Book excerpt: "Although work zones certainly present potential hazards to all drivers, truck drivers in particular are presented with many demanding situations in work zones. These situations include narrow lane widths, poor superelevation, and reduced passing opportunities. Pavement/shoulder drop-offs occur frequently in work zones that require excavation or removal of pavement and shoulder material adjacent to lanes open to traffic. Such drop-offs present obvious hazards to vehicles that run off the work zone roadway. This report presents the results of research on these two issues"--Technical report documentation page.

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Synopsis Design Considerations for Two-lane, Two-way Work Zone Operations by :
Download or read book Design Considerations for Two-lane, Two-way Work Zone Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practice used during long-term construction activities on divided highways is to allow two-lane, two-way traffic operations (TLTWO) on one roadway while the other roadway is completely closed to traffic. Federal, state, and local officials have become increasingly concerned in recent years about safety problems in TLTWO work zones. This report presents the results of operational and accident studies of 36 construction sites employing either two-lane, two-way operations or lane closure traffic control. Project cost information for four TLTWO and ten lane closure sites was also analyzed. Results of the study were divided into four areas: evaluation of centerline treatments on the two-way roadway segment; design of temporary median crossover roadways; comparison of TLTWO and lane closure operations; and general results.

It guides you through common roadway defects, explores historical standards, accident circumstances, and legal arguments. The second half provides an overview of lawsuits brought against states, and municipalities for accidents claimed to have been caused by one or more of the roadway safety topics discussed in the first section of the book.

Transportation Research Board and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1984 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transportation Research Board's Committee on Surface Properties-Vehicle Interaction recognized that no comprehensive effort had ever been made to compile and discuss the various kinds of discontinuities that occur in roadway surfaces and their influence on traffic safety. Consequently, a Task Group was appointed by the Committee to compile such a document. The objectives of the Task Group were to identify and discuss the safety implication of significant categories or surface discontinuities and document relevant literature for each category. The results of the Task Group's activity, contained in this report, will provide a useful resource for decision makers and others involved in providing and maintaining safe traveled surfaces.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this conference was to focus attention on the most costly element of intermodal service, the terminal. In spite of all the recent activity in terminal construction, expansion and rehabilitation, the challenge left is in the development of even more efficient, high-productivity intermodal systems that generate a lower net unit cost per container or trailer. The topics covered are: Surface treatment; Current facility design and construction projects; intermodal equipment, and Operations and process control systems.
