel bell, may you sit again behind your mom study table in Epworth Hall, and may you loo/e once more into smiling, carefree faces that have grown dim with the passing years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Souvenir, 1921, Vol. 1 Not only has the School grown larger so far as numbers are concerned, but it has made long strides forward in other ways. In 1918 this school was but a three - year high school, not coming up to the State standard. Last ses sion the course was raised to a standard four-year course and the School was listed upon the State accredited column This year we attained a still higher standard and were notified last November that we had been accredited on the list of the Southern Accredited Schools of the Association of Southern Col leges. This is an enviable position, and one that we wish to maintain. But our physical equipment must increase also if we hope to stay in the Southern Acc'redited list.
