Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil is formed from physical and chemical weathering of rocks - processes described historically because they involve eons of time-by glaciation and by wind and water transport of soil materials, later deposited in deltas and loessial planes. Soil undergoes further transformations over time and provides a habitat for biological life and a base for the development of civilizations. Soil is dynamic -always changing as a result of the forces of nature and particularly by human influences. The soil has been studied as long as history has been documented. Numerous references to soil are found in historical writings such as Aristotle (384-322 B. c. ), Theophrastus (372-286 B. c. ), Cato the Elder (234-149 B. C. ) and Varro (116-27 B. c. ). Some of the earliest historical references have to do with erosional forces of wind and water. The study of soils today has taken on increased importance because a rapidly expanding population is placing demands on the soil never before experienced. This has led to an increase in land degradation and desertification. Desertifica tion is largely synonymous with land degradation but in an arid land context. Deterioration of soil resources is largely human induced. Poverty, ignorance, and greed are the indirect causes of desertification. The direct cause is mismanage ment of the land by practices such as overgrazing, tree removal, improper tillage, poorly designed and managed water distribution systems, and overexploitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports on recent research designed to help increase the productivity of scarce tropical farmland without damaging the environment by gaining a better understanding of the chemical, biological, and ecological aspects of relationships between the critical element nitrogen in plants and soils. Describes the use of isotopically- labeled nitrogen in experimentation, the impact of the tropical environment on nitrogen transformation in the soil, annual fluctuations of native available soil nitrogen, the interaction of major fertilizers with different soils, the role of micro-flora in nitrogen availability, the behavior of applied nitrogen in wet and submerged soils, and advances in nitrogen-fixing by Rhizobium- legume symbiosis. All but 10 of the 42 papers are reprinted from Fertilizer Research vol. 42 nos. 1-3 (1995). No index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis Asian Development by : William E. James
Download or read book Asian Development written by William E. James and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the world's attention has been focused on the spectacular economic success of Japan and Korea, the less developed countries of Asia have often been neglected. Asian Development closes the gap. In nontechnical style and with minimal mathematics, it presents an in-depth perspective on the economic development of fourteen countries in East, Southeast, and South Asia. Asian Development is mainly a story of success. Though some problems remain, Asian countries have shown remarkable resilience in responding to sharp changes in the international economy--oil shocks, world recession and inflation, exchange-rate and interest-rate fluctuations, and rapid technological change. The authors conclude that their ability to adjust to changing external conditions is closely related to intelligent governmental policies. Looking back they comment: "In the past, growth of the United States and Japan pulled up the growth rates of the smaller economies in the region." Looking forward, they predict: "In the future, increasingly it will be the growth of the Asian developing countries that acts as a catalyst to growth in the more advanced economies."
Download or read book Rice written by Bor S. Luh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice is one of the principal cereals used by the world's inhabitants. The hope for improved nourishment of the world's population depends on the development of better rice varieties and improved methods for rice production and utilization. During the past four decades, interest in rice research and production has increased in many countries. The development of new and better varieties by the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and other rice research institutes has stimulated numerous research stations to test the performance of these varieties in many countries under different climates, soil properties, cultural practices, and environmental conditions. The methods of harvesting, handling, drying, and milling rough rice have improved as a result of research efforts by the engineers and the rice milling industries. The first edition of Rice: Production and Utilization was published in 1980. This second edition presents the recent developments and progress made by the researchers, the industries, and various experiment stations. Because of the large amounts of literature available in recent years on rice production and utilization, this edition is divided into two volumes, Volume 1: Production and Volume II: Utilization. It is hoped that the books will be useful to rice researchers, processors, and people interested in rice production and utilization. Those studying v vi PREFACE the agronomy of rice plants, especially the genetics, breeding, cultivation, diseases, and insects that attack both the rice plant and the stored grain, will find this edition helpful in their search for new knowledge.
