Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Wheat Prospects The above estimate of wheat available for export and carry-over includes for the United States a figure of 429 million bushels as of January 1, 1932, compared with 355 million a year earlier. The estimated total supply of wheat available in the United States for the 1931-32 season, including carry - over from thu preceding year and the new crop, amounted to bushels. Allewind for a consumption of bushels for food, feed and Waste (compared with bushels disappearance for these purposes last year) and bushels to be used as seed, would leave bushels available for export during the 1931 - 32 seasan and for carry - over into the following crop year. Net exports of wheat including flour frovuly 1 to December 31 were approximately bushels (of which, however, about bushels 18 in store in Canada apparently awaiting sale abroad) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Wheat Prospects: January 31, 1933 Consequently, there are a number of hopeful aspects in the supply side of the wheat marketing outlook during 1933 in spite of continued heavy stocks in accounted for positions. In view of indications of the past 6 months, both in the United States and abroad, that the declines of business activity have been stopped, here seem to be fairly good prospects that demand conditions will be no worse than in the past year. Hence there is reason to believe that conditio in the world's wheat markets may show a gradual though irregular improvement during the coming year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Wheat Prospects: January 27, 1936 The prolonged cold wave in the United States was finally broken about February 22 by a marked change to warmer weather, causing the snow and ice to melt leaving the ground bare in much of the wheat belt. During the cold period the upper mlsslsslppl Valley, Lake Regions, and the Great Plains southward to northern Missouri were well protected. In the Ohio Valley, condition generally appears only about fair, with more or less damage from the prolonged cold weather. In Missouri much wheat in the southwestern part is believed dead but elsewhere condition in the State is believed good. In Iowa the ground is still well covered with snow, except in some northern sections. In Kansas the snow cover has largely disappeared With moisture good in the eastern third, barely sufficient in the middle third, and deficie in the West; in the latter, the 8011 is blowing and considerable damage probable. Wheat is shoving in the eastern third of Kansas, but it is reporte frozen. Wheat needs moisture badly in western Oklahoma and southeastern Colorado, and while rains mould be beneficial in both Texas and Oklahoma, con dition 18 still fair to good. 'montana has been benefited by considerable snow and recently some rain. In the Peeific Northwest there has been good snow protection in parts, but the general condition is uncertain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: August 1960 World wheat crop prospects indicate a crop second only to the record production in 1958. Though it is too early for firm estimates in many countries, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, preliminary prospects are for a 5 per cent increase above the large 1959 harvest of billion bushels. Increases mainly in North America and Asia are partly offset by smaller crops in Europe. Current prospects for world trade in the marketing year beginning July 1, 1960 are for an increase over the previous year. The primary basis for the expected rise of possibly 30 to 50 million bushels is the increased import requirements of Europe and Asia. Crop conditions in most of the coun tries of Europe, especially France, Spain and Italy, are less favorable than last year. Although larger crops are forecast for Asia, the usual large import requirements exist in India and Pakistan. As a result, a substantial increase in exports from North America may be expected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: July-September, 1953 Total domestic wheat supplies for the marketing year which began July 1, 1953 are now estimated at about million bushels. This would be the largest on record and 10 percent above the previous peak of million bushels in l9h2-li3. It also would be 13 percent above the million bushels of 1952-53. Domestic disappearance for l953-5h is estimated at about 700 million bushels, slightly more than the 692 mil lion of 1952-53. If exports total about 260 million, about 800 million would be left for carryover on July 1, l95h. This would be more than 25 percent above the record of 631 million in i9h2, and about percent above the 559 million for July 1, 1953. The final size of our exports will depend upon the way crops turn out in both exporting and importing countries. On the basis of early season prospects, United States exports may be expected to range between 250 and 275 million bushels. Exports World wheat trade volume has fluctuated between wide extremes in recent years, prompting considerable interest by producers, grain traders, and other segments of the public. For a brief period in the mid-1960's, concern centered on the possibilities of food shortages and mass starvation in parts of the world. Beneath the surface of the wide changes in world import needs, there has been a continued struggle among the major wheat exporting countries as they have tried to maintain or improve their positions in world markets. This struggle goes on at times of oversupply as well as during periods of shortage. Analysis shows that some significant changes in the relative positions of the different suppliers have occurred in recent years. These changes are especially important because they tend to set the pattern for future years. It is the purpose of this report to review these changes; to survey the current general competitive situation in world wheat markets, with a particular view toward short-term us. Export prospects; and to serve as a base or reference point from which future competitive developments and shifts in wheat trade patterns can be evaluated. A number of graphic illustrations are included, which provide a quick description of certain key elements in the world wheat situation. In addition, several tables have been developed which focus particularly upon the supply patterns that surround the various segments of the world wheat market. This report is the first in a proposed series of periodic reviews, each of which, at annual or semiannual intervals, will update the tabular material contained in this first report, provide a current analysis of short-term u.s. Wheat export prospects, and present such supplemental information on supplies, prices, or other competitive developments as may be of current interest. Total world supplies of wheat, after increas ing from 1929 to 1933, declined sharply following successive years of small production and increased world demand. The apparent world disappearance has averaged about million bushels during the past 10 years. 'world prices of wheat moved steadily upward from the spring of 1933 to the summer of 1937, reflecting higher world commodity price levels, four success ive below-average harvests in North America, and the 1935-36 short Southern Hemisphere crop. In 1936-37 wheat prices ad venced sharply as a result of increased demand and the smallest supplies in recent years. World wheat production* in 1937-38 is estimated at million bushels, or about 290 million bushels larger than in 1936-37. World stockse about July 1, 1937, however, were estimated at around 215 million bushels smaller than a year earlier, resulting in.total supplies in 1937-38 about 75 million bushels larger than the small supplies in the pre ceding year. Net exports from Soviet Russia in 1937-38 are estimated at about 38 million bushels compared with 4 million bushels in 1936-37. With somewhat larger supplies, uncertain prospects for world business activity, and weakness in the general price level, wheat prices declined generally during the 1937-38 selling season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Production Prospects for Wheat, Feed, and Livestock, 1960-65 In recent years, agricultural production has continued to exceed use outlets for farm products, despite production restrictions and Special dis posal programs. The rate of increase in farm output was greatly accelerated during the World War 11 years, and the pace has continued in the 1950's. Higher produc tion per acre and per animal resulting from adoption of improved technology and management is the chief source of output expansion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Food Situation: Prospects for World Grain Production, Consumption, and Trade There is great interest in whether the world will be able to produce enough food to sustain likely increases in population and to support desired or satisfactory rates of eco nomic development. This is one of the most complex and important problems facing modern man. A wide variety of factors that affect food production, consumption, and trade must be dealt with simultaneously. These include the natural resources of nations, the science and technology of making resources more produc tive, a wide range of economic and political factors, and the cultural and institutional factors that condition human behavior. Estimates of the crop from the fourteen countries which have reported to date total bushels compared with bushels in 1927-28. Russia is the only large producing country for which no estimate of production is available and reports on acreage and condition indicates that the crop in that country is the largest in many years. It was evident that the buying power for wheat in the respective countries would not be impaired by the currency moves: first, because the resultant increase in the internal price can be obviated by a reduction in import tariffs, such as has been decreed in Italy; second, becuse the currency devaluations seemed more likely to stimulate and raise general purchasing power than to diminish it. Technical but only temporary obstacles to continental wheat business resulted from the devaluation wave. These were considered to be of secondary significance, except for some possible effect on the volume, or at least the direction, of wheat exports from Rumania.
