Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of how women in leadership positions reflect on and describe their experience of having once attended a girls' high school or women's college. In 2006, the revision of Title IX broadened the earlier prohibition of discrimination by gender in education-related programs and provided federal funds for single-sex classes or activities in schools. This gave new impetus to a resurgent interest in single-sex education. New opportunities now exist for establishing educationally effective single-sex schools and classrooms as we move into the 21 st century. While a wealth of ongoing research has examined the learning needs of girls and how they may differ from those of boys, few studies have specifically examined women's post-graduation perceptions of their single-gender educational experiences with respect to their personal, social, and professional development. For this study, twelve women participated in face-to-face, semi-structured interviews focused on experiences they perceived as having shaped them, personally and professionally. The data were analyzed using thematic and selective coding. The women described many advantages to an all-female learning environment and the positive effects this had on the development of their self-concept and career choices. Five major themes emerged: supportive community and lasting relationships; the influences of a values-based education (most of the schools were run by nuns, who were "strong women" role models); the quality of the academic environment (most of the schools were also private), as well as the benefit of learning without the potential distraction or intimidation of boys or men present; the difficulty of dealing with real or imagined "lesbian" issues; and the unexpectedly positive role of fathers in supporting their daughters' personal and career goals. Further research might explore whether positive aspects of the single-sex learning environment can be created anew--such as classes within coed schools, or schools within coed colleges--to provide women with supports that may enhance their personal, professional, as well as educational outcomes. Educational leaders may find in this study other areas for consideration as they attempt to craft the mission and structure of future single-sex educational environments for girls and young women. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the experiences of a group of fifth grade girls in a single-sex class to a group of girls in a coeducational class. The focus was on the social and emotional aspects of the two classrooms. The methodology consisted of focus groups conducted at two different schools with four girls each. Classroom observations were also conducted in an all-girls' fifth grade class and a coeducational fifth grade class. The findings indicated that the girls from the single-sex class seem to prefer this arrangement, though they do have mixed feelings and sometimes wish there were boys in their class, mostly for social reasons. The girls from the coeducational class suggested that they might enjoy a single-sex class. Although inconclusive, the findings of this study support the institution of single-sex withing a coeducational school and suggest that educators should continue to pay attention to gender differences in learning.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the implementation experiences of school leaders and teachers in a public, all-female, single-sex campus that experienced successful student outcomes. This research examined the participants' views of the factors that influence successful implementation of this model. Three research questions guided the study: (1) What are stakeholder perceptions of the factors that influenced the successful implementation of an all-female, single-sex, whole-school reform? (2) What are stakeholder perceptions of the successes experienced during the successful implementation of an all-female, single-sex, whole-school reform? (3) What are stakeholder perceptions of the challenges to the successful implementation of an all-female, single-sex, whole-school reform? This qualitative study used a grounded theory approach and a case study design to examine the implementation of whole-school, single-sex reform on a campus that experienced successful student outcomes, as evidenced by receiving the highest rating from the state accountability system in 2010-2011. Participants for this study were selected through purposive, theoretical sampling using a referral technique to generate the participant pool. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, an open-ended questionnaire, and a review of documents. To produce a substantive theory, data analysis followed the open, axial, and selective coding processes outlined by Strauss and Corbin (1990). The participant perceptions and major findings were analyzed to determine the relationships between causal conditions in order to develop theoretical explanations about the factors that influenced the implementation. The major factors influencing the implementation of the all-female, single-sex campus in this study were: (1) Community, (2) External factors, (3) District-level factors, and (4) School-level factors. The data and findings from this research were used to generate a substantive theory regarding the factors that influence successful implementation of this model so that leaders in public school districts may have a greater knowledge base with which to augment the decision-making process when considering the implementation of all-female, single-sex campuses as a whole-school reform model. Also, districts planning to implement this model may use the findings as a guide when considering the factors in their own districts that may influence implementation.
