Academic libraries in Ohio have been participating in OhioLINK since 1988, and the consortium has had an effect on shaping local collections for more than one decade. While each institution pursues its own collection management strategy, the shared resources and delivery system provided through OhioLINK influence local collections profoundly. What has been the effect? This work is a collection of articles assessing local collections within a consortial environment. The authors assess collections from their own vantage points, considering such diverse factors as cost, regional depositories, book reviews, and faculty input. Book excerpt: Get informed answers to your questions and concerns about integrating the materials in your library’s collection Library collections have always included materials in many formats—handling a mix of material types is an accepted part of library work. And in recent years, the very concept of “collection” has been significantly redefined by the addition of electronic resources. But are print and digital materials really merged in library collections or are they treated and maintained as separate entities? Integrating Print and Digital Resources in Library Collections examines a variety of collection management issues, combining practical theory, research findings, “how-to” articles, and opinion pieces to encourage efforts in establishing fully integrated and accessible collections. While achieving a truly integrated collection can be difficult, the failure to do so can lead to duplication of access, effort, and expense. Integrating Print and Digital Resources in Library Collections can help guide you through the difficult aspects of keeping your collection up-to-date, including the “Big Deal” and consortial purchasing, shifting the emphasis from purchasing print to procuring online resources for library reference work, analyzing use patterns of electronic versus hard copy resources, serials workflow studies, and review projects. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the five years since the first edition of Developing Library Collections for Today’s Young Adults was published, numerous changes have taken place in the landscape of young adult literature and young adult library services. Informed by the professional activism—including the “We Need Diverse Books” (#wndb) movement—today’s professionals recognize that library collections for young adults are incomplete if they fail to address and reflect a diversity of racial, ethnic, and cultural identities; gender identities; sexual orientations; and identities related to ability and disability. Contemporary librarians working to diversify their collections select material in a number of formats and must consider the accessibility of both old and new media as they select titles and resources. Developing Library Collections for Today’s Young Adults, Ensuring Inclusion and Access, Second Edition, offers guidance to librarians confronted with an expanding universe of published material from which to select. With special emphasis on the principles of inclusion and accessibility, this new edition of Developing Library Collections includes guidelines for creating a young adult collection development policy, conducting a needs assessment, and evaluating and selecting print and nonprint material for the library’s YA collection.

Book Synopsis Library Collection Development Policies by : Frank W. Hoffmann
Download or read book Library Collection Development Policies written by Frank W. Hoffmann and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents an ongoing effort to fill the void in the library literature relating to collection development policies. The authors, whose experience each spans four decades as library educators and practitioners, created the book--as well as a forthcoming companion volume devoted to school libraries--to assist both library school students and professionals in the field in the compilation, revision, and implementation of collection development policies. Cutting edge trends such as digital document delivery and library cooperation are also covered. Furthermore, given the premise that a well-rounded policy reflects all activities concerning the collection management process--including the evaluation, selection, acquisition, and weeding of information resources--it is hoped that this work will also prove useful to non-librarians possessing some kind of stake in high quality library holdings, such as library board members, politicians, and administrators directly responsible for library operations, and institutional patrons.

Book Synopsis Collaborating for Impact by : Kristen Totleben
Download or read book Collaborating for Impact written by Kristen Totleben and published by Association of College & Research Libraries. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Special collections and liaison librarian partnerships can have a tremendous impact on the work within the library and the university community. Designed to guide the reader through three different themes - collection stewardship; projects, research, and exhibitions; and instruction - Collaborating for Impact: Special Collections and Liaison Librarian Partnerships offers inspiration and case studies detailing how these departments can impact research, teaching, and learning by working collaboratively. With individual expertise and skillsets, librarians and staff are together better equipped to provide researchers with a holistic, well-rounded perspective on the research process and scholarship. Collaborating for Impact opens with an exploration of current collaboration between liaison and special collections librarians, including a thorough literature review. A proposed framework for acquiring general and special collections that document the history of the academy and remain responsive to campus curricular needs, and a tutorial on object-based pedagogy that can underpin such arrangements, follow. And finally, there are thirteen case studies that provide concrete examples of how to move the needle towards sustainable efforts and away from one-off examples. If special collections are destined to become the mainstay of the library, many more paths to deeper collaboration can and should be developed. Special collections and liaison librarian partnerships offer a good foundation from which teamwork can take root across administrative, physical, and cultural divides. This book addresses a gap in both special collections and liaison librarian literature, showing how librarians work together across library departments"--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Shared Print Repositories by : Karen S. Fischer
Download or read book Shared Print Repositories written by Karen S. Fischer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the growing endeavours of shared print repositories and programs in academic libraries, representing a global perspective with authors from Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and the United States. It illustrates the complicated processes and challenges of coordinating selection, determining storage agreements (distributed or shared), ownership concerns, business models, and a host of collection maintenance issues. These efforts entail immense collaboration, regardless of the size of the project. Luckily, librarians are good at collaboration, but not always good at forging ahead into an uncertain future with regard to print collections. As echoed by authors in this book, the future is indeed uncertain, but undoubtedly libraries who partner together to address print archiving dilemmas will be better prepared for whatever the future holds. This book was originally published as a special issue of Collection Management.
Book Synopsis Transforming Acquisitions and Collection Services by : Michelle Flinchbaugh
Download or read book Transforming Acquisitions and Collection Services written by Michelle Flinchbaugh and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of case studies as well as useful analysis of the benefits and challenges of each. By supporting each other’s acquisitions services in a consortium, libraries leverage size to get better prices, and share systems and expertise to maximize resources while minimizing costs. Within libraries, the acquisitions function can be combined with other library functions in a unit with more than one purpose, or acquisitions can develop a close working relationship with another unit to support their work. This book surveys practice at different libraries and at different library consortia, and presents a detailed description and analysis of a variety of practices for how acquisitions units support each other within a consortium, and how they work with other library units, specifically collection management, cataloging, interlibrary loan, and the digital repository, in the form of case studies. A final section of the book covers fundamentals of collaboration.
