Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Gray was born on 26 December 1716 in Cornhill in London. His father was a scrivener and his mother a milliner. He was the fifth of twelve children and the only one to survive. With his father becoming mentally unwell and abusing his wife she left with Thomas in tow for a safer life. Thomas was sent to Eton, where two of his uncles worked, and although he was a delicate and scholarly child with an aversion to sports he found it suited him. Whilst there he made three close friends; Horace Walpole, son of the Prime Minister Robert Walpole; Thomas Ashton, and Richard West. The four prided themselves on their style, humour, and appreciation of beauty. They were called the "quadruple alliance." In 1734 Gray went up to Peterhouse, Cambridge. Although his family wished him to study law he spent most of his time reading classical and modern literature, and playing Vivaldi and Scarlatti on the harpsichord for relaxation. In 1738 he accompanied his old school-friend Walpole on his Grand Tour of Europe. It was Walpole who later helped publish Gray's poetry. Gray began to seriously write poems in 1742, mainly after his close friend Richard West died. He moved to Cambridge and began a programme of literary study. Gray was a brilliant bookworm, a quiet, abstracted, dreaming scholar. He became a Fellow first of Peterhouse, and later of Pembroke College where he had moved after the students at Peterhouse played a prank on him. It is thought that Gray began writing his masterpiece, the Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, in the graveyard of St Giles parish church in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, in 1742. After several years of leaving it unfinished, he completed it in 1750. When Gray sent it to Walpole, Walpole sent off the poem as a manuscript and it appeared in many magazines. Gray then published the poem himself and received the credit he was due. The poem was a literary sensation. Its reflective, calm and stoic tone was greatly admired, and despite the piracy it was imitated, quoted and translated into Latin and Greek. Gray spent most of his life as a scholar in Cambridge, and only travelled again later in life. Although he wrote little he is regarded by some as the foremost English-language poet of the mid-18th century. In 1757, he was offered the post of Poet Laureate, which he refused. Gray was extremely self-critical and feared failure. He once wrote that he feared his collected works would be "mistaken for the works of a flea." Gray came to be known as one of the "Graveyard poets" of the late 18th century, along with Oliver Goldsmith, William Cowper, and Christopher Smart. Gray perhaps knew these men, sharing ideas about death, mortality, and the finality of death. In 1768, after the death of Lawrence Brockett the Regius chair of Modern History at Cambridge, a sinecure which carried a salary of 400, fell vacant and Gray secured the position. Thomas Gray died on 30 July 1771 in Cambridge, and was buried beside his mother in the churchyard of Stoke Poges, the setting for his famous Elegy.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. Jewish Studies. Memoir. Translated from the German by Elborg Foster. Though Hilda Stern wrote about her experiences for a few years after the war, first in a DP camp and then in New York, she hid her notebooks after her marriage to Werner Cohen. A mother and Jewish teacher, she also spoke to school groups of her experiences during the war—two years before she died, Hilda did extensive recorded interviews with storyteller Gail Rosen. However, only after her death did her husband discover the seven faded German notebooks of a half century before and their 150 poems and prose texts. The interviews with Rosen and translations of her Hilda's German poetry by Elborg Forster were brought together by the editors—Werner V. Cohen, Gail Rosen, and William Gilcher—to produce WORDS THAT BURN WITHIN ME: FAITH, VALUES, SURVIVAL.

Book excerpt: There are 200 poems to explore in this collection—poems about love, and war; songs of the sea; tales of magic and adventure; rhythmic rhapsodies; nonsense verse; descriptions of the world (and the creatures in it), and of the seasons, and the soul. Many of the poems here will be familiar to you already. We have ransacked the common treasure hoard of “classics”, collecting those best-known, and best-loved masterpieces that have long stood the test of time. But we have also explored further beneath the mountain, and unearthed some rarer gems. You may enter the collection through the front door if you wish; the very first poem provides a key. But do not feel compelled to proceed directly forward. Those readers who best explore a collection of verse, do so as though in possession of map which, while appearing to guide their footsteps, is revealed on closer inspection to be a perfect and absolute blank. This book is organized thematically, with 10 poems for each of the following 20 themes: 1) Magic and Wonder 2) Animalia: Mammals 3) Animalia: Birds 4) Animalia: Creep, Crawl, and Fly 5) Love and Friendship 6) War and Conflict 7) The Natural World 8) Life and Inspiration 9) Sadness and Remembrance 10) Journeys and Adventures 11) Tales and Songs 12) Songs of the Sea 13) Reflecting on Things 14) Humour and Curiosities 15) Nonsense 16) Miniatures 17) Stars, Moon, and Night 18) Sleep, Dreams, and Lullabies 19) The Year Round; Spring and Summer 20) The Year Round; Autumn and Winter Included are masterpieces by Christina Rossetti, Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, Robert Burns, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, Sara Teasdale, William Blake, Byron, Robert Frost and many other outstanding poets. Please view the preview of this book for a full listing. At Elsinore Books we pride ourselves on creating beautiful e-books, and devote great attention to formatting, and ease of navigation. This book contains a cleanly-styled contents page that permits easy movement between the poems. This book is part of the Best of Poetry series, which also includes: The Best of Poetry: Thoughts that Breathe and Words that Burn The Best of Poetry: Shakespeare, Muse of Fire

Book excerpt: Winner of the PEN Ackerley Prize • Longlisted for the 2019 PEN Open Book Award “Devastating and lyrical.” —The New York Times “Suspenseful and affecting.” —The New Yorker From the celebrated poet behind bone, a collection of poems that tells a story of coming-of-age, uncovering the cruelty and beauty of the world, going under, and finding redemption Through her signature sharp, searing poems, this is the story of Yrsa Daley-Ward and all the things that happened. “Even the terrible things. And God, there were terrible things.” It’s about her childhood in the northwest of England with her beautiful, careworn mother Marcia; the man formerly known as Dad (half fun, half frightening); and her little brother Roo, who sees things written in the stars. It’s also about the surreal magic of adolescence, about growing up and discovering the power and fear of sexuality, about pitch-gray days of pills and powder and connection. It’s about damage and pain, but also joy. With raw intensity and shocking honesty, The Terrible is a collection of poems that tells the story of what it means to lose yourself and find your voice. “You may not run away from the thing that you are because it comes and comes and comes as sure as you breathe.”

Book excerpt: Catching Life by the Throat unites the sound, sense, and sensibility that lie at the heart of great poetry. It features eight great poets, with brief, accessible essays concerning their life and work and a selection of their poems, and it is accompanied by an 80-minute CD recorded live at the British Library: Ralph Fiennes reading Auden, Edward Fox reading Eliot, Roger Moore reading Kipling, Harold Pinter reading Larkin, and more. Whether you believe (like Robert Frost, who inspired the title) that poetry is a way of "taking life by the throat" or (like T. S. Eliot) that it "is one person talking to another," nobody does it better than the poets featured in this book. For a novice discovering the rich heritage of English-language verse or a seasoned poetry reader, Catching Life by the Throat is an extraordinary introduction to eight iconic poets.

Combining close reading with a panoramic breadth of learning, Camille Paglia sharpens our understanding of poems we thought we knew, from Shakespeare to Dickinson to Plath, and makes a case for including in the canon works by Paul Blackburn, Wanda Coleman, Chuck Wachtel, Rochelle Kraut—and even Joni Mitchell. Daring, riveting, and beautifully written, Break, Blow, Burn is a modern classic that excites even seasoned poetry lovers—and continues to create generations of new ones.
