Book Synopsis The Singer-Songwriter in Europe by : Isabelle Marc
Download or read book The Singer-Songwriter in Europe written by Isabelle Marc and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Singer-Songwriter in Europe is the first book to explore and compare the multifaceted discourses and practices of this figure within and across linguistic spaces in Europe and in dialogue with spaces beyond continental borders. The concept of the singer-songwriter is significant and much-debated for a variety of reasons. Many such musicians possess large and zealous followings, their output often esteemed politically and usually held up as the nearest popular music gets to high art, such facets often yielding sizeable economic benefits. Yet this figure, per se, has been the object of scant critical discussion, with individual practitioners celebrated for their isolated achievements instead. In response to this lack of critical knowledge, this volume identifies and interrogates the musical, linguistic, social and ideological elements that configure the singer-songwriter and its various equivalents in Europe, such as the French auteur-compositeur-interprète and the Italian cantautore, since the late 1940s. Particular attention is paid to the emergence of this figure in the post-war period, how and why its contours have changed over time and space subsequently, cross-cultural influences, and the transformative agency of this figure as regards party and identity politics in lyrics and music, often by means of individual case studies. The book's polycentric approach endeavours to redress the hitherto Anglophone bias in scholarship on the singer-songwriter in the English-speaking world, drawing on the knowledge of scholars from across Europe and from a variety of academic disciplines, including modern language studies, musicology, sociology, literary studies and history.
Download or read book Sites of Protest written by Stuart Price and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sites of Protest examines the global resurgence of protest movements and the ways in which they use public and private space - both physical and ‘immaterial’ - to secure attention for a wide variety of causes, cultural events and moral campaigns. The book takes its readers inside the mindset, not only of protestors and activists, but also of the state and corporate authorities that attempt to limit the impact of dissent. It also explains how media outlets frame the wide variety of international events and controversies that make up modern protest movements, and examines the myths that surround activism and the Internet. Has the landscape of dissent changed forever, or does the fact that protestors still rely on the symbolism associated with a particular ‘place’, mean that their interventions will remain localised and will fail to create a universal appeal?

Book Synopsis Mediterranean Musicscapes in Contemporary Spain by : Kiko Mora
Download or read book Mediterranean Musicscapes in Contemporary Spain written by Kiko Mora and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the musicscapes that contest, critique, and rethink Mediterraneidad (Mediterraneaness) in Contemporary Spain, and understands it as a fluid and elusive sociological, cultural, and artistic category. The volume argues that since the 1990s we have witnessed a shift in which the mythical image of “Mediterranean harmony” has been superseded by the net: a figure that represents the linking of urban nodes and trans governmental networks, migratory movements, and cultural fluidity. Further, this book assesses how Mediterraneidad became, within the realm of music, the site and sign of a diverse array of social issues such as the formulation of Catalan, Valencian, Andalusian, and Mallorcan national identities, with the 2017 Catalan Independence process taking center stage. Using diverse methodologies-data-driven sociological approaches; ethnographic and anthropological tools; feminist and gender theories-the authors also address the rapidly changing social landscape that started in the 1980s due to global migrations as well as the dismantling of traditional gender dynamics.
Download or read book Líneas written by Tim Ingold and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Alejo Carpentier and the Musical Text by : Katia Chornik
Download or read book Alejo Carpentier and the Musical Text written by Katia Chornik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely known for his novels El reino de este mundo and Los pasos perdidos, the Swiss-born Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier incorporated music in his fiction extensively, for instance in titles, in analogies with musical forms, in scenes depicting performances, recordings and broadcasts, and in characters’ discussions of musical issues. Chornik’s study focuses on Carpentier’s writings from a musicological perspective, bridging intermediality and intertextuality through an examination of music as formative, as form, and as performed. The emphasis lies on the novels Los pasos perdidos, El acoso, Concierto barroco and La consagración de la primavera, and on his unknown essay Los orígenes de la música y la música primitiva, the repository of ideas for Los pasos perdidos, included here for the first time as facsimile and in English translation. Chornik’s study will appeal to scholars and students in literary studies, cultural studies, musicology and ethnomusicology, and to a specifically interdisciplinary readership.
Download or read book Imagen y Palabra written by Eliezer Oyola and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis New Mexican Folk Music/Cancionero del Folklor Nuevomexicano by : Cipriano Frederico Vigil
Download or read book New Mexican Folk Music/Cancionero del Folklor Nuevomexicano written by Cipriano Frederico Vigil and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cipriano Frederico Vigil is the most important performer of traditional Nuevomexicano folk music in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. This bilingual panoramic book presents the songs that are his life’s work, spanning half a century of listening, playing, composing, and singing ritual, social, and dance music. New Mexican Folk Music includes much traditional material that has never been seen before or studied by scholars or students. Renowned as a composer, Vigil works in traditional genres such as the romance, the décima, the cuando, and corrido. Like the Mexican group Los Folkloristas with which he apprenticed in the late 1970s, his goal has been to research and master local styles, to introduce new listeners to traditional music, and to build on tradition by creating new compositions that address contemporary social themes. An audio CD accompanies this comprehensive study on the work and music of Cipriano Frederico Vigil.
