Book excerpt: The Department of Defense, USAF, and Air Mobility Command (AMC) rely on the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) to provide supplemental airlift in times of national emergency. AMC oversees the CRAF program which contains three segments: international, national, and aeromedical evacuation. The CRAF aeromedical Evacuation (AE) program involves commercial B-767 aircraft, Aeromedical Evacuation Shipsets (AESS), a Casualty Transfer System, and a large number of support personnel and equipment. Wartime planning in the early 198Os revealed a significant shortage of military airlift to accomplish the aeromedical evacuation mission. Consequently the CRAF AE program was initiated. Planning for Major Regional Conflict scenarios has currently set a requirement for 25 and 44 B-767 aircraft for CRAF Stages II and III, respectively. Unfortunately AMC has not been able to acquire full commitment to the CRAF AE program. In addition, the CRAF AE program has been beleaguered by a number of problems which have continually kept capability of the overall system low. This graduate research paper provides a comprehensive review of the AE shortfall issue from beginning to the present with recommendations and conclusions for the near future.

Book excerpt: Modern US Army rotary wing aeromedical evacuation operations and doctrinal concepts can be traced back to the Korean and Vietnam Wars. These early concepts have formed the foundation for the current doctrine, structure, and employment of aeromedical evacuation assets on the battlefields of today. Aeromedical evacuation operations performed during the Korean and Vietnam Wars were executed in an exceptional manner. The medical personnel, hospital system, medical evacuation, and many other medical functions all contributed to the overall success of medical operations. The overall purpose of this research is to identify and describe the major historical operational factors of US Army rotary wing aeromedical evacuation system in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The successful operations of US Army rotary wing aeromedical evacuation system in each of these wars permit a historical comparison between them.

Book excerpt: From the wheatfields of the Civil War to the jungles and paddies of Vietnam, the United States has led the world in adapting modern transport technology to the humanitarian goal of saving the lives of the sick and wounded. Drawing on its first experiments with helicopters in Korea, the Army in Vietnam came to rely almost entirely on the helicopter for medical evacuation. The Dust Off and Medevac helicopter ambulance unites tested and perfected for medical use the Army's new helicopter, the UH-1, and developed several new devices, especially the hoist, that helped save thousands of American and allied lives between 1962 and 1973. The pilots of these helicopter ambulances displayed a courage and devotion to duty that earned them widespread respect from soldiers in Vietnam. This book chronicles the early problems of medical evacuation in Vietnam, recounts the valor of several of the Dust Off crews, and describes the procedures and equipment used to speed the movement of patients to in-theater Army hospitals. It also shows the effect that the helicopter had on traditional Army procedures dating back to the Civil War. The widespread use of the helicopter for medical evacuation in America since the Vietnam War testifies to the broader issues raised by this study, and of the relevance of Army history to the civilian community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the words "We'll take one!", then Colonel Leo Goodrich brought to the 133rd Airlift Wing of the Minnesota Air National Guard a new unit with a very specific mission - transporting injured personal from one point to another via airlift. Decided virtually 'on a whim', Col Goodrich set in motion the saga of the 109th Aeromedical Evacuation Flight/Squadron. The story begins with a Prologue that provides a brief, backward glance at the history of the Minnesota Air National Guard and also tells how the squadron came to be. The authors then chose to uniquely organize the book by chapters dedicated to the commanders who led this incredible unit throughout the years. Written in a distinctive style reminiscent of military logbooks, these chapters are chronologically organized by years and subdivided into months detailing an exhaustive, comprehensive account that covers the unit from its initial organization in 1961 to present day. Commanders' notes, interviews, excerpts from wing and squadron newsletters, personal stories, and letters from deployed squadron members capture the life of an airman throughout this unit's 60 years of existence. As detailed in the book, early squadron members had no uniforms or training materials and training was conducted in-house until formal school slots became available. At one time, the unit's survival was even in question. The story continues detailing how the squadron overcame these and many other obstacles throughout the years, transforming itself from the "stepchild" to the pride of their wing, and in the process garnering national recognition in the Air Force and National Guard with numerous awards for its innovation and performance. Participating in all contingency operations since the Cold War through the first two decades of this century, these aeromeds regularly rotated on and off deployments that took them all over the globe. Their exploits are chronicled within these pages ranging from light-hearted to sobering stories offering genuine insight into the realities of war and conflict as experienced by all unit personnel. The book concludes with several noteworthy appendices including a squadron patch history, a historical perspective on training flights, a list of all conflicts the unit members have been involved in, aircraft in which they have flown, and a touching story of how retired members of this closely knit unit have maintained ties with one another in recent years. In addition, a wide variety of photos are interspersed throughout, adding an important visual dimension to this work. One book reviewer writes: "As I began to read, an engaging, warm and very human story soon emerged - a story about dedication, kindness, fun, courage, personal sacrifice, and determination by real people with personalities who, in spite of often stressful circumstances, carried on, did their duty with good spirit, and gave of themselves for the benefit of others." This is a great read for not only those who have served with the unit and their families but for those who are interested in a historical perspective of how everyday citizens have transformed a fledgling unit into arguably the best aeromedical unit in the United States Air Force. The authors, TSgt Richard H. Childs, USAF, Ret. and Col Michael A. Germain, USAF, Ret. served in the 109th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron for a combined 27 years, accumulated over 1,500 hours flying aerovac training/live missions and deployed 5 times in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

This book was released on 2000-03 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) is a contractual arrangement between Air Mobility Command (AMC) and U.S. air carriers. The agreement states that the airlines will commit a specified number of planes to AMC in return for a portion of peacetime government business. The Aeromedical Evacuation (AE) segment of CRAF is the only segment that requires modification to committed aircraft and, therefore, more risk to the airlines. Up until fiscal year 2000, AMC had never filled its requirements for AE. AMC would like to have more airlines join the AE segment, with each airline providing a few aircraft. This thesis considers the history of the program, lessons learned from previous operations, current strategies, and some alternatives to investigate in order to improve the CRAF AE program and participation by the airlines.
