Book excerpt: This volume collects an impressive amount of information about many of the challenging problems pertaining to the exocrine glands, discussed at this Satellite Symposium held at the University of Pennsylvania. This Symposium was one of the 18 highly specialized conferences, the detailed information and probing of which complemented the broader aims of the XXIV International Congress of Physiological Sciences held August 1968 in Washington, D.C. This Symposium attracted eminent physiologists from various countries throughout the world with eight of the seventeen formal papers being delivered by physiologists from abroad. Published with the papers are 122 illustrations, 103 of which have never before been printed; 42 tables, 38 of which have never before been published; and the complete discussion of all papers by 39 investigators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lactation: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume IV, The Mammary Gland/Human Lactation/Milk Synthesis, forms the fourth in a series. When the first three volumes were published in 1974, publication of future volumes was not contemplated. However, the gratifying acceptance by the scientific community and the continuation of rapid advances in lactation, have provided the impetus for the continuation of the series. The present volume is concerned with general aspects of the mammary gland, human lactation, and mechanisms of milk synthesis. The volume is divided into three main parts. Part I covers some aspects of the mammary gland and lactation not discussed in the first three volumes and expands on others. Topics discussed include the development of the mammary apparatus and neuroendocrine control of lactation. Part II is devoted to more specific consideration of human lactation as a whole. It includes studies on breast feeding and the breast cancer process. Part III on milk synthesis deals with the mechanisms of milk synthesis; enzymology and control of lactose biosynthesis; molecular aspects of milk protein biosynthesis; and ion and water transport in the mammary gland.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, the aim of this book was to interest clinical neuroscientists in the application of neurometrics to the evaluation of brain dysfunction in neurological patients. This methodology was hoped to produce substantial improvement in the neurological medical care of the general population at the time. In the previous 15 years, as a result of the development of minicomputers and their application to the quantitative analysis of electrophysiological phenomena, there had been a great expansion of knowledge about the electrical activity of the brain. This activity yielded a great variety of information about brain functions. Neurometrics is a methodology, based on quantitative measurements of the brain electrical activity, for evaluating anatomical integrity, developmental maturation, and the mediation of sensory, perceptual, and cognitive processes. This book focuses on practical clinical applications and the theoretical and experimental formulations on which these are based.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning of this century physiology witnessed the creation of a new concept, the hormonal regulation of the work of the digestive organs. It was found that such essential functions as the flow of pancreatic juice and emptying of bile into the intestine were regulated by two hormones, secretin and cholecystokinin, respectively. Already in 1925 French authors attempted to measure the functional capacity of the exocrine pancreas by means of stimulation with secretin. The use fulness of the secretin test in this connection was definitely established by Scandinavian workers in the 1930's. In spite of the difficulties in obtaining secretin American authors succeeded in keeping the interest in the secretin test alive. The development in the 1950's of counter-current, ion exchange and chromato graphic techniques offered new possibilities in this field. The intestinal hormones were known to be relatively low molecular peptides and these could now be isolated in pure form. Thus secretin was isolated in 1961, and cholecystokinin in 1964. The newly developed methods for peptide analysis likewise soon brought us full information about the primary structure of the peptides. Gastrin, the specific stimulant of the gastric acid secretion, which was discovered in 1905 and acknowledged as a hormone in 1938, was the first of the gastrointestinal hormones for which the structure became known. This was in 1964. Synthesis soon followed. These developments are reviewed in the first chapter of the present volume.

Roy John is considered the pioneer in the field of neurometrics – the science of measuring the underlying organization of the brain’s electrical activity. Volume 1, co-authored by Robert W. Thatcher, and Volume 2 both originally published in 1977, were among the first books this field. Volume 3, written by colleague Thalía Harmony, followed in 1984. The field expanded significantly in the 1990s and thousands of articles have subsequently been published. Available together for the first time these 3 volumes were important foundational works for the fields of quantitative electrophysiology and neurometrics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed of a set of chapters contributed by past and present collaborators of the Nobel laureate Sir Andrew Huxley, this book covers the areas of muscle research to which Huxley made major contributions. The purpose of the book is to discuss the way that muscles work, asking questions at a fundamental level about the molecular basis of muscle tone production and muscle contraction. The majority of the chapters are concerned with muscle physiology and the relation between structure and function. The process of activation of muscles is discussed, along with the mechanism of contraction itself. Although most of the book deals with vertebrate skeletal muscle, several chapters cover cardiac muscle. Also featured are two chapters discussing Sir Andrew's achievements in both nerve and muscle physiology.

Book excerpt: This edited volume records the critical historical developments in thermal physiology and makes them accessible to new and senior thermal biologists and scientists in related fields. Readers will discover how the discipline developed all over the world. Contributions from 14 different countries recollect all prominent discoveries, starting in the 18th century. Like other volumes of the Perspectives in Physiology series, this book reveals the people behind these discoveries. The authors also set the scenes in which the research was conducted in their countries. From geopolitical frameworks to new technologies and extraordinary personalities - this volume shows that scientific progress is influenced by many, often unforeseeable, factors. The history of thermal physiology not only is a story about individual outstanding scientists, but a testament for open collaboration and international comradery.
