Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to the use of X-ray beam techniques to study magnetic properties of materials. It covers both experimental and theoretical issues. The three main topics are dichroism, elastic scattering (both non-resonant and resonant diffraction) and spectroscopy. In thepast decade there has been an expansion of activity in the field, driven by the availability of intense, tuneable and highly polarized X-ray beams from synchrtron facilities. The pace of events is likely to continue with the start of new (3rd generation) facilities, including the EuropeanSynchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, and the Advanced Light Source, Argonne National Laboratory. Book Synopsis Anomalous X-Ray Scattering for Materials Characterization by : Yoshio Waseda
Download or read book Anomalous X-Ray Scattering for Materials Characterization written by Yoshio Waseda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of multi layered thin films with sufficient reliability is a key technology for device fabrication in micro electronics. In the Co/Cu type multi layers, for example, magnetoresistance has been found as large as 80 % at 4. 2 K and 50 % at room temperature. In addition to such gigantic mag netoresistance, these multi layers indicate anti ferromagnetic and ferromag netic oscillation behavior with an increase in the thickness of the layers of the non magnetic component. These interesting properties of the new synthetic flmctional materials are attributed to their periodic and interracial structures at a microscopic level, although the origin of such peculiar features is not fully understood. Information on the surface structure or the number density of atoms in the near surface region may provide better insight. Amorphous alloys, frequently referred to as metallic glasses, are produced by rapid quenching from the melt. The second generation amorphous alloys, called "bulk amorphous alloys", have been discovered in some Pd based and Zr based alloy systems, with a super cooled liquid region at more than 120 K. In these alloy systems, one can obtain a sample thickness of several centime ters. Growing scientific and technological curiosity about the new amorphous alloys has focused on the fundamental factors, such as the atomic scale struc ture, which are responsible for the thermal stability with certain chemical compositions.

Book excerpt: The synchrotron light source is becoming widely available, after its evolution from its infancy in the sixties to the present third generation source with insertion devices. It is timely to examine the impact that synchrotron light has made and will continue to make on chemical research. With this objective in mind, the editor of this invaluable book invited contributions from practitioners who are in the forefront of the research. The book summarizes most of the significant developments in the last decade in chemical and related research using synchrotron light. The utilization of the light as a probe as well as an energy source is emphasized. This book is organized into two parts, in order of increasing photon energy. Part I deals with the applications of low energy photons and covers areas such as gas phase photodissociation reactions and dynamics, soft X-ray fluorescence, IR and photoemission analysis of surfaces, spectroscopy of organic and polymeric materials, catalysts, electronic and magnetic materials, and spectromicroscopy. Part II encompasses applications using soft to hard X-rays, including spectroscopy of surface and thin films, XAFS, diffraction and scattering, and several technological applications, namely the microprobe, photoetching and tribology.
Book Synopsis Spin-orbit Coupling Influenced X-ray Spectroscopies and Resonant X-ray Magneto-optical Properties of Transition Metal Systems by : Ján Minár
Download or read book Spin-orbit Coupling Influenced X-ray Spectroscopies and Resonant X-ray Magneto-optical Properties of Transition Metal Systems written by Ján Minár and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many tools one has in hand in material science, the various electronic spectroscopies are of particular interest. Techniques based on synchrotron radiation, such as spin-resolved photoemission, X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism, resonant X-ray scattering and also X-ray magnetic microscopy have been shown to provide unique tools for the study of the magnetic phenomena and magnetic materials. However, it became apparent that all these new achievements need a strong theoretical support. Ab-initio theoretical investigations presented here adopted a one-electron picture, within the framework of Density functional theory, using the multiple scattering theory to solve the electronic structure problem. Most of the spectroscopies to be dealt with here can be seen as a direct consequence of the presence of a spontaneous magnetisation and relativistic effects, in particular the spin-orbit coupling. To deal with all relativistic effects and magnetism on the same level, the fully relativistic formalism will be used in the following. Thus, one of the goals of this work is to apply the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) band structure method in its relativistic version to a wide range of spectroscopies. Accordingly, all results will be compared with available experimental data as far as possible. Based on these results various aspects connected with experiments will be discussed in detail. In the first chapter the theoretical basis of this work will be introduced. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to the photoemission spectroscopies, i.e. spin-resolved Auger electron spectroscopy, Fano effects in valence band photoem ission and core level photoemission. In a third part we discuss resonant magneto-optical effects in the X-ray regime. Last chapter is dealing with non-collinear spin-structures within multiple scattering theory and its application to studies of photoemission and X-ray absorption is described.
Book Synopsis Neutron Scattering in Earth Sciences by : Hans Rudolf Wenk
Download or read book Neutron Scattering in Earth Sciences written by Hans Rudolf Wenk and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 63 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry provides an introduction for those not yet familiar with neutrons by describing basic features of neutrons and their interaction with matter as well illustrating important applications. The volume is divided into 17 Chapters. The first two chapters introduce properties of neutrons and neutron facilities, setting the stage for applications. Some applications rely on single crystals (Chapter 3) but mostly powders (Chapters 4-5) and bulk polycrystals (Chapters 15-16) are analyzed, at ambient conditions as well as low and high temperature and high pressure (Chapters 7-9). Characterization of magnetic structures remains a core application of neutron scattering (Chapter 6). The analysis of neutron data is not trivial and crystallographic methods have been modified to take account of the complexities, such as the Rietveld technique (Chapter 4) and the pair distribution function (Chapter 11). Information is not only obtained about solids but about liquids, melts and aqueous solutions as well (Chapters 11-13). In fact this field, approached with inelastic scattering (Chapter 10) and small angle scattering (Chapter 13) is opening unprecedented opportunities for earth sciences. Small angle scattering also contributes information about microstructures (Chapter 14). Neutron diffraction has become a favorite method to quantify residual stresses in deformed materials (Chapter 16) as well as preferred orientation patterns (Chapter 15). The volume concludes with a short introduction into neutron tomography and radiography that may well emerge as a principal application of neutron scattering in the future (Chapter 17).
Book Synopsis Synchrotron Light Sources and Free-Electron Lasers by : Eberhard J. Jaeschke
Download or read book Synchrotron Light Sources and Free-Electron Lasers written by Eberhard J. Jaeschke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.
Book Synopsis X-Ray Compton Scattering by : Malcolm Cooper
Download or read book X-Ray Compton Scattering written by Malcolm Cooper and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development of potent x-ray sources at many synchrotron laboratories worldwide, Compton scattering has become a standard tool for studying electron densities in materials. This book provides condensed matter and materials physicists with an authoritative, up-to-date, and very accessible account of the Compton scattering method, leading to a fundamental understanding of the electrical and magnetic properties of solid materials. The spectrum of Compton scattered x-rays is particularly sensitive to this behaviour and thus can be used as a direct probe and to test the predictions of theory. The current generation of synchrotron facilities allows this method to be readily exploited to study the ground state electron density in both elements and in complex compounds. It is important that those working in related fields, as well as the increasing number directly using the Compton method, have a comprehensive assessment of what is now possible and how to achieve it, in addition to a full understanding of its theoretical basis. This monograph is unique and timely, since little of what is described, was practicable a decade ago. The development of synchrotron radiation facilities has ensured that the technique described here will remain a powerful probe of electron charge and spin density for many years to come.
