Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arias sung and loved by the greatest singers of the world are here in fresh, new versions. This edition: draws on original manuscripts and historical first editions, along with recent research of prominent musicologists, to meet a high standard of accuracy and authenticity; enhances your enjoyment of the arias with fascinating background information about their original appearance in cantatas and operas, and about their composers; corrects hundreds of errors -- even incorrect words, notes and composers' names -- which have accumulated as past publishers copied from each others' editions; removes Romantic era misinterpretations and 19th-century piano accompaniments, restoring the clear, bright sound of Baroque music. It will be easier than ever to learn the arias because the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet symbols removes doubts about correct pronunciation. It will be easier to sing the arias with meaning because the original Italian texts are translated into English in three ways: 1. a singable rhymed translation 2. a readable prose translation and 3. a literal translation of each single Italian word for those who are learning the language. - Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular and multimodal forms of cultural products are becoming increasingly visible within translation studies research. Interest in translation and music, however, has so far been relatively limited, mainly because translation of musical material has been considered somewhat outside the limits of translation studies, as traditionally conceived. Difficulties associated with issues such as the 'musicality' of lyrics, the fuzzy boundaries between translation, adaptation and rewriting, and the pervasiveness of covert or unacknowledged translations of musical elements in a variety of settings have generally limited the research in this area to overt and canonized translations such as those done for the opera. Yet the intersection of translation and music can be a fascinating field to explore, and one which can enrich our understanding of what translation is and how it relates to other forms of expression. This special issue is an attempt to open up the field of translation and music to a wider audience within translation studies, and to an extent, within musicology and cultural studies. The volume includes contributions from a wide range of musical genres and languages: from those that investigate translation and code-switching in North African rap and rai, and the intertextual and intersemiotic translations revolving around Mahler's lieder in Chinese, to the appropriation and after-life of Kurdish folk songs in Turkish, and the emergence of rock'n roll in Russian. Other papers examine the reception of Anglo-American stage musicals and musical films in Italy and Spain, the concept of 'singability' with examples from Scandinavian languages, and the French dubbing of musical episodes of TV series. The volume also offers an annotated bibliography on opera translation and a general bibliography on translation and music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of French politics, art, philosophy and literature have long known the tensions and fascinations of Louis XV's reign, the 1750s in particular. David Charlton's study comprehensively re-examines this period, from Rameau to Gluck and elucidates the long-term issues surrounding opera. Taking Rousseau's Le Devin du Village as one narrative centrepiece, Charlton investigates this opera's origins and influences in the 1740s and goes on to use past and present research to create a new structural model that explains the elements of reform in Gluck's tragédies for Paris. Charlton's book opens many new perspectives on the musical practices and politics of the period, including the Querelle des Bouffons. It gives the first detailed account of intermezzi and opere buffe performed by Eustachio Bambini's troupe at the Paris Opéra from August 1752 to February 1754 and discusses Rameau's comedies Platée and Les Paladins and their origins.
