Book excerpt: This research answers three questions: What is peacemaking in contemporary times; what role do women play in this peacemaking; how can the occurrence of peacemaking be fully recognized and sustained in today's society? An extensive literature review of women peacemakers expands the concept of peacemaking to include daily personal behavior as well as international work. Narrative interviews are conducted with 7 women, nominated by their peers as little known peacemakers, from Ireland, Israel, South Africa, Brazil, East Timor, and the United States. Pat Patfoort's theory of nonviolence is used as a means of identifying peacemaking behavior. The women describe their extraordinary peacemaking in diverse fields, provide insight into what it takes to be a peacemaker, and discuss their concepts of forgiveness as an element of peacemaking. Through 6 reflective hermeneutic visits with the transcripts, the researcher offers 4 findings. First, the work of these women is often with the most oppressed populations where peacemaking takes the forms of education and relationship building. Second, by identifying this type of peacemaking as 'yin," the researcher shows that it is complementary and foundational to the better-known "yang" peacemaking such as mediation, conciliation and negotiation. Third, the researcher formulates a simple process for noticing and honoring the hidden peacemaking, such as that of the women in the study, that is ongoing in today's world. Finally, the researcher posits that the key to increasing the occurrence of peacemaking in today's society is to recognize the potential peacemaker within each of us, and then mindfully begin doing the work.--Abstract.
