Book Synopsis A Course in Advanced Calculus by : Robert S. Borden
Download or read book A Course in Advanced Calculus written by Robert S. Borden and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable undergraduate-level text offers a study in calculus that simultaneously unifies the concepts of integration in Euclidean space while at the same time giving students an overview of other areas intimately related to mathematical analysis. The author achieves this ambitious undertaking by shifting easily from one related subject to another. Thus, discussions of topology, linear algebra, and inequalities yield to examinations of innerproduct spaces, Fourier series, and the secret of Pythagoras. Beginning with a look at sets and structures, the text advances to such topics as limit and continuity in En, measure and integration, differentiable mappings, sequences and series, applications of improper integrals, and more. Carefully chosen problems appear at the end of each chapter, and this new edition features an additional appendix of tips and solutions for selected problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workshop Calculus: Guided Exploration with Review integrates a review of basic pre-calculus concepts with the study of concepts encountered in a traditional first semester calculus course - functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, and an introduction to integration techniques. This two-course sequence is designed for students who are not prepared to enter Calculus I, but who need to develop mathematical skills for further study in the social sciences, natural sciences, or mathematics. The primary goal of the course is to help students develop firm conceptual understandings of the fundamental ideas in calculus, thereby enabling them to use calculus in other disciplines. Essential elements of Workshop Calculus include the emphasis on applications to enhance student motivation and the use of computers amd graphing calculators to help explore mathematical ideas.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Mindsets by : Jo Boaler
Download or read book Mathematical Mindsets written by Jo Boaler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banish math anxiety and give students of all ages a clear roadmap to success Mathematical Mindsets provides practical strategies and activities to help teachers and parents show all children, even those who are convinced that they are bad at math, that they can enjoy and succeed in math. Jo Boaler—Stanford researcher, professor of math education, and expert on math learning—has studied why students don't like math and often fail in math classes. She's followed thousands of students through middle and high schools to study how they learn and to find the most effective ways to unleash the math potential in all students. There is a clear gap between what research has shown to work in teaching math and what happens in schools and at home. This book bridges that gap by turning research findings into practical activities and advice. Boaler translates Carol Dweck's concept of 'mindset' into math teaching and parenting strategies, showing how students can go from self-doubt to strong self-confidence, which is so important to math learning. Boaler reveals the steps that must be taken by schools and parents to improve math education for all. Mathematical Mindsets: Explains how the brain processes mathematics learning Reveals how to turn mistakes and struggles into valuable learning experiences Provides examples of rich mathematical activities to replace rote learning Explains ways to give students a positive math mindset Gives examples of how assessment and grading policies need to change to support real understanding Scores of students hate and fear math, so they end up leaving school without an understanding of basic mathematical concepts. Their evasion and departure hinders math-related pathways and STEM career opportunities. Research has shown very clear methods to change this phenomena, but the information has been confined to research journals—until now. Mathematical Mindsets provides a proven, practical roadmap to mathematics success for any student at any age.
Book Synopsis Undergraduate Mathematics for the Life Sciences by : Glenn Ledder
Download or read book Undergraduate Mathematics for the Life Sciences written by Glenn Ledder and published by MAA. This book was released on 2013 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a gap between the extensive mathematics background that is beneficial to biologists and the minimal mathematics background biology students acquire in their courses. The result is an undergraduate education in biology with very little quantitative content. New mathematics courses must be devised with the needs of biology students in mind. In this volume, authors from a variety of institutions address some of the problems involved in reforming mathematics curricula for biology students. The problems are sorted into three themes: Models, Processes, and Directions. It is difficult for mathematicians to generate curriculum ideas for the training of biologists so a number of the curriculum models that have been introduced at various institutions comprise the Models section. Processes deals with taking that great course and making sure it is institutionalized in both the biology department (as a requirement) and in the mathematics department (as a course that will live on even if the creator of the course is no longer on the faculty). Directions looks to the future, with each paper laying out a case for pedagogical developments that the authors would like to see.

Book Synopsis Calculus Renewal by : Susan L. Ganter
Download or read book Calculus Renewal written by Susan L. Ganter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculus Reform. Or, as many would prefer, calculus renewal. These are terms that, for better or worse, have become a part of the vocabulary in mathematics departments across the country. The movement to change the nature of the calculus course at the undergraduate and secondary levels has sparked discussion and controversy in ways as diverse as the actual changes. Such interactions range from "coffee pot conversations" to university curriculum committee agendas to special sessions on calculus renewal at regional and national conferences. But what is the significance of these activities? Where have we been and where are we going with calculus and, more importantly, the entire scope of undergraduate mathematics education? In April 1996, I received a fellowship from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). This fellowship afforded me the opportunity to work in residence at NSF on a number of evaluation projects, including the national impact of the calculus reform movement since 1988. That project resulted in countless communications with the mathematics community and others about the status of calculus as a course in isolation and as a significant player in the overall undergraduate mathematics and science experience for students (and faculty). While at NSF (and through a second NSF grant received while at the American Association for Higher Education), I also was part of an evaluation project for the Institution-wide Reform (IR) program.

Download or read book BioMath in the Schools written by Margaret B. Cozzens and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though contemporary biology and mathematics are inextricably linked, high school biology and mathematics courses have traditionally been taught in isolation. But this is beginning to change. This volume presents papers related to the integration of biology and mathematics in high school classes. The first part of the book provides the rationale for integrating mathematics and biology in high school courses as well as opportunities for doing so. The second part explores the development and integration of curricular materials and includes responses from teachers. Papers in the third part of the book explore the interconnections between biology and mathematics in light of new technologies in biology. The last paper in the book discusses what works and what doesn't and presents positive responses from students to the integration of mathematics and biology in their classes.
