Book excerpt: Diagnostic radiology plays a vital role in patient management and all clinicians need to be able to recognise the radiological appearances of many medical conditions. Not only are traditional imaging techniques important, but newer techniques such as interventional radiology, computedtomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine and ultrasound are increasingly important in clinical practice and also, the interpretation of radiological images is an integral part of professional examinations for MRCP (part II): there are five compulsory questions based onprinted photographic material, with additional radiographs or other diagnostic images being shown occasionally throughout. This book will cover all modalities in radiology, providing a guide to the principles of plain radiographic film interpretation and an understanding of the roles and limitationsof more complex imaging across general medicine. The material is presented through the discussion of a hundred fully-illustrated cases in question and answer format.

Book excerpt: This popular guide to the examination and interpretation of chest radiographs is an invaluable aid for medical students, junior doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and radiographers. Translated into over a dozen languages, this book has been widely praised for making interpretation of the chest X-ray as simple as possible The chest X-ray is often central to the diagnosis and management of a patient. As a result every doctor requires a thorough understanding of the common radiological problems. This pocketbook describes the range of conditions likely to be encountered on the wards and guides the reader through the diagnostic process based on the appearance of the abnormality shown. Covers the full range of common radiological problems. Includes valuable advice on how to examine an X-ray. Assists the doctor in determining the nature of the abnormality. Points the clinician towards a possible differential diagnosis. A larger page size allows for larger and clearer illustrations. A new chapter on the sick patient covers the patient on ITU and the appearance of lines and tubes. There is extended use of CT imaging with advice on choosing modalities depending on the clinical circumstances. A new section of chest x-ray problems incorporates particularly challenging case histories. The international relevance of the text has been expanded with additional text and images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is directed towards post-graduates who have passed Part I of the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and are preparing for Part II. However, it is hoped that physicians at all stages of their careers will find some parts that interest them. Most of the material has appeared in the Hospital Update series, 'Preparation for MRCP', but this has been modified and expanded; many useful points arising from correspondence relating to the series have been included, and the authors would like to express their thanks to those who have written. It is not intended that this should be used as a work of reference, although there is detailed discussion of some subjects. Only the written part of the examination is dealt with in detail, but the introduction contains hints on tackling the clinical sections which the authors hope the candidates will find valuable. There is, however, no substitute for clinical practice under supervision. The questions in Vll PREFACE the written section of the examination require short answers so that marking may be easy and objective. This book contains questions similar to those that may be encountered in the examination, but the answers have been expanded as a basis for discussion. It is hoped that this will encourage the candidate to read around the subjects covered, and the authors recommend that the questions are used as a basis for group discussion, as answers other than those in the text may be considered.
