Book excerpt: This report presents eight case studies of successful urban wood waste recycling projects and businesses. These studies document the success of recovered products such as lumber and lumber products, mulch, boiler fuel, and alternative cover for landfills. Overall, wood waste accounts for about 17% of the total waste received at municipal solid waste landfills in the United States. In 1998, the amount of urban wood waste generated was more than 160 million tons, with 29.6 million tons available for recovery. Similarly, in 1998, new construction in the United States generated 8.7 million tons of wood waste, with 6.6 million tons available for recovery; demolition waste generated 26.4 million tons of wood waste, with 9 million tons available for recovery. The case studies were selected on the basis of the following criteria: an emphasis on partnerships among communities, businesses, governments, and non-governmental organizations; efficient use of funds; sustained creation of enterprise; and a high benefit/cost ratio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the collection of waste and waste streams as an integral aspect of sustainable waste management. The authors take economic models and behavioral studies into account to go beyond just descriptions of waste collections technologies and collection route design. Models and tools for sustainable waste collection are described in detail, and the authors provide a comprehensive, integrated methodology to design waste collection systems that reduce environmental impacts, are economically viable, and achieve buy-in and participation from target populations. Part I of the book provides fundamentals and context on waste hierarchy, including waste prevention, reduction and reuse, waste collection itself, and steps such as preparation for recycling, recycling, treatment, and landfilling. Background in environmental, social, and economic concerns surrounding waste collection is also provided here. Part II addresses tools for design, operation, and maintenance of waste collection systems. Part III focuses on how the tools presented in Part II can be used to support sustainability assessments and decisions that consider the entire life cycle of waste and the role of waste collection programs in waste prevention, reduction, reuse, recycling, treatment, and disposal. Part IV addresses the challenges of developing sustainable waste management systems and addresses the role of waste collection in sustainable waste management in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a day's work is finished, take a look around at your company. Do standard production processes and day-to-day operations leave you with loaded trash bins from the front office to the factory floor-and every place inbetween? Such "solid waste" does far more than squander resources and imperil the environment... it's undoubtedly eating up countless dollars of your profits. Corporations throughout the nation are learning to tame solid waste, by implementing improved management of materials. Preventing Waste at the Source demonstrates how more than 50 companies have effectively reduced solid waste throughout all departments-and achieved dramatic reductions in operating costs. Beginning with a strategic framework, readers can then zero in on wasteful practices affecting all aspects of a business. Paper reduction measures for administrative offices, for instance. Ways to minimize packing materials over in the shipping department, while still protecting the product. There's also steps where suppliers and customers can take part in waste minimization efforts. Case histories prove it can be done, to everyone's advantage. Researched and compiled by the Indiana Institute on Recycling, Preventing Waste at the Source offers practical, on-the-job assistance to environmental managers, plant managers, manufacturing and quality engineers. Put its techniques and real-life guidance to work. You'll save more than money: you'll help save the environment.

This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Biomass Waste Strategy provides evidence of the large amount of biomass waste (by-product) from small informal and large formal sawmilling facilities in Uganda; as well as actions to reduce the large volume of waste. Uganda has witnessed an increase in investment in plantation forestry since 2004. As the plantations mature and processing commences, the amount of waste will also increase. The report therefore provides expert advice and technical assistance to support sawmill managers and supervisors to acquire skills and knowledge in downstream processing and utilization to reduce wood waste. It focusses on the development of a waste management strategy appropriate for Uganda, with a specific focus on pine sawmilling. If waste could be minimised in the sawmilling context, more of the high value primary product would be produced. Modern sawmills are able to achieve in excess of 50 percent product output. However, Sawmilling in Uganda is characterised by many small, mobile, informal sawmills, which currently produce more sawn products than the formal sawmills. There is a large amount of waste produced each year, with both formal and informal sawmills operating at very low recovery rates. One needs to consider the extent of the industrial forests in Uganda in order to make predictions regarding the wood that is being processed or will be processed, as well as the waste that will be generated. Therefore, a biomass strategy is important.
