Book excerpt: Dusti Griffin- About twenty years ago, writing across the curriculum became a movement throughout education. This movement encouraged writing in all subject areas not just in Language Arts. Since the movement began, more organizations are on board with the idea. In the past ten years, New Mexico has began to raise their standards where more writing has been added to all subject areas including mathematics. Many mathematic teachers are not aware of this change or comfortable implementing this change. In collaboration, our final project was designed to help those teachers out. We created a binder and a CD that has many useful activities that incorporate writing in the mathematics class. The binder and CD have a wealth of information supporting writing in the mathematics class, as well as activities, examples of student work, rubrics to help grade and many helpful websites that teachers may use. My main contribution to this project was the research and many examples of what to expect on the standardized tests that expect explanation answers. I contributed many activities and some of the rubrics. Many of the websites I have found to be helpful were included. I also created the CD to help teachers. The idea of creating the binder and CD was to give teachers a creative and easy-to-use resource to help implement writing in the mathematics classroom on a regular basis. Hopefully, by having the binder and the CD, math teachers will have less anxiety, and be comfortable with the change. This will result in students feeling more comfortable and confident to write mathematically, so they will perform better on state mandated tests. Nicole Erdelyi- The reform movement of Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) requires all teachers to incorporate writing in their classrooms, including math teachers. Unfortunately, many math teachers do not integrate writing into their classrooms on a regular basis. This collaborative final project focuses on the issue of writing in the secondary mathematics classroom. The ultimate goal was to provide math teachers with an easy-to-use resource in order to sway them to incorporate writing into their classrooms on a regular basis, therefore, a mathematics writing binder and a CD were created. The binder and CD contain information gathered during research that establishes the importance of writing in mathematics courses, descriptions of different types of writing activities, examples of activities, student work and grading rubrics. Group members worked collaboratively and independently on certain aspects of this project. My main contributions included writing a majority of the activities and introductions for sections in the binder and supplying most of the student sample work. Some activities included grading rubrics. I also created the survey that questioned students on their thoughts about writing in math class and collected and graphed data from approximately ninety students in my classes. I helped assemble the binders and offered suggestions for what to include on the CD. The binder and CD are easily accessible resources for math teachers. Having ready to use activities will lessen the stress teachers may feel in transitioning lessons to include writing.
