Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short survey guide is an introduction to investigating landscapes, looking for shadow and ghost woodlands. These are often 'lost woods', which do not appear on maps as woodlands, or even have names can be indicators of former land-use over hundreds of years. The guide results from many years investigating wooded landscapes and has developed specifically from a project begun in 2009 by Professor Ian Rotherham and colleagues. In 2012, the project received funding from the Peak District National Park's Sustainable Development Fund to involve volunteers in investigating the local landscape in the eastern Peak District. A version of the survey guide was produced for local volunteers. This publication brings the work together and illustrates wider issues and applications using some of the information from the project to date. There is still much more to do and other areas to investigate. The authors hope that this publication will act as both a guide and catalyst for further work.

Book excerpt: Does malevolence exist beyond the grave? An extract from the diary of Eleanor Harmsworth, governess at Waldegrave Hall, dated Wednesday 11 October 1899: "At first, I was utterly transfixed, but as I summoned the courage to move, so the presence hurriedly glided past me and, similar to a heated knife slicing through a block of cold butter, went straight through the closed door of my bedchamber and disappeared. If ever an event were created to determine the mettle of an individual, then exposing a person to a chilling spectacle such as this would surely test the nerve of any mortal." Book excerpt: In Cuban Star, an interpretive account of Alejandro "Alex" Pompez's life in context, Adrian Burgos, Jr. follows Pompez's--and baseball's--path through the twentieth century's changing social and racial landscape. When the selection committee voted Alex Pompez into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, some cried foul. A Negro-league owner during baseball's glory days, Pompez was known as an early and steadfast advocate for Latino players, helping bring baseball into the modern age. So why was his induction so controversial? Like many in the era of segregated baseball, Pompez found that the game alone could never make all ends meet. To finance his beloved team, the New York Cubans, he delved headlong into a sin many baseball fans find unforgivable—gambling. He built one of the most infamous numbers rackets in Harlem, eventually arousing the ire of the famed prosecutor Thomas Dewey. But he also led his Cubans, with their star lineup of Latino players, to a Negro-league World Series championship in 1947. In this effervescent biography, the historian and sportswriter Adrian Burgos, Jr., brings to life the world of professional baseball during a time of enormous change. Following Pompez from his early days to the twilight of his career, Burgos offers a glimpse inside the clubhouse as both owners and players struggled with the new realities of the game. That today's rosters are filled with names like Rodriguez, Pujols, Rivera, and Ortiz is a testament to Pompez and his lasting influence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boulders laugh, trees talk, and practically each patch of ground has meaning, in Atala Toy’s experience. Faeries, angels, ghosts, orbs, and spirits of place are just some of the life forms with which she helps us attune-and shows us how to record their image! Readers will cherish her rare combination of esoteric wisdom and practical guidance. With substantive clarity, she explains time travel, portals, dowsing, negative and positive vortexes, balls of energy known as merkabahs, ley lines, and orbs-the plasma of some life form visible to human eyes or to cameras, many of which are nature spirits who enjoy being around happy energy and so are often seen at parties and spiritual gatherings. A professional interdimensional communicator, Atala is up to the minute in her understanding of the emerging field of spiritual sciences and the correlations between modern physics and ancient metaphysical traditions that perceive the oneness of all nature. We all communicate interdimensionally every day, she says. We just don’t know it, and so we lose out on the many ways to receive help from the other life forms who share our space. Drawing on her own and her clients’ experiences, she teaches through colorful stories and her own powerful photographs. Titles include “The Ghost Who Washed Dishes,” “The Haunted Hotel,” “The Guardian of the Spring,” “The Horse Who Knew More Than His Owners,” “The Jilted House,” “The Stranded Gnome,” “The Moss Faery,” “The Owl on Turtle Island,” and “The Balsam Who Loved the Birch.” She also includes lessons explaining the energetic principles of the situation; simple exercises for mastering the principle contained in the story; and tips for photographing other life forms using technology available to anyone, such as digital or even cell phone cameras. By entering the fascinating realm of this book, the reader will join the growing number of people aware of subtle energy and able to see through the veils between dimensions. Not only is this possibility personally enriching, it serves a broader purpose as well. Needless to say, the planet and everything on it is at a critical juncture. In damaging the earth, we have damaged the nature beings’ home as well. It is therefore strongly in their interest to assist us in transforming the earth into something better. This book shows us how to learn from and enjoy them in a most delightful way

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case-centred study of Phantom Hitch-Hikers & Phantom Jaywalkers in Folklore and Fact. Tales of Phantom Hitch-Hikers are found the world over. But is there anything more to them than the staple of contemporary folklore they appear to be? Cases like Blue Bell Hill suggest there is. Here, and in numerous other modern cases, witnesses report vivid and terrifying encounters with solid-looking figures that step into the paths of their vehicles. These events show an affinity with the legendary Phantom Hitch-Hiker, suggesting that far from being mere vestiges of a superstitious folk tradition, they may reflect a genuine but complex phenomenon that continues to manifest in modern times and settings, and challenges our very notions of reality. This book traces Blue Bell Hill's ghost from its roots in folklore to compelling fact, with nearly 50 witness accounts attesting to it as an important modern example of haunting on record, and arguably the foremost case of its kind in the world today.

Book excerpt: Shadow Woods: a search for lost landscapes is intended to view ecology and landscapes in a somewhat different way from that which we normally do; to effectively view the countryside through a different lens. Considering ancient woods and treed countryside, the intention is to raise awareness about our ecological and landscape origins and through this to open up new possibilities and exciting opportunities. It is suggested that we need to understand the past to inform the present, and from this knowledge we can influence the future The author also introduces a number of key issues and ideas that are new - shadow woods, ghost woods, lost woods, eco-cultural landscapes, cultural severance, grubby landscapes, ecological filtration, biodiversity time-capsules, futurescapes, and more. This edition, revised in march 2018, contains updated figures / diagrams.
