Book excerpt: Follow the history of Woodland Park Zoo from its nineteenth-century beginnings as a park originally carved from the wilderness north of downtown Seattle to promote a nearby real estate development. As Seattle grew, its zoo engendered civic pride and the animals in its growing collection became local personalities. By the 1970s, the zoo emerged as an international pioneer in zoo design. Lavishly illustrated, Woodland provides a narrative of changing ideas about the relationship between humans and animals, and a fond look at the zoo's animals and the people who care for them.

Book excerpt: Woodland Park, at an altitude of nearly 8,500 feet, is located 18 miles west of Colorado Springs along the north slope of Pikes Peak in eastern Teller County. Much of the history of the West passed through this area on the old Ute Trail--now Highway 24--as hunters, trappers, cowboys, Native Americans, settlers, miners, railroaders, ranchers, and tourists discovered an abundance of natural beauty and varied business opportunities through the years. Today, Woodland Park is home to about 8,000 year-round residents, many of whom treasure not only the spectacular scenery but also the rich past of the town they call home. This evocative tour through that past shares vintage photographs collected by the Ute Pass Historical Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Woodland Park was a best-kept secret for the residence and vacation property owners. Her lake was and still is according to a recent conservation report pristine. As with most secrets, they are not kept for long, and the word got out. People have moved in or bought the propertysome very inexpensively that went back for taxes. These new people probably wonder why there are so many black property owners in Woodland Park. The majority of the newcomers are not aware that Woodland Park was once a black resort that was created during segregation. They never stop to read the historical marker in front of the old one-room schoolhouse that tells about Woodland Parks history. They are unaware that there were once hotels and rental cottages that couldnt keep up with the summer demand or that the now-deserted beach used to be packed with many black vacationers and locals. They dont know that there was once a grand clubhouse that dominated Mayo Point. Many of these new people swim in the shallow waters of that very point where the clubhouse boardwalk once led. They havent heard of the beautiful Hallie Q. Brown, a black elocutionist, who once gave a speech for Queen Victoria. Hallie owned a humble cottage near the public beach. The new people dont know that the famous boxer Joe Louis spent lots of time in Woodland Park because his wifes family owned a cottage across the street from the old Kelsonia Hotel. Or that W. E. B. Du Bois once stood on a dock in Woodland Park with its founder, Marian Auther. They would be interested to know that during Prohibition, Dutch Anderson would be killed in a shoot-out with the police in Muskegon. Only a few days earlier, he had been to what is now the Shangri-La in Woodland Park to pick up his bootleg whisky and beer. They only know that Woodland Park has one of the most beautiful lakes in the area and that it is a wonderful place to bring the family. They know they can count on the old-timers waving to them with a smile as they pass them by. But there is so much more for them to learn about this enchanted place and so much more about Woodland Park, its settlers, and the people in the surrounding communities.

Discovering Seattle’s Parks is based on Westerlind’s blog, but for this new guidebook she has revisited and further researched every single park she describes, and now includes even more detailed information and descriptions. Organized by neighborhood, such as Downtown, Queen Anne, or Northeast Seattle, the guide features full-color photos throughout and simple, illustrated maps for the largest parks with more complex trail systems. Each park’s listing includes: • Icons for key features—playgrounds, viewpoints, waterfront spots, hidden parks, and dog parks • Public transportation and parking directions • Details on the park’s history • Highlights such as public art, water features, cycling paths, and more • Color photographs that capture the park’s essence Discovering Seattle’s Parks will keep families, walkers, dog-lovers, and kids of all ages busy with year-round exploration and fun!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published by The Vermont Fish & Widlife Department, The Nature Conservancy, and Vermont Land Trust--a revised and updated 2nd edition This book is a must-have for anyone wanting to understand Vermont's forests, wetlands, mountaintops, and shores. Richly illustrated with beautiful line drawings and stunning color photographs, this accessible field guide will delight outdoor explorers and armchair naturalists alike. The book starts with an introduction to the natural community concept and the factors influencing our natural systems, from wind and water to soil and rocks. Then, the book offers a lucid and enjoyable journey into Vermont's geologic past, with stories of colliding continents, sea floor sediments, and mysterious whale bones. This follows with a journey through all of Vermont's nine distinct biophysical regions, from the cold and wild Northeastern Highlands to the warm and dry Taconic Mountains. The bulk of the book describes Vermont's natural communities--its northern hardwood forests, dry oak woodlands, alpine tundra, cedar swamps, bogs, and marshes--in comprehensive detail. Ecological settings, including geology, soils, climate, and natural disturbance processes, are described for each community, along with complete lists of characteristic plants and animals, as well as places to visit. Wetland, Woodland, Wildland is the definitive guide to Vermont's natural communities, and is packed with information unavailable elsewhere. It offers practical information for naturalists, teachers, students, landowners, land managers, foresters, conservation planners, and all those with a love of nature who want to learn more about their surroundings. The first edition of this book, published in 2000, has become a mainstay for naturalists and students throughout Vermont and surrounding states and provinces. This second edition is completely updated to incorporate new research and a growing knowledge about natural communities, as well as a deeper understanding of climate change and its implications for conservation into the future. This newly updated book will be a prized addition to your natural history library, but it won't remain on the shelf. You will want to take it with you every time you explore the outdoors. Each paragraph will bring new insights and will deepen your understanding and appreciation of wild nature around you. You will surely want to share this book with friends.
