Book excerpt: The twenty-seven women featured in the book are names from the past and those currently engaged in making our community stronger and more responsive to those in need. It was my intention to memorialize those whose lives were dedicated in helping others including those who fought and struggled to win the right for women to vote. I have come to the realization, after visiting with these women and doing the necessary research and observing the lives of others I knew, that women are the prime movers of change in our society. It is my hope you will become acquainted with these women as I have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the eighteenth century in Britain, readers, writers, and theater-goers were fascinated by women who dressed in men’s clothing—from actresses on stage who showed their shapely legs to advantage in men’s breeches to stories of valiant female soldiers and ruthless female pirates. Spanning genres from plays, novels, and poetry to pamphlets and broadsides, the cross-dressing woman came to signal more than female independence or unconventional behaviors; she also came to signal an investment in female same-sex intimacies and sapphic desires. Sapphic Crossings reveals how various British texts from the period associate female cross-dressing with the exciting possibility of intimate, embodied same-sex relationships. Ula Lukszo Klein reconsiders the role of lesbian desires and their structuring through cross-gender embodiments as crucial not only to the history of sexuality but to the rise of modern concepts of gender, sexuality, and desire. She prompts readers to rethink the roots of lesbianism and transgender identities today and introduces new ways of thinking about embodied sexuality in the past.

Book excerpt: If you're a woman who feels like you don't have time to study the Bible in a deep and meaningful way, this is the book for you. Romans is a combination of Chris's ability to unpack scripture in deep, practical ways and Hope's ability to create questions that guide the reader and apply God's word. Designed to be completed in just twenty minutes, each study is both substantive and time efficient and is useful for individual and group studies. -- What Others are Saying: "This Bible study is a helpful and fruitful guide to the book of Romans. I was impressed with both the depth and insight of this study as well as its accessibility and readability. This study demonstrates careful and sound exegesis of Romans along with practical insight and application of Paul's teaching. The questions throughout help the reader to connect with and apply the scripture both to their heart and personal story. This book will ignite both the mind and heart to continue to grow in their love for the Lord and his word. I heartily endorse this wonderful resource for those who desire to study Romans in a deep, meaningful, and practical way." -Mark Pfütze, Ph.D., M.Div., LPC, assistant professor of practical theology and counseling, Covenant Theological Seminary "I felt God's heart for women jumping off the page. The questions brought out a rich balance of biblical history and emotional responses to God's Spirit at work. It was a joy to delve deeply into the word of God in a framework compatible to the life and responsibilities of a woman." -Heidi Faulkner, missionary for Campus Crusade for Christ "I appreciate the combination of historical context, current application, emotional honesty, and connection to personal story. I love the use of the words like 'hurt' and 'scared' in the reflection questions as it draws out the truth and messiness of our emotional experience in our relationship with God. These studies have depth of richness and authenticity while being brief and attainable for women who have full lives and yet are committed to study the Bible." -Stephenie Craig, LCSW, pastor's wife and therapist "This study does exactly what a Bible study should-it calls the student to read and think on their own, then walks through the text with clarity and precision. Tackling Romans is a big, important task, and from what I've seen, readers will leave this study with a solid, first-hand knowledge of the text-the measuring stick we should use when evaluating any new study." -Kristi James, Acquisitions Editor for P&R Books Christine B. Gordon, MATS, is wife to Michael, who is an ordained PCA pastor, and mother of three. She earned her master of arts in theological studies at Covenant Seminary. When she has time she loves to sleep, walk, and sew, in that order. Hope A. Blanton, MSW, is wife to Ray and mother of three. She earned her master's in clinical social work at Temple University. Currently she works as the women's ministry equipper at Redeemer PCA of Lincoln, Nebraska. She loves good food, making people laugh, and being outside.

Book excerpt: When Dr. Elizabeth Cowrie shows up in Salem, Massachusetts, to study the witch trials, Hazel and her best friend, Roxy, are both instantly attracted to the workaholic professor. Roxy snags a date with Elizabeth first, but when their chemistry fizzles out, Hazel sees an opportunity to pursue Elizabeth herself—until she realizes Elizabeth is avowedly anti-magic. That’s definitely a problem since Hazel is a bona fide witch: rides a broom, has a black cat, brews love potions, lives in a haunted house, and has a vampire ex-girlfriend. Roxy is the only person who knows the truth, and Hazel has gotten used to hiding who she is, but she can’t live a lie with the person she loves most. Can Hazel give up magic to make it work with Elizabeth? Or will she give up on the love of her life instead?

Book excerpt: In the early days of the city of Appleton, Wisconsin, twelve educated, civic-minded women established an organization to promote social and literary fellowship. In addition to the contributions of their organization to the establishment of Appleton society, the achievements of these individual women figure large in the history of Appleton and its civic, cultural, religious, and educational institutions. Their stories-often overlooked and previously untold-are examined in historical context.

This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There was too much to be done by the most of us, to keep the wolf from the door, to give way to our feelings, and it was better so. It gave us the feeling that we, too, although not enlisted in the ranks South, had a battle to fight at home on more than one line, and the worst of all was to keep up hope against hope, that our loved ones would be spared to come back to us...” As the fiftieth anniversary of the American Civil War neared, the Wisconsin History Commission was established to develop and publish a series of “original papers” on Wisconsin’s role in what was officially called the War of Rebellion. Picked as the sixth selection and published in May 1911 was Wisconsin Women in the War between the States by Ethel Alice Hurn. In many ways it was a landmark effort. It was one of the first formal recognitions—not only in Wisconsin but nationally—of the overlooked and almost forgotten role Northern women played in 1861–1865. The author of the study was Ethel Hurn of Oshkosh, then a student at the University of Wisconsin. Gathering the material for the book proved a daunting task. During the Civil War era women could not vote, hold bank accounts, or take a direct role in business. Nevertheless, in the time of national crisis, women took over farms and shops and other endeavors, and some left quiet family hearths to move onto the public stage. They prepared food, sewed and laundered, knitted socks and gloves, and organized campaigns and fairs as relief efforts that raised millions of dollars to aid wounded soldiers and assist war widows and orphans. However, these women’s work was generally undertaken without thought of keeping a formal record. It could be found only in scattered collections of letters, newspaper files, several interviews, and the brief reports and pamphlets of soldier fairs and soldiers’ aid societies. Wisconsin Women in the War between the States is just as significant today as it was a century ago because it documented an important turning point in the changing role of women in American society. Other scholars have added to the record in the passing years, but Hurn’s groundbreaking book is welcomed back in print during this 150th anniversary of the American Civil War to be discovered and enjoyed as well as to enlighten a new generation of readers.
