Protect a bacterium from predators, and provide it with adequate food and space to grow, and it would continue living--and reproducing asexually--forever. But a paramecium (a slightly more advanced single-cell organism), under the same ideal conditions, would stop dividing after about 200 generations--and die. Death, for paramecia and their offspring, is inevitable. Unless they have sex ... In Sex and the Origins of Death, William Clark ranges far and wide over fascinating terrain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this updated edition of a pathbreaking classic, Alice Kessler-Harris explores the meanings of women's wages in the United States in the twentieth and twenty first centuries, focusing on three issues that capture the transformation of women's roles: the battle over minimum wage for women, which exposes the relationship between family ideology and workplace demands; the argument concerning equal pay for equal work, which challenges gendered patterns of self-esteem and social organization; and the debate over comparable worth, which seeks to incorporate traditionally female values into new work and family trajectories. Together, these topics and social organization; and the debate over comparable worth, which seeks to incorporate traditionally female values into new work and family trajectories. Together, these topics illuminate the many ways in which gendered social roles have been produced, transmitted, and challenged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the first generations of wage-earning women, precedents were established that still operate in today's workforce. An understanding of the early decades of this century is thus essential for women's studies, labor history, and sociology. Writing with a keen eye for detail as well as a real empathy with these women, Leslie Tentler reconstructs the day-to-day realities of life on the job, in the home and in the industrial neighborhoods of major cities. In doing so, she explores the myth that jobs outside the home for this generation led to women's emancipation.

Book excerpt: The one great question that today agitates the whole civilized world is an economic question. It is not the production but the distribution of wealth; in other words, the wages question,-the wages of men and women. Nowhere do we find any suggestion that capital and the landlord do not receive a quid pro quo. Instead, the whole labor world cries out that the capitalist and the landlord are enslaving the rest of the world, and absorbing the lion's share of the joint production. So long as it is a question of production only, there is perfect harmony. Both unite in agreeing that to produce as much as possible is for the interest of each. The conflict begins with distribution. It is no longer a war of one nation with another; it is internecine war, destroying the foundations of our own defences, and making enemies of those who should be brothers. It is impossible for even the most dispassionate or indifferent observer to blink these facts. Proclaim as we may that there is no antagonism between capital and labor,-that their interests are one, and that conditions and opportunities for the worker are always better and better,-practical thinkers and workers deny this conclusion. Wealth has enormously increased, in a far greater ratio than population. Does the laborer receive his due proportion of this increase? One must unhesitatingly answer no. In a country whose life began in the search for freedom, and which professes to give equal opportunity to all, more startling inequality exists than in any other in the civilized world.

Book excerpt: #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A landmark manifesto" (The New York Times) that's a revelatory, inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth that will empower women around the world to achieve their full potential. In her famed TED talk, Sheryl Sandberg described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which has been viewed more than eleven million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. Lean In continues that conversation, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Sandberg, COO of Meta (previously called Facebook) from 2008-2022, provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career. She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment, and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women both in the workplace and at home.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wage-Earning Women The study of a wide field in industry cannot be ao complished by one person within a reasonable period, owing to obstacles of time and space. Therefore, the only practicable means of making such a study is to employ assistance. In the investigation which forms the subject of the following Chapters I was authorized to engage such help as I needed, and it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge here my indebtedness to the forty assistants who made this story of wage-earning women possible. Their work, as well as mine, appears in the following pages. Theirs was the task of collect ing material and furnishing reports on their respective fields, mine the task of planning and directing and editing.
