Book excerpt: Women Who Illuminate is a collection of 30 illuminating stories to inspire your soul's journey. In this special edition cover, we dive deeper into the story from co-author Samantha Ruth. About Samantha Ruth What you think of me is none of my business. I have spent my life in a mental tug-of-war about this. I don't care what you think about my style. Or my personality. But I've always cared what my parents, mentors and teachers think. It took my world shattering for me to realize that I've been distracted by this outside noise my entire life. I had to make the conscious decision to tune it all out. To listen to my voice only. To pick up the pieces and find a way to put them together. And that's when things began to change. I realized that so many of us live life the way we think we're supposed to. The way others expect us to. Confining ourselves to their visions, rather than living our own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lynn Cohick provides an accurate and fulsome picture of the earliest Christian women by examining a wide variety of first-century Jewish and Greco-Roman documents that illuminate their lives. She organizes the book around three major spheres of life: family, religious community, and society in general. Cohick shows that although women during this period were active at all levels within their religious communities, their influence was not always identified by leadership titles nor did their gender always determine their level of participation. The book corrects our understanding of early Christian women by offering an authentic and descriptive historical picture of their lives. Includes black-and-white illustrations from the ancient world.

What's Up with White Women? is a practical guide for white women who are interested in becoming more effective in their cross-cultural, anti-racist practices. Blending real-life stories, theory, and anti-racism practices from decades of on-the-ground work, the authors invite white women to understand their gendered role in systemic racism and their unique opportunity for action. Both frank and compassionate, coverage includes: Stories of white women's experiences with sexism, racism, and white privilege How white women harm BIPOC and ourselves by colluding with systems of oppression Why and how white women often hijack race conversations A powerful six-stage identity development model for self-reflection and growth Guiding questions and practical actions for strengthening anti-racism practices Tools to cultivate genuine partnerships with BIPOC individuals and groups. White women are positioned in a power hierarchy between white men and BIPOC. It is time for white women to step up and undertake deep reflection on their role in systemic racism and take concrete actions that support equity and justice for all people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reforming Women, Lisa Shaver locates the emergence of a distinct women’s rhetoric and feminist consciousness in the American Female Moral Reform Society. Established in 1834, the society took aim at prostitution, brothels, and the lascivious behavior increasingly visible in America’s industrializing cities. In particular, female moral reformers contested the double standard that overlooked promiscuous behavior in men while harshly condemning women for the same offense. Their ardent rhetoric resonated with women across the country. With its widely-read periodical and auxiliary societies representing more than 50,000 women, the American Female Moral Reform Society became the first national reform movement organized, led, and comprised solely by women. Drawing on an in-depth examination of the group’s periodical, Reforming Women delineates essential rhetorical tactics including women’s strategic use of gender, the periodical press, anger, presence, auxiliary societies, and institutional rhetoric—tactics women’s reform efforts would use throughout the nineteenth century. Almost two centuries later, female moral reformers’ rhetoric resonates today as our society continues to struggle with different moral expectations for men and women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in public office are often assumed to "make a difference" for women, as women--in other words, to represent their female constituents better than do their male counterparts. But is sex really an accurate predictor of a legislator's political choices and actions? In this book, Beth Reingold compares the representational activities and attitudes of male and female members of the Arizona and California state legislatures to illuminate the broader implications of the election and integration of women into public office. In the process, she challenges many of the assumptions that underlie popular expectations of women and men in politics. Using in-depth interviews, survey responses, and legislative records, Reingold actually uncovers more similarities between female and male politicians than differences. Moreover, the stories she presents strongly suggest that rather than assuming that who our representatives are determines what they will do in office, we must acknowledge the possibility that the influence of gender on legislative behavior can be weakened, distorted, or accentuated by powerful forces within the social and political contexts of elective office.
