Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of George Washington: In Words of One Syllable The life story of a public man cannot help being to some extent the same thing as a history of the times in which he lived, and to the case of none does this remark apply with more force than to that of the "Father of his Country;" which very title shows the degree to which the personality of its bearer became identified with the public life of the nation. While a great deal of the space in this book, consequently, has had to be devoted to American Revolutionary History, it is hoped that excess in this direction has been avoided, and that the main purpose of the work will be attained, i. e. to give its young readers a distinct and vivid idea of the exalted character and priceless services of Washington, so far as these can be brought within the understanding of a child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Washington, Vol. 1 of 2 In one respect Washington has lost in definition. His name and renown are taken for granted, and his individuality has thus lost. He is mentioned, but his opinions are not studied, and the words of his writings have been forgotten. The tribute to his memory in tended in these volumes must be found in a close de pendence upon his letters and State papers. It is not as a soldier or as a President that I have sought to draw him nor do I wish to write a history of the times to show Washington's relations to his contemporaries. I have endeavored to make the man write his own biography, using his own phrases and words to illustrate his attitude towards public questions and public char acters. I cannot but feel that much more could have been included in this plan, but any modification of the scheme would have led me into too wide a field for the limits set to these volumes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writings of George Washington This is the first volume of the new series, Writings of American Statesmen, the purpose of which is to present in convenient form the most important writings of our most important statesmen. Subject to the limitations of space fixed by the publishers, the editor designs to bring into the several volumes all the writings of the statesmen represented which fall into the following categories: 1. Those documents which of themselves are important state papers, as Washington's Farewell Address, Hamilton's Report on the Public Credit, Franklin's Plan for a Union of the Colonies, and Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence. 2. Accounts of important events in which the writer was a leading participant, as Washington's description of his capture of Boston, Jefferson's account of the purchase of Louisiana, and Franklin's story of the conclusion of peace with Great Britain.3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Washington an Address It is not my purpose to detail to you the life of a man or to recite consecutively the history of a revolution. My task is rather to tell you in a plain way a few of the things which I deem best worth knowing about George Washington. The theme seems hackneyed enough, but much as it has been discussed, the last word has not yet by any means been said. Although Washington was born 171 years ago and has now been dead more than a century, we are but just beginning to know the real man. Like most great men he was not fully understood even by those contemporaries who apparently had the best opportunities for knowing him. Nor is this strange. Some fields of human activity develop men of simple and transparent lives-men to the very bottoms of whose souls all may see; but to achieve immortality, either in the field of politics or of war, argues a com plexity of mind and character not to be fathomed by every inquiring 'glance. Hence it is that the familiar friends of a dead statesman are sometimesfound disputing hotly above his grave as to what manner of man he really was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copies of the Wills of General George Washington: The First President of the United States and of Martha Washington, His Wife Fairfax County, in Virginia, was organized in 1742 and the records of this County contain some very interesting as well as instructive facts. It is not the purpose of the designer of this little book to dwell too much in detail, but otherwise with his knowledge of the records of the County to give the articles herein in as few words as possible, and he will endeavor to use the quaint expressions and spelling verbatim et literatim. This book will have few illustrations, as it is the designer's object to try and put it on the market with as little cost as possible, so that all may have an opportunity to possess this important little bit of history. It is also needless to dwell on the character and ability of that great Chieftain and our fellow "Man," who has been eulogized by some of the greatest men. The reader is requested to turn to page 56 and read "The Passing Away of Washington," written by Capt. W. H. Snowden, of Arcturus, Va. (who has, by the way, published some very interesting books on Virginia and Maryland, and I here refer all readers of history to his books which can be procured from him at little cost). Apart from the fact that Washington was our first President and Commander of our "Victorious Soldiers" in our sore trials; his will teaches us wisdom and kindness to our fellow-man; it also teaches us to love and honor our country and never to hesitate to say a word in its behalf. The social and political problems we are now face to face with were also worries of this great man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington, Shakespeare and St. George The Italian Colon (Columbus), was the first discoverer of land in the Western Hemisphere; but the first to visit any spot in what is now the United States, was Cabot, an Englishman hailing from the port of Bristol, though there is some doubt as to his having been born on British soil. That was the first link in a mighty chain of influences which Englishmen and their institutions have exerted on the history of the United States. It appears prominently in our laws, government processes, social usages, literary and scientific culture, and in our agricultural and commercial development. The past intellectual growth of America was in very large part from the seed of English thought, among the originators of which Shakespeare stands pre-eminent; and its material prosperity would be far less than it is to-day but for the market furnished by the British Isles for the cotton, grain, and animal products of this country. Considerations such as these should render interesting the material presented in the following pages as a small contribution to the wealth of knowledge that will be radiated in and from Chicago during the year of the great Columbian Fair, held to celebrate the lapse of four centuries since the discovery of the New World. In his youth the writer passed some time in the country immediately surrounding the early home of Shakespeare, was several times on the Avon below Stratford, and once had a narrow escape from drowning in its waters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writings of George Washington, Vol. 4 By the express which I sent to Philadelphia a few days ago, I wrote you a few hasty lines; I have little time to do more now, as I am hurried in despatching one brigade after another for New York, and preparing for my own departure by pointing out the duties of those that remain behind me. Nothing of importance has occurred in these parts, since my last, unless it be the resignations of Generals Ward and Fry, and the reassumption of the former, or retraction, on account as he says, of its being disagreeable to some of the officers. Who those officers are, I have not heard; I have not required. When the application to Congress and notice of it to me came to hand, I was upon the footing of duty, or conscience, the General being persuaded that his health would not allow him to take that share of duty that his office required. Since when is originality considered an indispensable attribute of authorship? Stolen Words is a deft and well-informed history of the sin every writer fears from every angle. Award-winning author Thomas Mallon begins in the seventeenth century and pushes forward toward scandals in publishing, academia, and Hollywood, exploring the motivations, consequences, and emotional reverberations of an intriguing and distressingly widespread practice. In this now-classic study, Mallon proves himself to be one of our most versatile, original, and delightful writers.

During those two weeks the President was a busy and a worried man. Con gress was to convene early in December, and he was working on his state of the Union speech. Then, too, his little son, Tad, was desperately ill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Washington Symphony There were two points in the management of her household upon which Mrs. Leigh-scott was the more particular from having been often annoyed and surprised at their non-observance by persons who ought to know better. One was the prompt response to the door-bell by man or maid-servant in proper attire. Another was that her servants were forbidden to say engaged at the door, Mrs. Leigh-scott hold ing that when the mistress of the house was out of that portion in which visitors were received, the word was strictly true.
