Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ye Kingdome of Accawmacke or the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century The author of this volume, which purports to be a History of the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century, submits the completed work to the public. He can only say that he has not failed where others have succeeded, for the little peninsula has had no former historian. The task was undertaken in the hope that the very deficiencies in his own narrative might urge a more competent pen to action and inspire a better history of this long-neglected region of the Old Dominion. If this volume accomplish no other result than to impress a more able writer with the valuable material for such a work, if it call attention to events of all-absorbing interest as yet inadequately described, and bring to light from among the musty archives of Accomac and Northampton but a few facts bearing upon the history of our State, then will the author rest content in the feeling that while he has not succeeded as a historian, yet he has induced a more accurate portraiture of a country and a people. It is an astonishing fact that such historic documents as the Pledge to the Commonwealth, The Northampton Protest, The Northampton Grievances, Bacon's Appeal to Accomac, and the Accomac Memorial, addressed to Berkeley after the Rebellion of 1676, should all have been utterly neglected by the historians of Virginia, for these documents are not simply matters of local interest, but have a direct bearing upon the general history of the State. Indeed, the texts of these instruments have never before been collected in a single volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Formation of a Society on Virginia's Eastern Shore, 1615-1655 by : James R. Perry
Download or read book The Formation of a Society on Virginia's Eastern Shore, 1615-1655 written by James R. Perry and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissolution of the ill-starred Virginia Company in 1624 left Virginia -- now England's first royal colony -- without a formal raison d'etre. Most historians have suggested that the nascent local societies were anarchic, under the thrall of violent and unscrupulous men. James Perry asserts the opposite: The Formation of a Society on Virginia's Eastern Shore, 1615-1655 depicts emergent social cohesion. In a model of network analysis, Perry mines county court records to trace landholders through four decades -- their land, families, neighborhoods, local and offshore economic relations, and institutions. A wealth of statistics documents their development from rudimentary beginnings to a more highly articulated society capable of resolving conflict and working toward communal good. Perry's methodology will serve as a model for analyzing other new settlements, particularly those lacking the close-knit religious bonds and contractual foundations of New England towns. His conclusions will reshape notions of the development of early Chesapeake society. Originally published in 1990. Book excerpt: Today, Wisconsin represents one of our "Germanest" states, with no less that 55 percent of its population claiming German origin. J. H. A. Lacher's treatise on the German element of Wisconsin, originally published in 1925, is still the standard introduction to its subject. The first section of the work focuses on Wisconsin's rich German religious establishment: Catholics, Lutherans, German Evangelical Synod, German Reformed, Evangelical Association, Liberals and Jews. Section Two looks at representative German-Americans and their vocations in Wisconsin. The third section of the book homes in upon Wisconsin German politics, the German press, sports, thrift, men of letters, German place names and patronymics, and the impact of World War I. Genealogists will find references to some 750 German surnames at the back of this volume.
Book Synopsis Dominion and Civility by : Michael Leroy Oberg
Download or read book Dominion and Civility written by Michael Leroy Oberg and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was the relationship between English settlers and Native Americans in the New World destined to turn tragic? This book investigates how the newcomers interacted with Algonquian groups in the Chesapeake Bay area and New England, describing the role that original Americans occupied in England's empire during the critical first century of contact. Michael Leroy Oberg considers the history of Anglo-Indian relations in transatlantic context while viewing the frontier as a zone where neither party had the upper hand. He tells how the English pursued three sets of policies in America—securing profit for their sponsors, making lands safe from both European and native enemies, and "civilizing" the Indians—and explains why the British settlers found it impossible to achieve all of these goals. Oberg places the history of Anglo-Indian relations in the early Chesapeake and New England in a broad transatlantic context while drawing parallels with subsequent efforts by England as well as its imperial rivals—the French, Dutch, and Spanish—to plant colonies in America. Dominion and Civility promises to broaden our understanding of the exchange between Europeans and Indians and makes an important contribution to the emerging history of the English Atlantic world.

Book Synopsis Adapting to a New World by : James Horn
Download or read book Adapting to a New World written by James Horn and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often compared unfavorably with colonial New England, the early Chesapeake has been portrayed as irreligious, unstable, and violent. In this important new study, James Horn challenges this conventional view and looks across the Atlantic to assess the enduring influence of English attitudes, values, and behavior on the social and cultural evolution of the early Chesapeake. Using detailed local and regional studies to compare everyday life in English provincial society and the emergent societies of the Chesapeake Bay, Horn provides a richly textured picture of the immigrants' Old World backgrounds and their adjustment to life in America. Until the end of the seventeenth century, most settlers in Virginia and Maryland were born and raised in England, a factor of enormous consequence for social development in the two colonies. By stressing the vital social and cultural connections between England and the Chesapeake during this period, Horn places the development of early America in the context of a vibrant Anglophone transatlantic world and suggests a fundamental reinterpretation of New World society.
